Despite the female Firekin shifting her stomach away from him, Ovu still managed to tackle her to the ground, before clambering on top of her in order to pin her down. The blood red male tutted indignantly, as if he was disappointed that he had missed her stomach entirely. Still, it was quite impressive that she had this much fight in her, even in her current condition. He ended up having to move so that his back legs were dug into the sand, with his front legs still holding her down. He dug his claws deep into her back as he sneered at her, occasionally retracting his claws, but only so he could flick them back out again and hopefully cause even more agony.
"Do it! Hurry up and kill her!"
Zizima was close enough to hear Ovu's command, which only caused him to run faster. Without any prior warning to his fellow Nergui, he barrelled straight into Mir, headbutting her right in the side in order to knock her away from her victim. He then whipped around and tackled Ovu, using his own body weight as leverage to throw the equally large male to the ground.
He knew that neither of his travelling companions would be injured, so he quickly got to his feet and stood over the fallen figure, who turned out to be female. It was only when he took a proper look at her that he spotted her current condition, causing a look of sheer horror to appear on his face.
"Oh please no." A desperate tone touched Zizima's voice. She was pregnant, and Mir and Ovu had attacked her without mercy. His eyes darted from Mir to Ovu, who he was sure were going to attack again, despite him obviously standing against them. "How could you do this?! What good could possibly come from this?!"
Despite having known that Zizima was heading directly for them, Ovu had simply been too caught up in the moment. When the Grey Warrior attacked Mir, he didn't even have time to react before he came for him. Before he knew it, he was lay on the sand. The red male blinked in shock. The force of the attack hadn't hurt too much, but it wasn't often that Ovu got a taste of his own medicine.
Getting to his feet, Ovu snarled at Zizima, baring his teeth in protest. "She's the enemy! We need to do to her what her kind did to us!" He took a step closer, his tail whipping violently from side to side. "You said you would help us get our revenge! How could you betray us like this?!"
Zizima roared at Ovu and hunched down, ready for a fight. "Attacking a helpless, pregnant female is not my idea of helping!" His gaze then moved to Mir. "Both of you are twisted if you think that attacking this female is going to benefit you in any way." He then allowed himself to look breifly down at the female, who's condition seemed to be getting worse by the moment. A look of deep sadness and regret touched his face, but he remained silent, and once again fixed his attentions back on the two lunatics.

As Mir was lowering her right arm she felt an intense weight hit her right side. It surged the air from her lungs and she choked, spurting forward, her body hitting the sand heavily with a thud. Her head was reeling. She felt dizzy, faint, angered, suspended in slow motion. She could not make out the words the gray one spoke, only seeing the female was still alive, Ovu thrown far from her, the gray one protecting the lone figure, the lone firekin, it hurt Mir's heart, her eye pained.
She roared in frustration, pain and anger, hurt from betrayal.
"You fool! You betray your own kind! For what? A female whose future brings more at our door? You betray me, this mission, everything!" Mir snarled, she pushed herself to stand, coughed, she tasted her own blood in her mouth, she tongued a gash on the inside of her lip where her fangs must have protruded into them.
"You are a coward."
"He, is... clear minded, not fouled by the disillusioned thoughts brought on by you two, your kind" Karana'Mzaana said trying to catch her breath. She felt tired, and as she shifted, she felt a warmth on her side. Blood, coming from the marks the dark male had put in her. It was hard to take a deep breath.
"He is not low, as you two are, you are foul beings," she looked up to the gray male, whose strength, even his stature, was like that of firekin. A dark spec in the sky beyond the gray male caught her eye.
An avian.
Kessek.
Was it possible?
Mzaa smiled.
"Silence!" Mir snarled.
"No," Mzaa said making eye contact, not faltering, you have failed, and will fail. She coughed, taking a breath, feeling a pain in her abdomen, the children, they were upset, and wished to be in the world. She was so tired, she had to be strong for them.
"You have failed, and will fail, others are coming, they will see you know," she said motioning to the bird in the sky. "They will know your face," she spat at Mir.
Mir snarled and went to step forward, but hesitated, her ribs hurt incredibly, probably fractured. She turned to Ovu, "let us return to Oma, he will be most displeased with this bafoon," she looked to Mzaa, snarled and smirked a toothy grin, "this is not over," and Mir turned to run from the way she came, making sure Ovu was in tow.
No Mzaa thought, looking to the sun this was not over, not yet.
"You should flee, before any see you, I will tell them, it was not you," Mzaa said, laying her head on her paws, closing her eyes in the pain from the cubs, their want upon the world, "you should go, go now," as she looked to him, her eyes said to run, but they also said thank you, in silence.
Meanwhile, above in the skies...
Kessek flew overhead above Mwako'Nakama. Kessek looked down as her master, her friend, ran as fast as her legs could carry her. Mwako'Nakama had hesitated that morning, to come home, what would others think? Would they know who she was? Would she be turned away? Would the male, Spaki, be there to tell toehrs indeed they had met and he had given her words stating of the war, that she would come?
So many things.
But she ran.
"Kessek, fly ahead!"
Kessek screeched and flew faster, but as Kessek got closer she saw something in the distance, a small group, perhaps, and then breaking away. As she was closer than Nakama, she also smelled something: blood.
No.
Not after all this time.
They needed to hurry!

