                                Taim Carver

                          ¤ Nervous ¤ Waiting room ¤ Alone ¤

The waiting room was huge. There had been a lot of people waving and wishing luck on the walk from the school to the mountain. A lot of people have arrived from the outer islands and other towns over the last couple of weeks. Too many people for Taim's taste. They where mostly in the way and asked for directions. Well he helped as much as he was able, his mother taught him so. Due to all this people there was too much work at the stable to ride or climb. To do anything remotely fun other then feed the horses, exercise the horses without riding. Well the gold chest was spilling over but that didn't matter.

As Taim looked around the huge room that was rather empty now, but he was early. His eyes got stuck on a empty seat in the corner of the room. It looked perfect to him. So with a few quick steps he parked his buttocks upon it. It was old, dry and hard wood. Not the most comfortable seat but it was better then standing for several hours. How long would they have to stay in here? There where people in the arena waiting quite clearly from the murmuring sounds from those big as doors. Teens in various ages talking, chatting and laughing all over the room. Many know each other. Some have traveled together and some been to school her in the capital together. Some faces even he knew and recognized, none that he really fancied.
He had a few friends but he remained distance in gatherings such as this. They knew and seemed to respect his wishes. Friends for a reason he guessed.
User Image
Guards didn't give much information to people who asked. Generic answers, not long. Waiting for some boats. Well this was a full day event and it was still a few hours to noon. Maybe trying to get some sleep. His nerves had kept him up all night. Then also he had to use the bathroom for the entire morning. His sister had forced down herbal tea all night for him to relax. Now it had taken it's toll on his bladder. That made him look around the room. Was there any place around here to use, in case it would be required. Doubtful, since he hadn't had eaten or had anything to drink all morning. As he looked around he met eyes with some classmates. They waved and he waved back, yet remained in his calm and quiet seat. There was people here that looked very different, Girls and boys. Slender and tall, short and thick and all other forms possible it seemed. One boy who was very tall, wide and round, looked like he could lift a mountain. Taim amused himself with the picture of him on a tiny dragon. Such would be mean if he said anything or stared at him. It gave him a smile for a moment though. Well he had to make time pass by somehow. Staring at the floor and counting hay helped just so much.

So analyzing the people around. Figuring out which dragon they would possible get and what would look funniest would be his entertainment for the coming time. Later he would be busy strolling the very soft sands. From his older siblings it was apparently the best feeling. The beaches near the docks was rough as boulders in comparison. Well he planned to rest upon it and stroll around without his boots. It was a once in a life time experience and he wouldn't let it slip by him in a crazed hunt for eggs. The odds for him was very low and as the elders says. I fit's mean tot be it's going to happen anyhow, no matter what. Yet now, here he wanted an egg. It fueled inside him. That there would be an egg for him out there. That it would be just for him and a constant companion for the rest of his life. His lost sister had connected with a dragon, so it wasn't impossible for him. This wasn't a place he wanted to think of her, he scanned the room to get her out of his head.

Rosaline walked into the the waiting room, and immediately sat down on the nearest bench, her right cheek faintly purple, with a bruise. Some idiot had pushed her on the way here for fun and she had caught her cheek on a rock. She pressed her fingertips to the bruise to see if it was still sore, and as expected it was. She scowled to herself and looked around the room at the other teenagers scattered sparsely around. Some were smiling and chatting away, excited, others, like herself were sat quietly, as if bored. She had done this before; dip your hand into some sand and see if an egg called to you. Over five years, none had called to her, and this year was her last chance to do something other than dig in the dirt for money the rest of her life.

Oh she had once had an easy life, a little too easy she thought now, but even so, she couldn't stand the idea of living in poverty forever. As much as she took pride in her hard work and was thankful for having been brought to her senses, Rosaline just wanted a better home for her mother and herself, food that filled her stomach, water that didn't need to be boiled. And maybe, a dragon could give her leeway for just that, or at least a decent job. It was that or the military, but either was fine, she supposed with a sigh and folded one of her legs over the other, one of her feet bobbing up and down impatiently. I know what's coming, let's get it over and done with, she thought to herself, looking over to the guards, as if they could speed up the proceedings. She would walk out into the sand, dig around a little and come out disappointed. But even so, the idea of being called was..well..exciting! Who wouldn't want to be called by a dragon? They were beautiful, strong creatures who anyone should be proud to ride, and even though Rosaline knew the odds were not in her favour, it couldn't hurt to dream, right?

