"What trick? You attacked me and I didn't move. That's not a trick."

"Next time, you can sit still like a dummy while I run into you." Probably that would be a horrible, horrible idea, but now he couldn't take it back. There was something wrong with a pride where a lion's word was iron, even when he wasn't speaking seriously. Surely there had to be.

Solv coughed dramatically as he climbed to his feet. He was pleased that Gunnar had not insulted him by offering to help because if the offer had been made Solv would have had to refuse it and he would not have wanted to. That had hurt. Solv hadn't been struck by any part of a lion larger than a paw in some time and he had forgotten how solid the rest of a reaver was, too.

"I am slain," he moaned. "Cut off in my prime. I demand a ballad."

Now he was joking, and he would have laughed to prove it but he was still a bit winded. Probably his ribs weren't really broken. They just hurt. Why was it that even the reavers who claimed to like him enjoyed beating up on him? Was there something in the scent of his coat that made him irresistible in that way?

Gunnar roared with laughter while the bard stood. The mental image of Solv ploughing into him to try and knock him down while Gunnar sat still was ... well, amusing. The bard was quick, but he didn't have the strength of another reaver. Gunnar felt quite confident that he would be able to withstand such an attack (although that might just be his natural reaver ego talking).

The blond lion had gone easy on Solv, but he was used to sparring with his fellow reavers. No reaver worth his salt would whine about his injuries or expect Gunnar to act solicitous about a few bruises. Gunnar reached out a paw to give Solv a companionable thump on the shoulder. "Good thing you're a bard, then. You can write your own."

The fight hadn't been much of a challenge to Gunnar, but Solv still seemed winded. The bard was probably dying for some herbs. "Want to go find some mint?" Gunnar asked, grinning at the bard. "It'll help inspire you to compose your ballad."

"I can't write my own ballad if I'm dead," Solv pointed out, still whining a little although he was trying very hard not to. He wasn't so stupid as to think that Gunnar had been making much of an effort to damage him, but that didn't mean he didn't feel damaged anyway. And he wasn't much of a stoic when it came right down to it.

"Mint would be just the thing for this," he said. "It will be inspirational and take my mind off of this crippling pain you've inflicted on me."

Now he was very obviously exaggerating for comedic effect, at least in his opinion, but he had to sneak a look at Gunnar from the corner of his eyes just to make sure that the reaver realized that. It was difficult to tell with reavers how much they picked up on when it came to sarcasm.

Gunnar thought the bard was probably just trying to be funny with his complaints, but his words did sound suspiciously whiny. A bit flowery, to tell the truth. He didn't pick up well on the sarcasm. The bard always seemed to be using his words as weapons, his tone and inflection shifting so that it was difficult for the reaver to follow his exact meaning at the best of times.

Gunnar optimistically decided that Solvtorn was just trying to flatter him by praising his strength and prowess in battle. Well. He never minded a compliment.

"Sounds good. You write the ballad, and I'll try to stay sober enough to listen to it," Gunnar said cheerfully. It would be an amusing change from the friends he usually chewed mint with. They usually just rambled about their heroic deeds and feminine conquests. As they headed off to find some mint, Gunnar reflected that Solvtorn was turning out to be a fine new friend indeed.
