She peered down on them, her eyes alight with rage. How dare these huge predators come and disrupt life here! The tiny squirrel scrambled down the nearby cliffside, chittering angrily. Her band was a quiet one usually, only having to endure the harassment of the seabirds. Who had invited these monsters to the party, anyway?! She danced along a very narrow ledge, chattering her teeth in fury. She had to think of a way to drive them off! She was relatively safe up here, beyond their reach, but surely there was something she could do from this vantage point?
Her paws searched around and came across a slithering pile of pebbles. A few rained down below as she grabbed a few of the larger ones. AHA! Ammunition! With a high pitched squeal, she danced back along the ledge, took aim, and hurled one of the pebbles at a randomly chosen target. It didn't go far, of course, but oh, if only she could thwack one of them!

"By the Stormlord's taint, Galning, this bird sounds just like you when you've had too much mint," Asper japed with laughter in his voice before adding on, "oooh, she glared at us. I think she likes you, cousin."
Sometimes it was just too easy. Asper was feeling good, letting loose. Though this was supposed to be something of a serious thing, Asper felt free. His boys would both be grown by the time they returned, but there was enough family left behind to look after them while he was gone. Pythis, Tim.. even Atheris, he supposed.
Asper briefly turned his attention back to the bird before catching sight of another lioness throwing something into the water. As he stood in the waves his paw hit a rock, and so following suit Asper cupped his paw and hefted it further out into the ocean.

"Shut up, Asper," Galning grumbled. "Maybe it's you she's making eyes at," he said, sneaking a sly look back at Aluka.
His attention divided between Aluka and Asper, Galning hadn't any to spare for the squirrel that was hurling projectiles toward him. At least not until one of those projectiles stung his ear.
"Balls!" he exclaimed, spinning so fast that the current tangled his legs and he fell into the saltwater, only to come up sputtering moments later, demanding to know, "Who did that?"

Ha! She'd stung one of them! She danced along her ledge and cackled in her squeaky voice. "Big mean cats, acting foolish and disrupting good beasts' lives! Go home, ugly hunters!" Her tail was bristling bravely as she scampered to and fro on her ledge high above the lions' heads. She shifted another pebble in her paws and hurled it down towards the stupid felines. Big meanies, always thinking they could have their way, just because they were... big! She huffed and puffed out her fluffy but thin chest. "Go home!" she squeaked again, throwing yet another pebble, though the ocean's roar and hiss nearly drowned out her tiny voice.

Deciding it was best not to focus on the pair of males, Aluka kept her attention on the gull. She'd get back at them later, when she was healthier and more battle-ready. Big fish with sharp teeth? Well, she figured that was as good a sea monster as any. "Great! Yes, we're trying to catch one of those." She confirmed, because why would she lie to a random bird?
"Do you know what can attract them quickly?" And perhaps he had even seen one lately! Even if this bird didn't prove too useful, Aluka wasn't too worried about wasting time. "And can you see them from above? Have any been around? If you help us out, I can save you a chunk of meat."

Ru continued to pace along the water's edge muttering. His words went back and forth between imprecation and imploring. As time passed and no better ideas came to him, he took a few steps deeper into the water, so that the waves now buffeted his chest rather than his legs.
He could swim. He didn't like it much. But he could swim. If need be, he would. The words he used to curse began to outnumber the rest of his words. He didn't want to be forced to swim.
"Galning," he called, deciding to pull rank. "Since you're already wet, swim out a little farther."

The squirrel laughed and danced back and forth. Those predators were afraid! Afraid of water! In fact, she got to laughing so hard, she slipped from her ledge! With a startled squeak, she scrabbled and caught some hanging vegetation, easily using it as a ladder to skitter onto a lower ledge. She was still above those silly lions' reach, but not by much. She should be more careful!
Her attitude, however, had not changed at all. She cackled at the silly cats, looking so unhappy at being wet. "Haha, y es, go, swim, feed the nasty bitey fishes!" Squirrels didn't swim much, but one of her band had been unlucky enough to fall off the cliff that jutted out into the ocean. A large, sharp-toothed, evilly smiling fish had indeed eaten poor Parisk. She thought it sounded like a fascinating thing to watch. Who would win? Bitey fish, or grumpy cats?
Just to emphasize her scorn, and maybe to encourage them all into the deep water, she started flinging whatever came to hand. Twigs, bits of old wood, pebbles, and an occasional tiny seashell rained down on any lion unlucky enough to be close to the cliffs.

In the sky above another sea gull watched the lions below. She was circling above simply watching the proceedings below. She wasn't much interested in getting tangled up with the lions but she was certainly intrigued by their screaming. She was also interested in the gull who was talking to the lion. She squawked at the other gull wondering what the gull thought was so interesting about the lions.

"Yes, Captain," Galning replied just as he regained his footing.
He was drenched and weighted down by the water clinging to his fur and mane. The idea of venturing deeper into the water was uncomfortable for the outlander-born lion. Nevertheless, he was sincerely trying to prove to Ru that he was a good reaver and reliable, so he walked deeper into the water until his paws could no longer touch the bottom and he was paddling against the waves.
"Munyu," he called to the white lion who he felt could use a guiding hand. "Kill the tree rat. We can offer it as a sacrifice."