Rosaline's brown, almost red eyes looked around the large waiting room; it was still relatively empty and she stroked the rusty sword at her belt. After a while of being in poverty, she had stolen it, deciding she was better off having some way to defend herself than allowing herself to be mugged of the coins she had, which were few. But the small, odd little mace, a lump of metal with a dangerously rough surface which spiked up occasionally, she had found, lying on the street, and she had picked it up. It was firm, dangerous, a perfect discreet weapon, and it had helped her out in a few scraps at school before. She gave the mace a fond pat and made sure it was attached firmly to the belt that looped around her simple clothing, a brown long sleeved dress with a full but shabby skirt to keep her warm during the colder months. The one colourful thing about her ensemble, was the green choker necklace she wore, and three copper rings on her right hand, on seperate fingers. Rosaline fidgeted, on the wooden bench, waiting for more people to arrive.

Bartimaeus

He stalked into the waiting room as inconspicuously as he could. "There's too many people again." he thought to himself. being as careful as he could to keep the cool wall in his blind spot he found a corner of the room with only dim light and sparsely populated by the others and lowered himself on the ground. Looking around he noticed some others who seemed more interested in keeping away from others, some that seemed too interested in surrounding themselves with others, and several who he had learned to avoid the hard way.

Reaching into his pouch he pulled out his polish and resins and began to shine and repair his fathers bow back to perfection to pass the time. His only thought being how he regretted forgetting the arrows.
Soon enough though some of the trouble makers began to point his way and laugh. he recognized a couple but some were new faces. immediately taking note of the exits he calmly stared them down with all the malice he could muster.

Putting the bow away he wiggled his ankle in the boot to check that his hunting knife was still concealed there and analyzed the room for other loners he could hide near. soon enough one of the new faces, no older than a first timer came over and began to sneer at him. "Looks like we got us a wierdo here." the kid hissed to Bartimaeus. remaining silent he simply stood up and looked down on the kid. as the kid looked at his friends, more than a bit intimidated by the towering person in front of him he gathered his courage and stood his ground. Glaring at the kid he leaned in and whispered into the kid's ear stating, "If you don't back off you wont even make it to the arena." before calmly putting the polish away and sweeping over to a corner with a blonde, and almost flippant looking male was sitting eyeing things where he noticed people were avoiding.

Keeping his distance (since after all why bother trying to talk) he sat and promptly began to nap lightly being sure to follow his father's advice and keep his ears open for any movement near him. Its what his father had said "In the wilds you can nap but remain true to your ears." and so he waited till he went for his final chance at escaping his life...

Thea entered the waiting room and stopped shortly inside. It was starting to fill up, but she didn't appear to be late; in fact, she wouldn't be surprised if there were a few hours of waiting still ahead. She could wait. She'd been waiting for years. The Dayo von Draco family had a tradition of waiting until the last year before getting their dragons.

And she would get a dragon.

Her attire was formal for the occasion. A black uniform-like outfit that had been tailored to fit her. The Dayo family crest was woven into the left shoulder; it was a silver dragon skull with onyx eyes. Grotesque in a way, but it had great significance with her family's history, and the design had an certain eloquence to it. On her hip hung a broadsword, the hilt of which also was designed with the Dayo family crest, only on this the two eyes were actually black diamonds.

Seating would become scarce soon. Thea made her way to a bench and sat next to a fidgeting girl.

"Nervous?" Thea asked, not one to shy away from conversation.

                              Missaes canta, mistrae lingua

It wasn't as though this was the first time she'd ever traveled alone; she'd sailed between Regium and Kretio a few times and maybe one of those times she'd been almost by herself. More specifically her chaperone was a colleague of her father's, a fellow merchant, it she'd only met him that day so she could have been alone. And she'd certainly ridden to Regium from Gallheim many times with only her younger brothers, which meant that she had been the "responsible adult." And it wasn't exactly like she was alone; she had Argo with her, and she'd known the mare for years.

But watching as her father drifted farther and farther away while the ship took her and her horse away from an island she called home - for all the stories she knew of it - she felt her chest tighten in fear. And it wasn't the water getting deeper beneath the ship, nor even the prospect of having to stand in front of who knew how many people to find out whether or not she was "chosen." It was days still left of her journey that would have to be made by herself.