Ovu sneered darkly at Zizima. Although he had seemed incredibly angry over what had happened, inside, he couldn't be more pleased. The 'Grey Warror' had proven himself to be nothing more than a sentimental coward. Muunokhoi would be pleased too.
Mir clearly wasn't though, and Ovu had to carry on pretending that he was just as angry as she was. "You'll be sorry, mark my words." He glared, although Zizima appeared to be paying him and Mir little mind. He was more concerned with the Firekin, and what she had to say.
Ovu managed a small sinister chuckle. "You know nothing." The Firekin knew she wasn't going to make it, so at this point, she was just spitting hot hair. When Mir called for them to leave, he nodded firmly and took off. The sooner they returned to the Nergui, the better. He had much to tell. Thanks to him, everyone would know of the Grey Warrior's failure.
"I am NOT your kind." Zizima spat in disgust as Mir raged over what he had done. What else could he have done though? If the Nergui didn't like it, it was tough. That was something he would have to deal with upon his return. For now, he had something much more important to come to terms with.
When the fallen female spoke up, Zizima lowered his head. He had just told Mir and Ovu that he wasn't one of their kind, yet hearing it from the innocent victim that lay at his feet still made him feel guilty. She didn't deserve this, and he certainly didn't deserve her sympathy or understanding. He had let down yet another female. She may have been a complete stranger, but it still hurt. What he had allowed to happen today would still haunt him.
Ignoring both Mir and Ovu as they spat more venom before taking their leave, Zizima focused on the female. She was badly injured, and her stomach was so swollen, her cubs had to be on the way. How could he have let this happen? Although she told him to leave, he really didn't want to. She had threatened Mir and Ovu that others were coming though, and despite him having not been the one who did this, it wouldn't have looked good regardless.
Zizima lifted his head in order to look around. He couldn't see any one else around, but he did spot the avian hovering in the sky. An ally of hers? He lowered his head once more in order to look her in the eyes, a look of sadness returning once again to his face. "I'm so sorry." With that, he turned and started running.
His legs felt so heavy, as if they were fighting against him leaving. He only stopped when he reached the top of the high dune from which they had all first spotted the female. He looked back, watching for signs that she was going to be OK, but sadly he just couldn't make out any movement from that distance. Then, without giving it a second thought, he let out a mighty roar. With any luck, whoever was nearby would hear it and come and investigate. Hopefully, they wouldn't be too late.

