He was expecting the girl to open her mouth and speak, instead, Theodor impassively watched the girl write on a purple notebook. That was interesting, he questioned why the girl wrote her order instead of verbally telling him her order. He noticed that the girl was looking at his eyes, he stared back with his blank gaze. "I'll return with your order. Would you like anything to drink?" He didn't really wait for her to respond, he left to get her order. Theodor returned to her booth with a soda, "You wouldn't mind if I sat down and chat with you...Do you?" He was a little more stern this time, but it still held an emotionless tone.
He handed the soda to her, he had paid for her drink, it was the best he could do since he didn't really wait for her to tell him what she wanted to drink. He didn't sit down at the booth yet, he was waiting for her decision, she was the customer. Even though the girl was interesting, he couldn't just make her environment uncomfortable. "Am I being rude if I asked why you communicate with a notepad?" His eyes were still stolid, Theodor hoped he wasn't making her uncomfortable or intimidating her. That was not what he was trying to do.

Madilyn shook her head no and gestured to the seat in front of her as if to say, you can sit Max I don't mind at all. Since his last question called for more than a yes or no answer she began writing. "Well considering you did bring me a soda it isn't rude Max. I am selectively mute. I'll leave it at that. I also ask you do not question my current appearance. I don't mind chatting as long as you don't mind reading my responses Max. I suppose if we are chatting I might as well give you my name so you can address me by something other than you. I'm Madilyn. Thanks for the soda. Do you mind if I ask why you wanted to chat?" Madilyn passed him her notebook then took a sip of her soda. It wasn't too watered down or flat so she could stomach it. She then tried some of the nachos. The cheese was hot and drenched the chips. Madilyn smiled and her eyes widened with joy as she ate. They were very delicious.

He took a seat across from her, he saw her write something else down on her notepad and he waited for her to show him. He read her response, "What about your current appearance? The fact that you're wearing a hoodie with the hood covering most of your head doesn't bring to mind any questions." He said blandly. Theodor rehearsed her name in his head a few times before he attempted to say it out loud, "Madylin...Well, I wanted to know the reason behind the notepad, but if you don't wish to share. I understand. You wrote down that you're 'selectively mute' what's caused you to do so?" He saw the smile on her face after eating some of the nachos, he never really saw someone be happy from eating nachos.

Madilyn shook her head no when he pronounced her name. "Madi-lyn. Close but no dice Max. Now the reason to the notebook. How else would I communicate?"" Madilyn passed him her notebook. Once she was sure he had enough time to read she took back her notebook and wrote more, "Why am mute? Well I could fill endless notebooks on that matter. I'll put it this way. I felt like no one was even truly listening. So I stopped talking Max. That's all."

He tried to pronounce her name, he slowly uttered the word, making sure he pronounce the two syllables. "Madi-lyn....Well, I would have expected you to communicate verbally, but I apologize for my ignorance. I shouldn't be expecting things from people." He patiently watched her, his eyes tried to take a peek of her entire face from under hood. He read her notepad, "Why would someone refuse to listen to you? You shouldn't hide your voice because people won't listen. You have to cry out louder in order for them to hear." He gave her a meaningless smile, he had seen others smile before. But he could never understand why they were smiling, "This question maybe random but....Why did you smile when you ate those nachos?...I don't see any pleasure from eating nachos..."

Madilyn's eyes scanned over Max's facial expression. He was certainly an interesting individual. "You don't have to apologize Max. Now why would someone not listen? Well I can't share all of my secrets. What would we talk about the next time we spoke? As to crying out louder I'll put it this way. Say we both stick our finger in an electrical socket. You could just feel something shocking you and just pull your finger away whereas I could just start screaming and crying. We all have our ways of coping and dealing with things. My way wasn't crying out louder, it was stop crying out. As to the nachos I smiled because they were really good. I was really hungry. How do you not find pleasure in eating nachos? What do you find pleasure in?" Madilyn passed him her notebook again and awaited him to read what she had written.