Her father had originally planned to come with her to Clover, but the trades were not right for it and there were bargains amok in Kretio - in the other direction. Family was family but good business was good business. She spent as much time as she could trying to entertain Argo, who did not appreciate the small stall in the hold, or trying to tell herself that she wouldn't end up like Finnic, severed and hiding from the world. The odds, she was sure, were in favour of not being chosen. She was a nobody, no noble, no heir, just an average country girl from the south.

Arriving in Clover, she let Argo stretch her legs on the long ride to Everfield. From there, she could either take another ship straight into the port on North Draconia, or she could ride on to the bridge between the islands. She'd never seen it of course, and was tempted to take the longer trip, but after her first night alone between the South Draconia cities she decided against it. Ciela wasn't sure who had been more nervous about thieves or night crawlers, her or Argo. At least on the ship out of Everfield, though Argo was again placed in a small stall, she actually felt like she could properly rest.

In Port de Draco, Ciela was tempted to sell some of her heavier garments, brought along to keep warm when the winds and chill of the sea pummeled the ship. They were extra weight for the mare, but given the odds that she would be returning home in a few days, she did her best to roll everything up snugly in her saddlebags - so as not to tempt pickpockets and urchins. She kept her cloak out, in the event of rain, and her endless scarf just in case of chill; her jerkin wasn't exactly designed for warmth.

Finally, and uneventfully, she made it Draconia City and found a stable not too far from the sand arena where the egg choosing was to take place. The keeper of the stable said that as she was to enter the sands, her horse could stay free for the day, but she had to be on her way once the ceremony was over or she would have to pay. She left enough money to convince him to hold a room for her, just in case. After all, when she wasn't chosen, she didn't want to have to start the trek home right away; Argo deserved a rest. Leaving everything with her saddle but what she wore; her shirt and jerkin, leggings and boots, and a staff to deter any troublemakers, Ciela entered the hall to find she was one of the last to arrive. Glancing around, she wondered how many of them had traveled from so far away to be here, and if they too had done so alone.

Comfortable in the mere fact that being here, for her, was an achievement, she stood in the middle of the room, not bothering to try to find a seat along the wall. She had been sitting for long enough these past few days; standing was a welcome reprieve.

Rosaline watched the small clusters of people trickle into the waiting room, ocasionally poking at the bruise on her cheek testingly. It was a mild surprise when someone dressed formally in a uniform type outfit sat next to her and attempted to strike up conversation, especially as the skull she wore for her crest was embedded with diamonds. The well off weren't normally one's to approach the poor, especially a peasant with a rusty sword, a lump of metal and had a purple bruise on her cheek. She mulled over if it was worth talking to the girl, as she shifted in her seat, not really being in the mood for conversation due to her impatience, but satisfied herself with a half true, "No." It's the same every year after all, why would I be?, but the hope, the tantalising possibility of getting a dragon, betrayed that thought as soon as it ran across her mind. Rosaline looked to the door for which they were waiting to open. Hurry up already.

Thea had the impression that she was intruding, and so did not continue. The girl did have a nasty looking bruise on her cheek; who knew what kind of morning she was having. There was an awkward silence for a moment, disturbed only by the noise of other conversations all muffled together. If Thea concentrated on the movement of someone's mouth, she could almost hear what they were saying, and so preoccupied herself this way to pass the time.

heart the Princess heart

The doors open wide, and two large guards enter the room. In between them, dressed in quality leather pants and a flowy silk tunic, zinched around the waist with a gold-embossed belt in the shape of two dragons' heads, walks the tiny Princess. Most eyes turn toward her, though she hardly reaches to the shoulder of most other sixteen-year-olds in the room. Even so, she holds her head high and walks calmly and with purpose.

Her exterior is calm, collected, regal. But on the inside, her heart is racing. So many people around her. No, not people - her citizens. The guards parted the crowd for her, and led her to a seat reserved for her. She glanced at the guards, and at the other kids around her, and inficated for the guards to fall back. It didn't seem right for them to be overbearing, when all around them people were watching.

She was here to prove that she was just like any of them, after all. Her father had wanted a private ceremony for her, for her safety. Evelyn had insisted on being here with everyone else. How was she supposed to rule one day, if no one thought of her as a person? If she couldn't relate to her people?

Still, being in a room with this many of her peers, it made her nervous. It made her feel different. But she was not one to give in to nerves, and she was a future queen. So instead of sitting quietly, she decided to stand, and walked closer to the crowd again. She spoke softly to people as she walked by them, smiling and offering words of encouragement.