"Oh, uhm."
Catch one of them? Were they insane? Then again, he did just watch them roar at the ocean and chunk rocks at it. So they weren't attacking the ocean, but trying to attract one of the big things. He'd seen them. Many weird things in the ocean. He slitted his eyes wryly as he placed another feather.
"Kree know what attract. Blood attract. Seen them many time, come in near shallows when the sun comes up and the sun goes down usually. Big, dark shadows. Dark, dark, dark they look from the air. Kree will help. Hungry and meat is good. Lioness is good lion."
He lifted his head and glanced towards the squirrel that was making a ruckus. He'd pay her a visit later. He liked harassing the squirrels. Plus, when he could snag one, their babies were delicious. His attention was caught by the caw of another seagull. He tipped his own head and called back, a raucous thing that sounded much like laughter. These lions were hilariously interesting.

Good! It seemed Aluka had secured them an ally in this mission. It would be nice to have a pair eyes in the sky, especially if he could see it coming. "Great! Thank you," Was his name Kree? Well, she thought it was. "Kree. You are a good gull."
Having ignored the squirrel so far, she made a face when a small rock finally hit her. But not to be distracted form her mission, she looked back at the gull. "Do you think you could fly over, and let us know if you see one coming? If you do it'll be easier to catch it." Without one of them getting killed. She had no idea if the monster that turned up would be gigantic, or how it would behave.
She best get back to trying to lure this big fish over. With a last nod and a brief smile to Kree, not quite knowing if he'd do her the favor of playing sentry, she trotted back towards. Apparently one of those dumb males had gotten in pretty deep. Aluka wasn't quite as willing to getting somewhere she couldn't touch the floor, in her current state she'd be washed away. But she waded out until the waves were hitting her chest.
The bird said blood... well, so be it. She had seen someone toss a rotting fish into the ocean, but perhaps something fresh was necessary. She grimaced, shrugged, then raised a paw and bit down on her skin. Somehow it hurt a bit more when doing it to yourself, but Aluka broke the skin and at least a bit of blood came out. Hopefully not too much blood would be needed. Not wanting to get anyone laughing at her over it, even with Galning out in the sea, she quickly put her paw back in the water as if nothing happened, and promptly ignored the sting the salt had on even such a small wound.

Ru shook his head and walked to the shore. The portion of his mane that covered his chest was damp and dripping onto the sand beneath his paws as he sat down and watched his band try to attract a sea monster. This wasn't a matter of him lazing while other worked. He was trying to ascertain what everyone was trying and determine what might be the most successful method so they could all concentrate on one thing.
He noticed Aluka talking to a seagull, but he had to strain to make out what was being said between them. It seemed to him that the gulls circling overhead were definitely laughing at his band's efforts, which was both annoying and understandable. He'd be laughing, too, if it wasn't so important to him that they accomplish this somehow.
"Blood sacrifice?" he asked, trotting over to Aluka. "Not a bad idea, but probably not enough blood, and not likely to get far enough out into the water with the waves. I think we could refine this to make it more effective. Maybe something ritualized."
He wasn't quite asking her opinion. He was the captain and he was a thrall. Still, there was an implied question, whether she thought that seemed like a more likely idea than what everyone was currently trying.

She hadn't really been wanting anyone to see that, but of course knew better than to look like an embarrassed cub when the warlord came over. "The bird said they're attracted by blood." Maybe they could smell it, somehow, in the water. She figured the lifestyle of a sea monster must mean a few rather different senses, though Aluka personally couldn't imagine what it would be like sniffing stuff out while under water. But he had a point, it wasn't likely this was enough blood to get anyone's attention.
She agreed with a nod; they needed more blood, and they needed to get it out there. "What do you suggest?" She wasn't quite willing to rip herself open and flail around in the deeper waters, and hope they all managed to kill the monster before it killed her. Considering her rank, Aluka doubted anyone would try very hard to ensure her safety.

Ru glanced over at Galning and smirked wickedly. Then he whispered conspiratorially, "We could always sacrifice him. He's going to drown himself soon anyway, if he doesn't come back to shore. What do you think?"
He picked on Galning, but he wouldn't really sacrifice him. Even if he got irritating, as he could easily do when he tried to do, well, anything, Ru wouldn't sacrifice him. He couldn't afford to. He needed ten people who were willing to die for him, and that meant he had to keep them alive.
"I have an idea," he said. He just didn't think it would be a popular one.
He wanted to have someone find something that would function like a bowl and have everyone bleed into it a little. Or maybe a thin skin would be better. Perhaps then they could convince the not-quite-helpful seagulls to cross the line and be actually helpful and carry their mixed blood out to sea and drop it.
"Everyone, come over here," he called. "I have an idea."

Halvdan had been awfully quiet for being the Sea Monster Expert. He walked the shore, and seemed to be looking for something in the sand. What he was looking for was anyone's guess. Sea monster tracks? Now and then he would claw at the sand and examine whatever it was he had spotted, only to discard it and keep looking. If there was some method to this madness it was only obvious to Halvdan himself.
He stopped what he was doing when Ru called them all over, and padded closer to hear what the Captain had in mind.