Kessek hovered above where the old lioness curled up, watching the male go far fro her, raise a roar that was not one of threat, but perhaps one of calling, for help, and remorse. Duty, honor, strength, the old one must have shown it all, Kessek thought as she flew in circles frantically over Mzaa, not as a vulture would, but one wishing to bring alarm.
As Mwako'Nakama breathed deeply, controlling her breath, she listened, heard what sounded like thunder, but more than that, and her heart raced, a sinking feeling in her stomach. She had to hurry, she had to be in time. She'd come so far.
Karana'Mzaana watched as the gray male left, raised his voice, and she went to as well, but a pain rushed through her, and her young children wished to be upon the world.
Soon, she was exhausted, phyiscally, emotionally, and beside her curled small bundles of wriggling life. Her children, the future legacy of the firekin, and she looked to them with a softened expression, curled around them (with the side that had not been wounded, as she did not want the young exposed to such things so young), and lay her head by them. So small, so variant in color and personality already, she could tell. Yet, among them, she saw a bright color, one that reminded her very much of their father, but also, of a sister, Naar, but the markings like her own, but also unlike them.
She smiled, feeling a pain in her heart.
Mzaa thought back to her first thoughts while waiting for Mwako'Nakama.
She did not want to live to see any of her children fall...but, she might not get the chance.
The reality was cold, and she felt it deep. She looked around, and all was silent except for the fluttering above her head. She knew it was her daughter's avian.
She looked back to the pride, and with what strength she had, she roared as loud as she could.
Come she spoke in a booming voice, help.
She lay her head down again, closed her eyes and kept close to her children.
She only hoped someone would hear, so they could be safe.
She cared for them.

Never far from his sister's side, the silver-maned shadow had followed at a few lengths. It was easier to keep an eye on Nakama and the surrounding area. In the year that he'd spent with the guardians of the Dawn Walkers, he had learned several survival tactics both for his own preservation and, more importantly, the preservation of his fellows. Move down wind, move at a distance, see the whole battlefield, and never rush into anything. As eager as he was to see his mother, and to a lesser extent his father, Gaddith moved at a steady pace that allowed him to concentrate mostly on listening, smelling, and observing.
Nakama wasn't exactly oblivious, but her mind was on her family and while she could more than handle herself, she was still his sister and would always fall under the over-protective paw of her older brother.
Glancing skyward, he caught the cries of his sister's avian and frowned. Something was wrong. Assumptions were confirmed as Nakama rushed forward like a fireball over the sands. Narrowing his pale eyes against the sunlight, he broke into long, even strides over the sand. The territory was still very familiar for him. While he and his sister had been sent away from their home pride, they had remained in the desert. A good distance, but still close enough for the occasional visit.
"Nakama!" He called ahead, "What is it?"In the opposite direction, Sinbad had managed to make off with a portion of the day's kill. Unable to do much more than play the role of a glorified nanny, Sinbad had become something of a joke to the firekin. Where he'd once been arrogant and vile, he'd become humble and over-sensitive. Some pride members agreed that he'd taken a turn for the better following his curse while others, most including his kin, felt that the lion had become something of an embarrassment to their proud lineage. Most of the time, he was left to himself and to his mate but during pridal gatherings he gathered himself up to attend. His son, Ali Baba, had assumed the unofficial role as patron of their family. He was headstrong, stubborn, and ambitious. He might have made a good leader if not for his complete disregard for common sense.
Sinbad sighed and took a moment to re-adjust the kill in his mouth. It was at that moment when a desperate cry reached his ears. Lifting a pair of great, mis-matched eyes, he drew in a sharp breath and let his jaw fall slack. His mate... Oh Finar-Si, his cubs!
Desperation flooded his chest and soon he was tearing forward. Muscles and joints remembered themselves and while they ached in protest, Sinbad drove them forward. A thousand scenarios played out in his mind, none of them good, as to why Karana was calling out. Perhaps she was in labor already or perhaps... perhaps something was wrong.
After what felt like an eternity, Sinbad came loping into view, exhausted from the run and frantic with worry. His eyes went wide as the smell of blood flooded his senses and hit his stomach like a sack of cold stone. "...Karana..."