The guards watched her every move, but thankfully they stayed back. Evelyn continued speaking gently to the more nervous people, and then she came to the bench where Rosaline and Thea were sitting. Her eyes lingered on Rosaline's bruise.

"Hello," she smiled gently to Rosaline. "I hope your choosing goes well."

She turned to Thea, recognizing the crest on her shoulder. "And you too, Thea of the Dayo family, no?"

                                Taim Carver

                          ¤ Nervous ¤ Waiting room ¤ Alone ¤

Things stirred up as more and more people came in. Tension was becoming high as some of the ring leaders spotted a newcomer with a bow. The kid was a bit odd looking but that was hardly his fault now was it. Nor something he could do anything about. Yet kids where cruel to each other specially when they where all nervous. In here the was still a pecking order but on the sand it was the dragons that ruled who was chosen or not. The kid joined his bench side. Well he was welcome to do so. Taim liked the odd and outsiders. They seemed to get him and he could be natural with them and forced to put up a play. Maybe his corner also provided the kid with some peace and quiet. As a capital kid Taim was relaxed among people and people relaxed whit him. Familiar faces perhaps or something. Well his big brother had never been nice to those picking on him so that probably kept the troublemakers to give him space.

His eyes glanced over his seating partner, seemed like a decent person who kept to himself. Would look hilarious on a pink dragon. Yes, in this case that would be most amusing. The lad closed his eyes and seemed to taking a rest, very calm for such an opportunity. Looked to be at his own age but maybe was younger and had more chances, didn't care or done it before. The reasons were too many to count in the head. The more he would toss the idea around the more reason he came up with. Well his ideas was cut short, by a pretty girl who sat next to a red head. Well both where pretty but this other looked in a other league. Something about her that stood out. After a short moment it was the outfit. The craftsmanship spoke for itself. This was someone with means and power.
User Image
Hadn't he seen that red head before? It was bloody hard to recognize people from town without their faces. Or school for that matter. Here there was so many new people and old faces mixed together. This is the capital and as such it was the biggest city. Only one close enough was Port de Draco and that one was very close. Well he kept eyeing the new comers but was taken when a short girl that he knew who she was. He'd seen her before. In parades and on paintings. It was the crown princess herself. That was surprising. As the sole child of the Royal family it is odd they would let her in the common crowd. Well she wasn't alone, there where some very impressive looking guards form the royal guard. Most likely Dragon fighters, so they could probably take down this entire room without breaking a sweat.

"Hey, buddy" Taim bumped his seat partner gently. How odd and outsider one may be, to see the royals this close and somewhat personal is a unique thing. It seemed to have calmed down and silenced the room. Well not all loved the royals but who could dislike someone so nice looking. It was clear by her act that she wasn't new to this. Since it had quieted down he could hear her words. Dayo family, took him a second to think. Aren't that another big family. Seemed as if he was right. Well if the royals knew your family crest it wasn't a common house name now was it. "That ain't something you see everyday, I'm Taim by the way"

Bartimaeus

Cracking open one eye and staring at the person who just nudged him Bartimaeus curtly nods before inspecting the newcomer and the royal guards accompanying her. Turning to his new company he begins speaking in a mid pitch, almost whispered as though the sound of his voice was foreign, "True enough." Pulling his hood lower in the hopes that his eye wasn't noticed by this strange person he quietly observes the royal arrival. He interacted with the royal indirectly more often than he cared to admit. While hunters weren't in short supply during the feasts he often had emissaries knocking on his door if they needed a few extra bucks or boars. Not that he minded the hunt or the pocket money it brought he just wished they'd act a bit less self righteous about how it was 'his duty' and whatnot. Still this new face didn't seem like a bad sort. She carried herself a bit high for his liking but if she was fielded with the rest it might even out. Turning back to Taim while keeping his left eye concealed he extended his weathered and calloused hand stating simply "Bartimaeus."

"Indeed," Thea said, standing to give the princess the proper respect, "and may your choosing go well also, Princess Evelyn."

She was somewhat surprised that the princess would choose to be here, instead of a private ceremony, but Thea had not gotten an invite to any such event, so she supposed it all made sense. If a private ceremony was taking place, Thea would have been invited, certainly.

