[Event] Race Down the Mountain - Over

No conscious thought went into the decision to simply leap over the spot where he had seen Ardhi'Zonga (Was that his name?) slow, rather than deal with whatever hazard had caused his competitor to stumble. It did not occur to him that looking back to check on Song's progress might have been a contributing factor because that was something Song would never have done.

A trait which did not always serve Song well was his habit of not checking others' reactions. Most of the time this made him seem as if he was a self-absorbed, arrogant arse, but there were times when it served him well. For instance, when he was running, Song never looked behind him, or even to the sides. His entire focus was on what was ahead of him. Thus, he did not see the lioness falter when the wind turned against her, but he did notice the lion who had taken the lead (It was Ardhi, wasn't it?) slow up and stumble.

Song's leap carried him over the spot and his eyes widened while he was still airborne with the realization that he was jumping down a mountain, which meant that while there would probably be ground eventually, it might not come as soon as he anticipated. He extended his forelegs and reached for the ground, hoping not to wipe out completely upon landing.

Trying to keep up with the young ones was difficult! The way they ran was like they'd be blessed by the divine themselves, and it was something Kipenzi was having difficulty with. What had started off as a modest run had now slowed considerably as she tried to navigate shifting stones and the downward slope.

She tried not to notice the expressions of others, but it was hard when it was what she relied on thanks to her lose of hearing. Naturally it was the ones that had stumbled and were struggling that she concentrated on, which loosened her own morale, causing her to stumble on the terrain.

Kai's feet remained stable upon the rough terrain, despite her ragged nerves. She had so many thoughts, but she tried so hard to focus merely on the path before her! If she didn't, she knew she would meet as grizzly a fall as the poor lion behind her. Or the lioness now struggling against the wind to regain her composure.

Kaimana lightly shook her head, her eyes held tight on the course before her. IT was then that she noticed the downward slope coming at her, she hadn't prepared for something like that! The increased velocity, hat her legs would have to exert?! Could she keep up with it?!

Kaimana sucked in one deep breath, let out a smell yelp and headed down the slope just as the lions before her had.

Aristaeus grimaced as the other lions began to pull out ahead of him. He summoned all of his gumption and gathered his legs under him

And stumbled again, though not as badly as before. His chin hit a stone and he bit his tongue. He was falling further and further behind the rest of the lions. He growled under his breath as he spit out some blood to his side. No wonder he always disappointed his father... He was an embarrassment to the god of ashes.

She was still stinking at this. Upendo was falling behind, even with her relatives calling out support and encouragement. She lost ground as she stopped to laugh at her cousin crashing into a bush, before jumping back to running. Or sliding... Falling with style? Barely-controlled falling... She wasn't doing much running and having a hard time finding a good grip on the ground and slope. Loose stones here and there, little though they were, threatened to send her ROLLING down the mountain, something that she was sure would end in a disaster she did NOT want to happen.

Song's landing was not nearly as smooth as he had hoped it would be. His front paws hit, but his back paws couldn't seem to find dirt and just kept moving forward and down, going past his forepaws and pitching him forward, haunches over head. What came next was both painful and embarrassing as Song rolled over twice before coming to a dead halt half upside down with his bum hanging over his shoulders.

"Ow," he whimpered as he untangled his legs and began laboriously to right himself. As he did so, he looked around surreptitiously, hoping nobody had seen him wipe out but knowing that was just not possible. People had seen. If not his fellow competitors then the lions assembled to watch.

No time to lose in worries, he decided, shaking his head and sending pebbles and dirt flying. Once he had his feet under him, he was off again.

Noka's eyes wanted to drift to the other competitors as they too began to stumble down the terrain. The mountain surface was such a difference than the swamplands she grew up in. She found it easy to manuever the muddy waters and sticky sludge, but here was a whole nother ball game.

Even though she felt as if she was being as careful as possible, luck was not in her favor. The wind picked up, causing debris to float through her vision. She stumbled, disoriented, and sliced a paw pad on a jagged rock. Hissing, she stopped completely. Other lions were passing her, but she needed to make sure that the wound wasn't a bad one.

Ardhi had slowed his pace considerably after his near-fall, not wanting to feel the wrath of the mountain side against his tender body. He'd resisted the urge to look back at the others, as well. So far he was still doing pretty well, but he knew the longer he kept being cautious the faster others' would catch up to him.

It wasn't really easy wanting to throw caution to the wind when you saw another lion crash into the ground though… and that is exactly what he saw Song do! Though… it was probably unavoidable with the sort of leap the lion had just taken, flying right overhead!

He grimaced, coming up fast to where Song was writing himself to continue the race.

Daisha was seriously lagging behind. The rocks and loose gravel was a lot more slippery than she thought! She was forced to slow down to keep from tumbling headfirst down the slope. Though, she was a little guilty and glad to see that others were in the exact same trouble as she was. But not all of the others. A few lions had managed to pull ahead, and their leads were pretty strong.

Okay, we've got to get ourselves together and go if we wanna finish, she thought to herself, trying to motivate herself as she weaved around obstacles, and tried her best to overcome a grey male that was just ahead of her. Another female with a dark coat wasn't too far ahead either.

While not moving as fast as the others, Kipenzi was taking her easy time down the side of the mountain, wary of the same loose stones that had sent her crashing before. If she couldn't learn to control herself she'd never make it down - period!

Setting her jaw in a firm line, she gave a little burst of speed, but a cautious one at that. She could see the others falling, stumbling and tripping, and had no desire to be part of it!

She was getting more and more confident with each stride she took! This race wasn't going to be so bad afterall, and win or lose she would have an amazing story to tell once it was all over! But she couldn't think about that now, the steeper the slope got the more rubble she began to encounter! It would only take a simple mistake to make her go flying through the air, and she didn't want that on her record. Not only would no one let her live it down, but she might not live through it!

Ha! She narrowly avoided another puddle of rocks as she slid to the right! A smile crossed her face as she watched it pass to her left, grateful that no one had been unlucky enough to slip on it.

Lilija focused on her breathing. Her legs working as quickly as they could while trying to be careful. She was starting to pull ahead of other lions without even thinking about it. The huntresses mind wasn't on winning, it was on using this to hone her hunting skills, to be more efficient. She didn't know anyone on the mountain with her, despite having lived int he pride her whole life, but that was fine. She recognized some of them from returning hunting parties. Maybe after this she would attempt to befriend some of them?

No stay focused. Just run.

While traversing a narrow portion of the course, Songvari loses his footing and falls, suffering a moderate injury of your choosing. He takes a -2 to his next two rolls (but no backtracking/negative totals, so if he were to roll a 1 it would just turn to 0), then a -1 to his rolls for the remainder of the race.

Man, he felt really out of shape. Aristaeus wasn't much keeping up with the body of the pack, and his self doubt was hindering him more than anything else.
He watched some lions stumble like he had, though he was able to see because he was behind. The brown lioness with green tipped paws deftly navigated around a group of rocks. It looked like she would at least finish in the top three.

Ari lost concentration on his own running because he focused on the other participants. But a sharp jab in his paw as he stepped on a thorny branch on the track brought him back to his senses.

The green lioness examined her paw pad. The rock had made a nice slice in it, but nothing that serious. She spotted the rivet of blood that began to creep out of it and grimaced. Surely it wouldn't be the best to run on it. However, this was a race, and injury or not she was determined to finish it. Without a second thought, Noka sprinted out from her halted position, leaping from a rock to a path below. Surely that would help her regain some time she had lost.