Karana'Mzaana looked up to Sinbad, her eyes tired, her breath slow, and she offered a soft smile. She motioned to the cubs beside her, "come see," she spoke softly, "your newest legacy" she emphasized, for she had a feeling in her veins she could not ignore, thought she held onto what strength she had, watching the avian above.
Soon, in the distance, she saw two forms approaching. Her fur stood on end on the back of her neck, but settled once they came closer into view - she had not been sure if the nergui monsters had returned.
Not just Nakama, no, but Gaddith, her dark, elder son. She felt tears in her eyes.
Heart beats fast Colors and promises How to be brave How can I love when I'm afraid
It all seemed to be a miracle, and as her children ran towards her, she glanced to those at her side, to Sinbad, and a smile that was so dinstinct to Mzaa spread across her maw.
"Mother!"Mwako'Nakama called forth, and as she drew closer, Kessek stayed above to keep watch in case those that had left came back. She would be the alarm. But Kessek felt a great hurt in her chest. Her master, her who she saw as kin, Nakama, had been through so much. It wasn't fair.
"Mother," Mwako'Nakama spoke, her pace slowed to a halt as she took slow steps towards her mother and father, Gaddith close, her eyes held happiness. She had returned, risen and come again like the cycle of the sun, but this...no.
"My children," Mzaa spoke, and closed her eyes, capturing the scent of her Nakama and Gaddith once again. It had been so long.
She hoped the others would come, see them, Naar especially. She knew Nakama had a great love for her orange pelted sister. As she opened her silver eyes, Mzaa watched Nakama, strong, weathered by travel, but firekin still the same.
But watching you stand alone All of my doubt Suddenly goes away somehow
Seeing her daughter, her son, return, she had hope, rekindled, renewed in her heart, as the cubs kept close to her side.
Time stands still beauty in all she is I will be brave I will not let anything Take away What's standing in front of me Every breath, Every hour has come to this
"I've waited so long," Mzaa said softly, she looked to Sinbad, "they came home to us."
"Mother," Nakama spoke, and she came to rest beside her mother, seemingly nestling Mzaa along her side. And Nakama tried to be strong, feeling the blood on her fur, it pained her more than any wound.
"It'll be all right," Mzaa spoke, "you will see."
waiting for you Darlin' don't be afraid

Gaddith stepped up, silent as a stone. His features were grim and his eyes were furious but in the wake of emotions that came crashing down onto the heads of himself and his family, the lion reigned in his own grief and fury. Sinbad was in no state to take such a thing. The lion's eyes were flooded before he even reached his mate's side.
Stepping up slowly, and silently, Gaddith dipped his head and pressed his forhead against that of his mother's. "Shhh... save your strength. We're here."
Sinbad, his stomach rolling at the thick stench of blood on the wind, slowly and carefully approached the broken body of his mate. Fresh guilt rushed through him as memories pricked at the back of his mind. His other fling... he'd been disloyal but she'd never stopped caring for him. Even when he'd been... well less than likable. Less than kind, less than compassionate.
"Mzaana...." He managed to choke out, his mismatched eyes roaming her form. Oh Finar-Si...the children.