Rosaline looked up along with the others to see someone she recognised instantly; the princess, with her guards and pretty outfit. Hopefully this means the ceremony will start soon, they wouldn't want to keep royalty waiting, of course, brown red eyes looked hopefully towards the door to the ceremony room, but to her disappointment they remained closed. With a sigh, she found herself wishing to no avail that the doors would just open already. I know what's coming, so let's get it over and done with, she idly began to tap her foot gently onto the floor. She felt eyes glancing in her direction, but that was probably because of her bruise, which she confirmed was still sore and was now slowly swelling as she felt it gently with her fingertips. Apparently it was bigger at least as to her surprise the princess stopped by her, and wished her luck. Although she wished the lady wouldn't pity her, she offered a small appreciative; "Thank you." and returned to gazing at the ceremonial room's door, unable but to feel impatient.

The princess then moved on to the girl sitting next to her, the one with silky black hair and a distinctive outfit. Rosaline shifted her gaze to the people sitting opposite her; a man about her age with blonde hair and blue eyes, who wore a calm expression, and another one who also sat quietly, a menacing looking sword at his disposal should he need it. At the sight of it, she felt a pang, and looked down at her stolen rusty sword. It would be nice to have a good blade, she admitted inwardly, but her current sword did the job when she needed it, as did her lump of a mace. Even when she had little to give, people would still try to take what they could, even if it was just a few coins and these two shabby weapons, they didn't look pretty but they made sure she had money to take home. It was the same with her clothing too. Noticing that the girl had stood up next to her upon being spoken to by the royal in the room, Evelyn, she winced; was she supposed to do that too? She may have once been a rich girl but most of the habits a rich girl had had fallen away from her over the years. Survival had taken priority over manners long ago, when she had learnt to work hard and earn money, spare fabric and food when she could. I wonder if a royal life is easy, Rosaline wondered idly, or if money is just as meaningless in a castle as well.

heart The Princess heart

Evelyn smiled at Thea, nodding her head in respect. She nodded to Rosaline as well, and turned as she noticed her guards motioning for her. Calmly she walked back to them, on a raised platform that held the doors to the dragon chambers.

When she reached the platform, she turned to face the crowd, taking in their faces; some nervous, some impatient, and some who looked like they were not happy to be here at all. All these youths, she thought. Some from the streets, from the lower classes, trying to get a leg up in the world. That was what was amazing with the Dragons, they didn't care about class or money. It was all about the spirit. It was all about the connection.

Suddenly she felt almost nauseous with nerves. What if she didn't get a dragon? What if she had- no, she couldn't bear to finish that thought. Of course she would get a dragon. A majestic creature, a powerful ally and a life long friend. Every ruling monarch since the start of her line had had dragons. Her father had a majestic black dragon, named Rex Carolus. When she was little she had always called the black beast Carly, and in a way he had been as much of a protective parent as her father.

Her mother had had a blue dragon, Rayja, who died when Evelyn was just a few months. Dragons seldom lived longer then their riders.

A blue dragon, like her mother's. That was what she hoped for. Or a fast, sleek yellow. She didn't want one of the big dragons, since she was so small herself. But a blue dragon. Like her mother. Like a Queen.

She faced the crowd again and took a step forward, clearing her throat so she could speak to the whole room.

"Blessings upon you all, brothers and sisters. No matter where you come from, or who you are, the Dragons chose wisely, indiscriminately. So no matter who you are, today we are all sisters and brothers. Today will decide our futures. Today, we are chosen. Tomorrow, we are bonded. May you walk with dragons."

As he follwed the princess he locked eyes witht he red head and he almost went to smack his forhead. It wasn't just someone he knew the face of. It was Rosaline, next to the princess. Wow, that was just. A big smile came upon his lips, it didn't mattered if she would hit him later. Heck, he almost laughed. Sure, he knew that she once was a part of the rich and wealthy but had fallen. Time had passed and she had made her place among the common people, a fighter with one hell of a hook. Now she sat there smilign up to the princess, it looked so awkward and out of character for her. Hadn't she given up in this? Last week she hadn't seemed to interested in talking about it so he had just thought she wouldn't come this year. Well it was all well for Taims amusing that she came. Still with the smile upon the lips, he gave her a quick wave before turning back to Bartimaeus.

"Well nice to meet you, Bartimaeus. Looks like things is ready to move on." He nodded towards the princess who walked up to the entrance doors. May you walk with dragons." Well that was some common words from the high and mighty. Those words, may you walk with dragons. They where written here and there. Said at some important days and festivals.
