The sudden charge did its job, and more than startled Veru from where he stood. But unlike most logical creatures, Veru had never exactly developed a flight reflex. Sure, he had a feeling he was about to get wailed on. He kept moving. But it didn't occur to him to dodge backwards to escape Azar's warpath. Instead, he held where he stood as though to absorb the force of it.
It only occurred to him a second before he was about to be outsted that this plan probably wasn't the most prudent. In a quick panic over what to do to avoid too crushing a blow, Veru rose up onto his back feet and swung at the red lion once more. His first paw swung past- but the second collided sharply with Azar's shoulder, and pushing himself and the red male apart.
Was that two hits? Maybe things were starting to turn his way after all! The ruby eyed lion gave a little victory smirk, and took a few steps backwards. "I don't know, I'm not regretting it just yet! Take your time though, I'm sure you'll catch me up."
Hraga groaned. "Azaaaar," he lamented. "What did I tell you, you gotta hit him really fast! He can't take a hit! Just punch him in the face! With your paw! Like bam!"

Move 2/5: Miss
And again with the hitting?! What was going on? When had this fight suddenly taken a sharp downward turn into Veru's favour? The paw against his shoulder was enough to knock him off balance and he staggered rather ungracefully across the sand - almost losing his footing completely. Only with the shifting of his far-paw, did he maintain his ground, swinging to face his adversary with renewed fury.
How dare he. Hitting him. Taunting him. This rogue was stooping to new lower levels as far as Azar was concerned and he was not going to let this lie.
With a roar - because he was beyond speech now - he lunged again, not caring much for precision or a clean swipe. He was going to tackle the skinny lion to the ground and crush him. Then they'd see who had the last laugh!

Oh dear. Veru might not have had the best flight reflexes, but the sight of Azar roaring bloody rampage upon him was enough to strike some terror. Blows suddenly began to rain down all around his lean form, and it took several rather acrobatic manuevers to keep himself shy of Azar's claws. It would help if he could have at least removed the smile from his face. He smiled when...well, pretty much all the time actually!
"I seem to have made you mad, I think!" He half laughed, trying his best to deflect the blows as they came. Out of pure reflex, he slashed his own arm outwards and tried to catch Azar in the snout once more, hoping to drive him back. Instead the blow was neatly missed. It seemed even in the big guard's rage, he was still a thoughtful fighter.
While Veru was trying his best not get maimed, Hraga was all but delighted to see his mentor finally unleashing some good vengeance upon the talkative rogue. "Yeah! Yeah!" the black cub cheered. "You gotta just hit him! Don't let him keep dodging like that! Look, he always moves to the left!"
Veru stumbled to the side. Wait, he always moved to the wha---!

Move 3/5: Hit
A little miffed that the skinny lion with his quick legs had managed to evade his rather good tackle-effort, Azar would likely have ploughed on if it had not been for Veru's attempt at striking another hit.
Lurching to the side, sand flying, he paused only to catch his breath before pressing on with the attack. Then he was--oh, wait. What? Left?
Acting without thinking (because really, if he was thinking about it, there was no way he;d have listened to a kid's advice on duelling), Azar shifted his weight and lunged to the left; as directed. It was likely he was just as surprised as Veru when the fighting tip actually paid off and he finally managed to land a hit.
Maybe the kid did have talent, after all.

That one hurt. Getting slammed by Azar all but threw Veru to the side, staggering into the hot sand and gaping for the air that had been knocked out of him. Still, even as he took in painful breaths he couldn't help but laugh at his predicament. Damn kid. Why couldn't he have been on his side?! Surely he was far more likeable! Owch.
But Azar was still up above him, and it was no time to go back crying to Ea. [Who probably would have given him a second beatdown for the day!] The white lion struggled to get himself back on his feet before Azar retaliated, or that kid gave any more battle altering information! "Hey, now, that's not any fair little man!" He wheezed. "Giving away my secrets..." Did he really keep moving to the left? Crapcrap. Who had trained him defectively?! Oh. Well, he supposed he'd trained himself.
Luckily, he was back on his feet before Azar could mount finish the job. He shook off the sand and caught his first full breath, knowing full well he was going to be awfully sore later. He coughed. "Well, I suppose I had that one coming..."
The black cub all but ignored Veru, and instead decided from that instant that he was clearly destined for greatness. "Haha!" he wailed. "That was really good, like when you hit him all like that! See, cause I noticed these things when everyone was all kapaa and going all-"
Hraga continued to chatter away as the opponents moved for their next volley.