Yes, they were there, but not all of them. She peered around for her other children, any and all of her kin, firekin, this was her home, all here, her family. And here, was where she felt safe, home, peace. She smiled at that thought, peace, in a fighting, warring pride. She would have chuckled but she saved her strength as her dark son suggested.
"Where is Mwako?" Nakama said, questioning, "naar, the others?" why hadn't they come.
Mwako'Damu was supposed to protect her, all of them. She felt gutted, hurt, beyond words. But she felt her mother nudge her.
"He's been helping the pride, he should be close," she hoped, Mzaa looked to the dunes. No other movement spotted yet.
"I will go find him," Kessek said from the air, coming close to hear, Nakama looked to her avian and nodded and the bird went off as fast as her wings could take her. She did not want to fail her friend.
Mzaa closed her eyes. But felt Sinbad close, his scent distinct, and she smiled towards him.
"Our family rises, like your strength, you must be strong for them all now," her love, she wanted to say, but she knew not if it was the time. But, then again, perhaps it was. "You must take them to safety," Mzaa said softly, "but call for Fia, Naar, Mwako," she went to say Kidondo, but her throat felt dry. She hoped he would hear as well.
"You must keep them strength," and she meant in every essence of the word. Strength in family, teaching, name. She wanted no other children of hers to leave the lands.
Mwako'Nakama looked to her father, her brother, to her mother and the dunes. She would not leave her mother's side, no. "You two must move them, and find those she wishes to see," she said in a murmur, still keeping herself close, her face, barely visible as she pressed it against Mzaa's side. "I will stay, I will keep her safe."
Nakama's eyes met Gaddith's and hoped he understood her silent words. She knew their father needed to move the children, but he'd need help. There were many cubs for such a dry time.
And she didn't want to leave her mother, not after so long.
"Look to the future of the firekin," Mzaa said smiling, keeping her head close to the cubs as they wriggled. Six in total. The fire kissed boy, dark flame daughter, the smoldering girl of crimson, and two dark boys. Then there was the smallest, the youngest of them all, such a light color, like that of Naar, but markings so unique, although vastly different, reminded Mzaa of Nakama, and made her believe her sons and daughters would always rise.
But the future needed to be secure, moved and safe. She only hoped that if the others she wished to see weren't on their way already, they might hear a call for them.

He'd been awakened from sleep by a vision, of pain and claws and... It was so unlike any he normally had, usually so focused on his family. And yet... Something told him it was still family, and to go toward one of the outposts. With his recovered eagle flying on his shoulder, Kosuke had gone out into the desert, partly to see what intuition was informing him of, and to see if he could find water springing up. As he slid down into a dune, he sent Kenta up into the sky, only for the eagle to return just as he heard a roar. The alarm in the bird's eyes had been enough to tell him it was about the roar. The hulking red lion charged up the dunes, a worry gripping at him. His vision...
He crested another dune, and soon spotted a different red lion, a black, a striped-gold lioness... And another lioness. His father, half-brother, half-sister, and step-mother. His vision... Kosuke hurried over, sending out a call of his own, to let them know he was there. "Father! Gaddith! Nakama!" He got close, saw the wounds on Mzaana. He hadn't yet seen the cubs. "What happened here?" It wasn't a demand, but he already knew... Claws... Pain... He looked to his half-siblings for answers, not wanting them from the older lions. He wasn't about to ask Sinbad, and it was clear Mzaana needed to save her strength.

Mzaa kept her eyes looking from Sinbad, to her elder children, and to the new. They had to transport them, but she feared if she stood, if she stood...no, she couldn't think it. Not now. She glanced upwards though as a sounding roar returned, not Fia nor Kidondo, nor Naar, but another part of her family, no matter what bloodline. So she closed her eyes then and tried to focus on ehr breathing, her children at ehr side. They all needed to be safe here.
At Kosuke's words, even his presence, Nakama looked to him, amazed that she was even remembered, it touched her heart that those here still knew her, blood family or not. She thought if she had left, huria more than her brother Gaddith, she'd be cast to the wind like a grain of sand. It made her heart ache.
"I don't know," Nakama said honestly, and it hurt her to know she knew not the reason. What would nergui gain from attacking a pregnant lioness? "But I had heard of what was happening when I came in contact with another firekin, Spaki, was his name, he told me about warring times, so I wanted to come and help." And she'd just arrived.
"I came to welcome your sister home," Mzaa said softly, aiming her voice at Kosuke, regardless if he wished for her to speak or not, "but they came first. There were three, one appeared crazed, the male assisted her, but the third stopped them," she did not understand why. But his build was so firekin like, it was hard to deny. But she said nothing. "The third did not seem to know what the female's plan was."
With those words Nkamaa's fur bristled on her neck, and she looked to Kessek, "find her scent," and the bird nodded and began scanning the sands where it had been scuffled. Kessek collected strands of hair, fur, from those Nakama felt were worthy of remembering, this on the other paw, was a different circumstance all together.
"Kosuke," Nakama said, "have you seen Mwako'Damu? we need help transporting the children."
"And Naar, and Fia and Kidondo, I want to see them," Mzaa said tiredly.
"Shh now," but the glint in Nakama's eyes as she looked to Kosuke were hard. Nakama was angered, fire boiling in her blood.

