Lutum rolled his shoulders in a silent shrug. To each their own, and if Eione wanted to make friends and risk losing them to the disease, that was her choice. He...well, it wasn't that he was trying to protect himself from heartache. He just had yet to really make a friend.
He liked being in the pride more than he'd liked walking beyond his endurance every day. But the adolescent was still having trouble trusting anyone other than his sister. It was foolish, he'd had ample opportunity to see that the people in the Kitwana were quite different from Aestivus, but he still thought that way.
"Suit yourself," he replied shortly.

"I will," she murmured in reply, though normally it would have been with more annoyance over Lutum's indifference and anti-social tendencies. Today, she understood him a little better, even if she somehow managed to keep her more optimistic view despite her grief and frustration.
"I think I want to become a healer," she said suddenly, her voice still quiet like she wasn't sure it would make any sense considering why this conversation was happening and who she was talking to, "You don't think it's too late to train, do you?"
Eione knew they could take a common rank if they wanted, she had just never taken advantage of it before. Most young members of the pride became apprentices much earlier, started learning sooner.

The young lion looked at his sister again in surprise. If she'd had any thoughts of choosing the Healer's path before, she'd never once mentioned them to him. He wondered if it was something she'd considered prior to losing a friend. The boy didn't for a moment doubt that Nyesha's death had some bearing on the decision.
"I don't think it would ever be too late to train as a Healer," he answered slowly. "Not in this pride." In fact, he suspected that even if a lion on their deathbed wanted to learn, they would be taught, if only to take their mind of their impending death. But Eione didn't need to know that supposition.

Eione didn't need to look at Lutum to know the look he was giving her, what she could see in her peripheral vision was more than enough to know it was exactly what she expected. He barely understood having friends, there was no doubt in her mind this was even more ridiculous to him.
"You're probably right," she said, managing a small smile, "Do you think I'd be any good at it?"

Another snort. This one accompanied by a half-smile. "If you want to be good at it, you'll be the best there is," Lutum told his sister with complete faith. Eione was, in his lifetime of experience, very determined when she wanted. And if there was something she felt had to happen, it would. No question about it.
So if she wanted to be a Healer, she would be a very skilled one.

She knew there was only one right answer to her question and Lutum was smart enough to know it but she was happy to hear just how confident he was in her capabilities. It cheered her up more to hear it- and to know she had a plan, something to focus on besides the loss of her friend.. her own way of coping with it, even.
"You know," she said, "It might do you some good to take a common rank and really do something."

Lutum's only reply to that was a wordless growl. It lacked the heat he might have shown to anyone else, but that was because Eione was the only person he'd never do anything to. And she knew it. And was prone to taking advantage of it. Which was hardly fair, but neither was life.
He mentally reviewed the conversation. Depressed sister, check. Cheering up said sister, check. Supporting said sister, check. He really didn't have any other obligations keeping him here, and he certainly didn't need more lectures or any insults.
The brown lion straightened with what dignity he had and headed in the opposite direction of where Eione was walking. Maybe he'd find a nice rock to nap on.

Eione stopped walking when Lutum growled, turned and walked off. She watched him go, frowning after him. She didn't expect him to be open to the idea, she wasn't stupid and she knew when she was pushing it- especially with him. But she wasn't wrong to say it would do him some good.. if he let it.
Still, somehow it hurt more than normal for him to say nothing and walk away from her and yet, as always, she wouldn't chase after him. Left by herself again, she was exactly where she started earlier in the morning. Aimless. She could find someone to talk to, if she was serious about becoming a healer there were plenty of people she could approach.. but she wasn't ready yet.
So with a sad sigh, she decided to continue on her way to see where the day might take her.
Fin!