He read her reply, he didn't appear interested but he actually wanted to learn more about the girl he was sitting across from. "I don't find pleasure in anything really...There's never been anything that made me smile." His monotone voice sounded serious, but it was just how he spoke. Theodor wrote something on her notepad, The silence often of pure innocence persuades when speaking fails He didn't say anything else, he waited for her response to his quote. Theodor wanted to ask her questions but he felt that it would overwhelm her, she peeked his interest. What specifically caused this girl to go mute? What was the psychological or physical reason?

Madilyn's eyes slightly narrowed when he said he didn't find pleasure in anything. "Really? You don't find pleasure in anything? Come on there has to be something." Madilyn wrote then smiled as she read the quote he'd written. "Shakespeare. Nice. I believe it's from Winter's Tale. It's certainly fitting. I for one believe sometimes silence can speak louder than words. Some people just can't handle silence for a long period of time. But do you agree?" Madilyn asked curious as to why he wrote that quote down.

He nodded his head, he liked silence more than anything else. Theodor liked the seclusion, "Silence can say more where words cannot. I like silence more than anything. But the silence you have is something different. I want to know more about you. What's caused you to go mute? Could you please remove that hood?...I want to see you better." He forced a smile on his face, but it still held no meaning. He couldn't really smile and feel happiness. But he hoped the smile was enough to persuade her. "Could you please remove your hood?"

Madilyn sighed, but compromised. She didn't completely remove her hood. She pushed it back so he could see more of her face than just her eyes. Now he could see her face and her bangs but her ears still remained hidden behind her hood. "That's as close as you'll get me to removing my hood Max. Now if I may why are you so curious as to why I'm mute?" Madilyn quickly scribbled across the page and then held it up for him to see.

He saw her face, that was good enough for him, but he didn't really smile. "You silence tells a story...I want to know it. Excuse me for a moment." Theodor took her finished nachos and took them away from the table, he returned to her booth and asked. "May I ask if I'm allowed to take you home?" He questioned why the girl didn't remove her hood entirely, it was puzzling and it made him want to find out more about her. "What made you think that no one was listening to you? I'm obviously paying attention to you. Also...Max isn't my real name, I just tell people to call me by Max."

Madilyn eyes narrowed at his words. "If anything tells a story it's your expressions. They're very persuasive, yet almost void of emotion. Now that's a story. You may ask if you're allowed, but don't you have to finish your shift? I suppose you can, but now you have to tell me your real name." Madilyn wrote across the page. Sure she didn't answer every one of his questions, but it was his turn to give her some answers.

"Then after my shift, I'll take you home." He took her pencil and notepad, he wrote his full name on the notepad and slid it across the table back to her. "Theodor Maximilian Baumgartner" Theodor looked indifferent with his name, it didn't bring him any pride or dishonor. To him, it was a name, even if it had a bloody or reputable background. "Baumgartner means tree gardener....Um...Your name..." There was a slight tone of confusion in his voice, he couldn't really recall her name. He hoped he guessed right. "Mad-" He cut himself off, he didn't want to guess wrong. But it irked him greatly, he couldn't remember the girl's name. How would this girl view him if he forgot her name in a matter of minutes? Theodor hated his inability to remember names, ironically, he could remember other things like numbers and math equations, even quotes. But names faded from his memory too quickly, maybe it was the fact that he couldn't really hold long bonds with people and he often naturally forgot names.

Madilyn sensed he was having trouble with recalling her name. She didn't mind. Madilyn simply took her notebook back and wrote, "Madilyn. Madilyn Bailey. If it helps you can call me Madi. May I call you Theo or do you prefer Max?" Madilyn had quite the interesting smile on her face. It was obvious she didn't mind that he forgot her name. If anything she found his forgetfulness a little cute. He could quote Shakespeare but he couldn't remember her name.

He apologized to her after she reminded him of her name, he tried to say the name over and over again in his head. "Madi...Madilyn...I'll attempt to make an effort to remember them better. I'm very sorry. You may call me whatever you may like." Theodor saw the smile on her face. It wasn't a smile that seemed to be mocking him, but it made him wonder what she was smiling about. He looked at the clock, then back at Madilyn, "I believe my shift is over?...Would you like me to take you home?" He made another attempt to smile, but it again didn't express much emotion. Theodor couldn't fully express himself, he was raised to have no emotion. He wasn't permitted to feel or show emotion.