The more that was said, the more Kosuke's hackles raised. This seemed so... Barbaric! Whatever these strange lions had wanted... He wondered if they got it. Anger the Firekin? Like smacking a bee hive? "I haven't seen Mwako, no..." He looked to the sky at Kenta, letting out a short roar. When the bird landed on his back, he turned to him. "Kenta, you know what Mwako'damu looks like." At the slightly confused look, he let out a growl. "Red, white, and black, he has a flame mark on his rear something like Mzaana's, but in the orange of Father's mane. He has a black mark on his chin that matches his mane. Go find him, and do it FAST!" When the bird took off, he turned his attention back to the injured lioness. It was only then he noticed the cubs. The red lion was silent a moment, before his face darkened. His vision... "Whoever did this... Is going to die... And they are going to die VERY slowly." He now wanted nothing more than to torture the perpetrators.

"My thoughts exactly," Nakama said as her eyes narrowed.
"Hush, both fo you, now is not the time," Mzaa said with a motherly, stern voice. She did not want the young cubs, though they would not understand, to be exposed to such things, whether they could understand such tones or not.
Meanwhile, Kessek had returned, grasping a small tuft of fur strands in one claw, and in her beak, something else. More red. And she came to Nakama, and tied the fur strange in her elongated fur atop her head. Nakama quirked a brow, Kessek offered a smile, "your mother, she fought hard," it was evident by the strands Kessek was able to grasp.
Kessek, though avian, knew lion loyalty was thick in family and blood, and, with what occurred, her friend being huria beyond the borders, she wanted Nakama to have her mother with her always...in a manner of speaking and thought.
"I have what you'll need, but we should wait for the others, one that would know what to do. She said a regents name, yes?" Kessek was taught certain things, names, ranks, so she hoped she was right. Perhaps the regent would know what to do.
But in case they wanted Kessek to be rid of the scent...she kept a piece hidden in her feathers...she knew her friend would want to bring justice to her mother's attacker.
"Thank you Kessek."
"Of course."
Further along the dunes Mwako'Damu strode looking into teh lands. They ahd returned not long ago, the dark pelt still slung around his shoulders, his avian Kooka perched on his back. It was a strange day, something felt off. He thought he heard something, but then it became very still. And he did not know where to go.
"Kooka sees dark>"
Mwako'Damu turned to look at the sky and saw a bird, incoming.
A nergui scout?
No, surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to come in this far. He'd have Kooka ground him if it was.

The eagle soon spied... Dark. A dark pelt. But it moved weird... It was simply a WORN pelt, not a living one. It had ceased to be, as it were. And there, a red and white lion... And just peaking out, a flame on the rear... Black mark on the chin... Kenta beat his wings, before gliding down. His presence wasn't a well-recognized one around the pride yet, unlike Shumusi's, so he didn't want to appear a danger. As he got closer, he circled over the lion's head. "You're Mwako'damu, yes?" He beat his wings, keeping his pace. "Back the way I came... A lioness with a mark like your rear mark... Black and silver... Kosuke sent me to find you!" He beat his wings again, trying not to lose altitude. "Sinbad and two others are there - A black lion with a white mane, and a gold lioness with stripes!" He then tilted, flying back over the dunes. "You need to follow me, and HURRY!"

Mwako'Damu looked to the sky and as the bird got closer, it, knew who he was? Who was this thing? Before he could speak the bird seemed to be speaking with such quick words, such..anxiety, perhaps even frustration, exhaustion, and when he heard the descriptions: black with white and striped.
His siblings.
They'd returned?
Before he could think as to why this bird was speaking with such urgency, Mwako'Damu roared aloud, "take me there!" and he began running in the direction the bird has originated, and he let the bird lead him.
Kooka, all the while, clinging for life against the pelt on Mwako's back.
