Testing was one of the few things that Ahm had to do at Amityville to 'catch up' that he didn't mind so much (studying for said tests was a whole other kettle of Floresces!) - he had always done well with them, even if he didn't know the material as well as he should. The patterns on standardized tests stood out like sore thumbs to him, especially in certain subjects, and others...he had excellent deductive reasoning that he applied. So they weren't horrible - even 'applied' testing he was good with. Jack help him when the tests fought back though!

Of course, it wasn't his fault the testing booklets had all up and decided to strike! Or that the answer sheets they were supposed to use had turned their ink from black to white in protest! Well, not entirely his fault, at least.

Which was why, hours before he was slated to be done, he was headed back to the Monster dorms and his room.

Ahm was about to fit his key into the door when he caught the sharp smell of blood over a more familiar pair of scents. 'What in Jack's name..' Nahm and Merry...and blood. He knocked sharply in the way the twins had devised to say 'it's me' without words and waited - if Nahm were hurt...he and Merry would need time to cover him up before he could come in...and if Merry were hurt...Nahm would need time to think to cover up properly.

He wanted to call through the door, find out what was going on -- but he didn't want to alert anyone else. This was Grue business - be it Merry or Nahm or something/someone else entirely - and so Ahm restrained himself until he got an 'all clear' to enter, lashing tail and narrowed, glowing eyes the only outward sign that the Grue was anything but patiently inspecting his gloves.

Nahm tilted his head a little to examine the shorts. They weren't going to be salvageable anyway, soaked with blood and badly torn. "Right, going to do this the easy way," he said, and produced a folding knife from one of the hidden pockets in his shirt. He flipped it open, turned it carefully so that the blunt edge was toward Merry, and sliced the shorts off with two quick sweeps. The knife was flipped closed and slipped back into his pocket just as quickly, and he slipped an arm around her to help support her.

His ear flicked back at the rapping at the door, and he blinked. Ahm was back, and much earlier than expected. His brother would have smelled the blood, and was being careful. He flipped his hood up and moved a little so that he stood in front of Merry, shielding her from view from the hallway. Not that modesty was an issue with either of the grues, but if someone happened to pass by at the wrong moment, that was different, and particularly when she was injured. "'M decent," he called, keeping his voice pitched low; this, too, was a signal - acknowledged, not an emergency, safe to come in.

The sound of the knife flicking open made the ghoul freeze, and widened eyes tracked the movement of his hand as he sliced the shorts away. Of course she trusted him, Nahm would never hurt her, but just that moment she wasn't all that fond of knives, even if this one was smaller than the one wielded by the hunter. The shorts were ruined, cutting them away was a lot quicker, a lot less trouble, than trying to slid them down, so there wasn't so much a peep of protest throughout. It left her standing there very nearly nude. Only the soft cotton of baby blue panties protecting her modesty, and there were spots of blood even there, along the lacy top that circled along her left hip.

She hadn't felt chilled before, but Nahm's arm as it looped around her was warm, and she leaned in against him, bumping her temple against his cheek before the rap at the door had both looking up towards it. Perked, her ears twitched forward, and she'd draw a deep breath to scent the air before the familiar scent of the other twin made it through the heavier scent of blood that was lingering in the room.

It was likely she would have spoken up, called him in, but Nahm moving to shield her from the door made her pause, expression curious, before he was answering his brother's questioning knock. An answering sound escaped the injured ghoul's throat, soft and impatient, as she stared at the door over Nahm's shoulder, fingers curling tightly into the fabric of his robe.

Nahm's voice carried through the shut door - 'M decent' - and Ahm felt the tension in his spine relax some. Whatever had happened was non-critical, which was good; the elder Grue slipped into the room quickly, locking the door behind him even as he pushed his hood back. Inside, the scent of blood was that much sharper, but not overwhelming - thankfully.

His twin was shielding Merry, who seemed to be wearing very little and there was a small pile of bloody cloth at her feet - so she was the injured party. Ahm's tail lashed angrily at the thought of someone (or something) causing their beautiful ghoul pain like that, but he was careful and cautious from years of hiding injuries and actions with his twin.