Move: 4/5: Miss
"Don't blame the kid if you're being predictable." Azar finally snapped, seeming to come out of his rage now that he'd landed a hit that had sent the white lion reeling. Just sad that he kept getting back up. Couldn't he just lay there and announce Azar the winner so he could grin smugly at his wonderful victory?
At least Hraga seemed to appreciate his skill (even if it had been - in part - thanks to the kid's own observations that he'd struck true).
"It's not over yet, weakling." Azar reminded with a growl, lunging again. However, rage aside, his overconfidence made him sloppy and his swing would meet nothing but thin air.
Another miss for the guard.

"I might be predictable, friend, but at least I didn't need ringside assistance!" Veru tested his luck, deciding the best offense was to stay the hell away from Azar's immediate reach. Unfortunately, now he was paying too much attention to what he was doing. His fleet-footed steps grew less fleet and more awkward. Did he always move in that direction to... yep, there he was going that direction again. Veru corrected himself and went right. But it felt awkward and vulnerable.
Suddenly, the guard lunged forward. Veru staggered for a second before jumping aside, skidding into the sand as he did. He did a good show of rolling to his feet, even if it had been somewhat undignified. "Weakling? I don't know, I thought the kid seemed pretty solid," Veru deflected casually. "Should I have a pet name for you? I'm very new at this whole manly...dramatic conflict! What's a good insult? You are very red."
Hraga frowned. "That's not a good insult. You can't be a good dueler without good insults! You gotta be all like, 'you are so ugly and your face is ugly' and that's what I tell Tarsa all 'the time."

Move 5/5: Miss
"Now, now, I did ask if it was okay for the kid to stay, remember? He's learning and you're bumbling today has taught him exactly what not to do. So, really, you have done your part for the Firekin...in a way." He laughed, though the sound faded at the rest of the white lion's words.
Pet name?
"You aren't allowed to taunt me. I'm a guard and superior to you in every way." He growled and with a curling smirk, set his hind paws deep in the sand. "I'll show you why." He kicked off from the ground and aimed another swipe at Veru, hoping to catch him by surprise. But boy, was this lion tricksy!
"Just. Stand. Still!" He growled.

"Oh, yes. Of course, a guard." Veru lamented, taking a few quick sidesteps to the [ugh] left. "Truly at the top of the food chain, I hear. I won't tell anyone about the hits I was able to get in, don't worry. Next thing you know they'll be calling you something and we can't have that."
Azar's paw cut close to his face, and Veru did his best to try and mount a counter offense. He jumped forward into the guard barrage, trying to trip him up. Unfortunately the lion was simply too big for a wiry lion like Veru to stagger without personal injury. Which was too bad, because it would have been the perfect opportunity for a comeback! What was it the cub had said? Ra-ta-cha? Yeah, it would of been something like that.
Instead, Veru jumped away before getting himself in a bad spot. He did a quick loop and scaled one of the sandstones, reading to pounce off the second Azar gave chase. His tail flicked, and only just then did he start to really feel the ache in his side from the second blow the guard had dealt. "I seem to be too fast for you, friend!"
Hraga sighed, pressing his paws to the side of his face. Hmm. If only Azar coulda hit that rogue right underneath the snout. Judging by the way Veru would rather avoid blows than take them, Hraga guessed he probably would go down. But as it was, it was already getting into the afternoon, and weren't they due to meet Heti for the patrol change? "Hey uh, Azar- I think we gotta go meet Heti, don't we?"

Azar polled himself up short and narrowed his red-eyed gaze at the white lion. If only his last strike had hit true and smacked that smart-mouthed weakling in the face. Perhaps that would have shut him up. Breathing somewhat heavily now (duelling wasn't an every day occurrence for him and it really was rather hot) he set his tail into thrashing behind him. Once he'd caught his breath, he opened his mouth to shoot some obscenity no doubt--except that Hraga, thankfully intervened with his own observation.
Ah yes, Heti. Azar had forgotten about him.
"You're lucky I'm too busy to continue this duel or else I would have crushed you where you stand!" He drew in a deep breath and puffed out his chest. "But hey, I'm a nice guy. We'll call this a tie - despite the fact I was clearly the better fighter - and continue at another time, hm?" He was looking forward to teaching this rogue--wait, Firekin--a lesson in respect. With that in mind, his eyes snapped back to Hraga and he gave a grunt of agreement, his whiskers flinching.
"Fine, fine. Let's go kid. Don't want to be late." And, with another gaze in Veru's direction, he turned and sauntered off - though his gait was hindered with a slight limp.
