Meili was born to poverty, sickness, and death. She was raised in the pit of the world -- the places that saw the most suffering in the absence of an Avatar. She lost her mother to the birth of her younger brother. A sickness overtook them both, caused by the horrible conditions in which they had to live. Neither recovered. Both died. Meili was left alone with her father, who blamed not only himself, but also the absent Avatar. After all, if the Avatar were around to do his job, the world would not be in such a mess, life would be better and easier, and there would not be so much suffering. Meili carried that mindset to adulthood, especially after her father perished when she was twelve years old. He worked in a mine in a Fire Nation Colony in order to support his small family and was killed in a cave-in, leaving Meili an orphan. She managed to be picked up by an acting troupe, who recognized the grace of an Airbender and the promise of a dancer in her. They brought her to Ember Island, where she joined the theater and flourished.

Some people have all of the luck. Not Taylor Childe, however. From a young age Taylor had a habit of getting into trouble. Usually it was the simple, mischievous attitude prevalent in children, but one day his antics indirectly resulted in the death of his parents. His bad luck continued until one day he found himself cornered and nearly killed by a group of low lives. It was thankfully through the charity of a passing thief that he was able to escape with his life. For the next two years the thief taught the boy all of the tricks he knew about the ways of the knife. When he was finished he let the boy go to follow his own path. Taylor, after realizing the cruel state of the world, vowed to one day make the world a better place. He's still waiting to ACTUALLY work to make the world a better place. Born among the Sun Warriors Mei spent her childhood there, learning much about the roots of fire bending and living with fire as life affirming energy. To the dismay of her parents the girl wanted more out of life, she'd heard stories from an old traveler about many fantastic places found in the outside world. Massive cities, academies of bending, music ships. So many wonderful things. Still in her early teens she set out to see the world the man had spoken of. Within the fire nation she sought out more training but languished under master after master as her old world cultural values clashed with modern thinking. Soon she found herself without a teacher, without a home, and all alone. For a about a year she spiraled downward until chance brought her across a new teacher.

This man had trained with the old man she'd known as a child and seemed more understanding of how to train her than previous masters. For years she studied under him and even learned to generate lightning. Now in her twenties she had come to learn all she could under her teacher. There was just one problem though, she yearned for more just as she had among her people while still a child. The old man had also spoken of spirits an entire world beyond their own but this teacher had no such insights, no such fanciful connections to a spirit realm. He had become lost to a mad obsession, one in which he wanted Mei to become his deceased wife. They fought periodically even while training together as their relationship became strained due to him trying to change her personality. Eventually one such argument brought them to blows in a battle at the Forgotten Valley when it was revealed that he wanted to force her to adopt his wife's face. That battle ended with her master's death.

Distraught bytheir falling out, taking another's life, and the trauma of the ordeal she'd remain within the valley for three years. Meditating alone and practicing in isolation save for the occasional lost soul there to die she remained until she unlocked the door to a new style. Now twenty five she found herself without direction and for the first time in her life was okay with it. She felt at peace with the world, connected even. Eventually she found herself in the capital of the Fire Nation where she entered a tournament based on the traditional Agni Kai. During this tournament she demonstrated to a stunned crowd her ability to actually manipulate lightning. Even though she handily defeated her opponent the traditionalist judges ruled her as disqualified. Still the news of such a person spread quickly as she garnered national attention as the first true lightning bender. Mei's fame however, wasn't cemented until she averted an angry spirit's attack at Ember Island. People were enamored with this girl who had not only developed lightning bending further but who became known as a fire bender capable of pacifying a spirit through bending.

Dubbed the "Lightning Queen" by the press she soon found herself regarded as a master and discovered that she was now being sought out by people who wished to learn from her. Most were turned away as the vast majority of them lacked to ability to advance beyond simply generating lightning. Having grown tired of stuffy Fire nation nobles yelling at her when their sons or daughters failed to learn to her skills in the pursuit of fame. She washed up in Republic City, where many benders still sought training from her but at least they came from different walks of life and had stories to share. Now at thirty eight years old her reputation is a mixed one but her skills are still well known.

Niyok is the child of two Southern Water Tribe natives, both of whom came to Republic City under the promise of a better life. Their father worked in a factory assembling parts for the various machines that cropped up around the city, and their mother worked at a food cart. They didn't have much money, but it was enough to get by. When Niyok was six, their father died in a factory accident and, with her income nearly cut in half, Niyok's mother was left to pick up the pieces. She began working a second job to care for Niyok. Niyok's mother bounced from job to job for years, and eventually had to pull a loan from a local shark. It was a fix for sure, but only a temporary one, for it wasn't too long after that that the Triads came looking for their money. They threatened violence if Niyok's mother was unable to pay, but Niyok had another idea. The Triad was always looking for some extra muscle to throw around, and while Niyok wasn't a bender, they were one hell of a scrapper. Eventually, the debt was paid off, but many a job well done landed Niyok a job offer. They wanted to turn it down, but the money was too good. Thus began many years of odd jobs working for the Triads and other various gangs...