"Tests decided they didn't want to cooperate...everyone was sent home. Apparently someone mentioned that this would be the last time they were used before being shredded...and they didn't like it. Even the answer sheets got in on it." Ahm raised a brow at Nahm, head cocked slightly towards the pretty chimera in his arms - no matter what he was saying, he was far more interested in what was going on with Merry.

Ahm moved closer, bag dropping to the floor carelessly, expression tender and full of concern. "What happened, sweet ghoul? Who hurt you?"

A flickering glowing look to Merry's inquiring expression, but Nahm didn't explain specifically; she had been around the twins long enough now to know that they often spoke to each other in fragments, practiced and coded interactions arranged long ago or a few words to direct the other's thoughts down the same pathway. They were two creeple, two bodies and two minds, but they had been born from a single pumpkin and remained two halves of a whole. Merry had already begun to learn some of the cryptic pieces of the way they spoke, would undoubtedly learn more of it.

Nahm snorted quietly at the explanation about the tests. Figured. He eased back toward the now-clean bed, encouraging Merry gently to return to resting and ignoring the bloody fabric on the floor, the remains of the shorts and the stained blanket. He'd dispose of it later, or Ahm would. "Haunted House," he explained briefly, but left the rest of it up to Merry. He hadn't been there, and accuracy in this account would be important.

Merry watched Ahm as he locked the door and pushed his hood down, and had it been any other day she'd have hurried over to greet him with a kiss and a nuzzle, but Nahm's arm was still looped around her. She waited, listening to the elder explain about the testing being disrupted, the softest of chirps issuing before she was being eased back gently onto the bed.

That hurt, of course, and she grit her teeth in a wince, fingers digging into Nahm's robe, or even the grue's arm beneath the heavy layers of fabric. Grip tight until she was laying down again, long legs drawn up, and head resting on the pillow. A pale tail came around to loop around his waist, replacing the hand that came up to reach to Ahm.

"There was fog. It came out of nowhere and then suddenly I was in the house, though I didn't know it." Having never been there before. Only now, after the fact, she knew it for what it was. "I ran into a hunter. I didn't know what he was, I thought he was a reaper, but he attacked me." He also hadn't smelled right. No two scents were exactly the same, but this hunter had been different. Something was missing, or there was something there that didn't belong. It was hard to put her finger on, but she knew it was off.

"He was too strong. He slashed at my chest, and he, ah." Ears dipped as her gaze flicked down to her stomach. "Stabbed me, and he meant to kill me. He hated me." This had pale features pinching in distress. Never before had she meant another being that simply hated her on sight. It was disconcerting, and certainly it wouldn't bother her half as much if there hadn't been murderous intent along with that hatred.

"Hmm." A Haunted House? Why did that sound like something he should know - and if so, why did he not? Nahm was settling Merry into his bed carefully and Ahm quietly picked up the bloodied mess and dumped it into their closet temporarily before getting a chilled beverage from the fridge and returning to Nahm's bedside.

He set the drink down and took Merry's grasping hand in his own, stroking the offered hand soothingly while she spoke of her torment once more. Ahm didn't press, letting her tell it in her own time and knowing that she was raw and needed gentle handling - deserved nothing less, in fact! "Don't be afraid, beautiful, we've got you now. That hunter's corrvidus-bait for what he's done, I swear it."

A 'Haunted House' that utilized what might be inter-dimensional travel and a murderous hunter. Looking at how distressed and wounded Merry was, Ahm knew he would be doing research into the Haunted House, the fog and hunters. No-one hurt their Merry-ghoul and got away with it - that's what the pins meant, that's what the scarf meant - and a glance towards Nahm let the elder Grue know the thought was a shared one.

With great care, Ahm smoothed Merry's hair back and leaned in to kiss her forehead gently, "Could you describe him for me sometime? Not now - you need to rest and recover." Without disturbing the bed - or the ghoul in it - he snagged the drink he'd brought out and offered it to Merry. "Drink this." The Jacking b*****d would pay for every drop of Merry's blood spilt, for every tear and whimper...just as so many others had paid, over the years, for slighting the twins. Research and planning on his end, then the execution of the solidified Plan with Nahm at the head and Ahm playing back-up.

"We'll take care of it," Nahm agreed, unusually somber. Now that Ahm had a focus and a starting point, a Plan would be put together as soon as there was enough base information to formulate something they could expect to be reasonably effective. They'd finish this together.

Nahm padded over to Ahm's bed as his twin attended to Merry and gathered up the top blanket; nothing too heavy to weigh down fresh injuries, but enough to keep a healing body warm. He brought it back and spread it over the bed, drawing it gently up over the chimera. "We gotcha," he said. "You're safe."

With the both of them she did feel safe, cared for, and she settled a little less tensely against the bedding as Ahm bent to lay a tender kiss against her brow. It pulled a small sound from the ghoul, almost a chirp, as the elder grue put a bottle in her hands and told her to drink. Obediently she brought it up to her lips, sipping at whatever might have been inside.

It was held back up for Ahm and Nahm returned to the bed with clean blankets and spread them over her. Blankets light and soft, enough to catch and trap the warmth, but not heavy enough to irritate her injuries. The perfect thing, really, for the chimera ghoul. Her kind bundled down when they were sick or hurt, sleeping away the worst of it, basking in the heat of the tribe cuddled around them, members coming and going as needed. A close knit community.

Merry had the warmth of the bed, but she was missing the comfort of close bodies. Fingers wrapped around Ahm's wrist, tugging on him softly. Her tail snaked around Nahm's thigh, and she looked to him as well, reaching for a layer of his robes.

The drink was light and with a flavor that landed somewhere between bitter and sweet, herbal and with a hint of smoke - it was good for hydrating, which was important when wounded or sick (or just thirsty). Ahm rather liked the stuff, so they kept some on hand most of the time. "Perfectly safe with us, beautiful."

Ahm set the bottle aside and would have stepped away to start checking into things but for the ghoul's fingers around his wrist, urging him to settle with her. He smiled and cut his gaze to his twin briefly before sinking onto the bed carefully. If Merry wanted to snuggle up with the twins, who were they to argue?

"Easy now..." The elder Grue settled himself against the headboard and then carefully helped to rearrange Merry against him comfortably, leaving plenty of room for Nahm to join. What Merry wanted, Merry was going to get...and if she wanted the twins to lay with her, she'd get them.

Nahm was less fond of the drink, but appreciated its qualities and his twin's taste, made sure to watch their supply and restock. Practical things, concrete things: his own flavor of affection and care. Merry's tail slipped around his leg, and he sighed a sigh that could have been exasperated if it were not fond, and slid onto the bed, careful not to let his weight shake the mattress too much. He arranged himself behind the chimera, twining his tail with hers and providing a warm cushion to lean back against. They would guard her, and she would heal. Time enough later to begin plotting.

It was an odd tasting beverage, one Merry wasn't quite sure she liked, but if Ahm offered the bottle back to her she'd drink it, obedient. If he thought it would help, she believed him, trusted him. Even if the flavor left an odd aftertaste on the back of her tongue.

Really though, that was the least of her worries. Her chest was a dull ache, her stomach an even deeper sort of pain. No longer sharp, but grating, every breath slow and careful. She pressed her lips together as first one, then the other twin crawled into the bed with her, biting back pain sounds, swallowing them back. They weren't trying to hurt her, and she wanted them close, a little pain wasn't a hard price to pay, not as the both settled in around her.

It was so warm. Already her temperature was rising, that almost fevered spike that meant her body was healing. The blanket caught that heat and surrounded her with her, and the twin's added to it. She twined her tail with Nahms, shifted carefully against his chest, and finally pulled in a deep breath to let out in a tired sigh. The adrenaline was gone, the pain was endurable, and the ghoul was exhausted. As her eyes started to drift closed she was sliding fingertips along the backs of Ahm's knuckles, lacing her fingers with his.

If they wanted to plot it wouldn't disturb the ghoul. She didn't bother to fight the tiredness rolling over her, but let it carry her away into blissful oblivion. Tucked safely, comfortably, between her boils, went willingly, falling into a deep sleep that would be damn near impossible to wake her from for hours to come.
