On The Board:Basics of TransfigurationWhat is Transfiguration?Transfiguration is, at it's most basic, transforming one object into another. This is usually accomplished by magical means. However, it is not simply changing something's appearance into something else's, it is actually changing the very item into the its intended target. This very act changes its structure even down to the molecular level, so that when you transfigure a bird into a cup, you are taking that bird and turning it into a cup on an atomic level. What kinds of Transfiguration are there? There are actually four different branches of Transfiguration: Transformation, Vanishment, Conjuration, and Untransfiguration. All four of these branches of transfiguration you work with if you wish to master this branch of magic, but you may not see all four during your course of study at Hogwarts. What is Transformation?Transformation is at its core turning one object into another. This is the most basic form of transfiguration. There are three different subcategories of transformation known as Human Transfiguration, Switching, and Trans-Species. Human transfiguration however is the most difficult form of Transformation. What is Vanishment?Vanishment is the act of taking an object and willing it out of existence. The Vanished item will simply cease to be, and instead you will have nothing. As such, this is the most difficult form of transfiguration you will probably encounter on your OWLs. What is Conjuration?Conjuration is the act of bringing things into existence. This is much harder to do than simply willing something to appear. This area of Transfiguration you will learn about in your NEWT-level class should you get that far. What is Untransfiguration?Untransfiguration is the act of reversing a transfiguration. The branch is considered both Transfiguration as well as a counter-spell. This branch is generally the very first one encountered when you are learning the subject of Transfiguration

Rick leaned against the desk as he waited for students to file in. He vaguely wondered sometimes if he ever looked as small as the first years in this class, but dismissed this idea and instead decided to focus instead on the class at hand. When the students all filed into the classroom, he checked the time and closed the door with a flick of his wand before turning to address the first years. "Hello, and welcome to Transfiguration. I'm your professor Richard Drage. For those of you wondering if there is going to be some form of spellcasting right off the bat in this class, that would be a yes, and a no. Yes, because you will be casting spells in this lesson, and no, since there will only be one spell you will learn today. However, this spell is probably the most important one you will learn in your entire study of the subject, so that would be why it is the very first one you learn about today."
He turned to the board and gestured to it, already well aware of the brief overview written upon it. "Transfiguration, by its very nature, is one of the most, if not the most, difficult disciplines of magic there is. We are taking an object and changing it fundamentally at the molecular level. This in itself makes the practice at once dangerous as well as complex, however is probably one of the very rewarding branches of magic there is in my opinion. After all, you can look at something you've transfigured and know that you've managed to succeed or fail, and by itself is a very rewarding feeling." He then turned back to the board and wrote something underneath his notes and pointed it out for people to see.
"This, by the way, is one of the reasons why transfiguration is so difficult. Yes, it is a mathematical equation, one that is applied every time you try and cast a transfiguration spell. Can anyone enlighten me as to why that is?" He crossed his arms and waited, taking a deep breath and hoping he hadn't confused the heck out of the first years yet. It would be his luck, wouldn't it? To be the first professor in Hogwarts history to basically make a mess of his first lesson and the students learned nothing? He hoped not.

Oh, I know, I can feel the shifting in my bones... Enclosed are the senses so unknown. I've been changing, falling, fading- There's demons at the door patiently waiting. But I wasn't composed of broken bones or demon limbs; So please watch over me and be the light to carry me. This change is all so permanent. 𝓉𝒾𝑒𝓇𝓃𝒶𝓃 𝒽𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑒𝓉 𝓎𝒶𝓍𝓁𝑒𝓎 FIRST YEAR │ PUREBLOOD │ RAVENCLAW
This was a class Tiernan had been looking forward to, although she was a little antsy, with it being this late in the afternoon. Luckily, it had been her only class of the day besides the nausea-inducing Flying this morning, and she could do whatever she liked after this. The professor could not have been any older than his early thirties, but to her disappointment, he did not look like the romantic heroes of the books she was so fond of. She carefully took notes, and then her hand popped up. "Either weight or wand power times.... concentration? over..." Tiernan gave a helpless sort of little shrug. "Volume times aggression? Times... zenith?" She didn't feel embarrassed in the slightest; even if she wasn't the teeniest bit correct, she'd know the answer by the end of class anyways. Can't you see the change in me? There's no placement, no arrangement- Of words that I could say to keep these changes away. This world is a masterpiece... A canvas sheet accountable for such losses. Shout out to the artist who took his heart and his soul, And lost them both in the process.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Along with Potions, Transfiguration seemed like the most complex subjects that Rey would be taking this year and she couldn't help but feel excited. It was the closest subject to science and she was excited to start.
When the Professor introduced himself and the subject, Rey began to feel a bit nervous but she was sure she could get through it. After copying down the equation written on the board and examining it, she could feel her confidence levels increasing, she knew this equation! She had read the textbooks soon after buying them and now she was grateful for that. Raising her hand, she waited to be recognised before speaking. "It is the equation required for a transfiguration. It is basically the wand power multiplied by it's concentration and the incantation divided by the weight of the castor and their viciousness or strength of intent. They each affect the final transformation and if all of the requirements are met, then the transfiguration is successful." Rey flushed when she realised she had basically recited the textbook but she couldn't help it! Despite that, she still felt a small curl of pride that wasn't overwhelmed by the embarrassment.

Glynn was excited for Transfiguration, but then again, he was excited about most of his classes. He hurried along, and when he stepped into the classroom, he looked all over before his eyes alighted on the board. Okay, so notes already. He found a seat next to Rey, giving her a quiet nod and got out his quill and parchment, already ready to take notes. He scrawled them out, and then frowned as he listened to the professor. Huh, no wonder his grandfather said that this was going to be a tricky subject. He studied the equation on the board, frowning even more, when first Tiernan and then Rey answered the professor's question. Blinking, he settled back and looked over to the board, already figuring out which one meant as he recited what Rey had said in his mind. Okay cool, so that was the formula? Good to know.

Saio Mio Ukida First Year Hufflepuff Adopted ☼ Half-blood Location : Transfiguration - Thursday @ 2:00pm
Saio had not enjoyed her first class of the day. Hoping for a better afternoon, she walked into Transfigurations with a small amount of optimism. Taking a seat her first impression of Professor Drage was that he was young. Turning her attention to the board she noted the list of terms. With her quill in hand and parchment in front of her, the Hufflepuff started writing them down. Listening to Professor Drage she hoped the class wouldn’t be too hard. It was beginning to sound like such.
When he showed them the formula, Saio wasn’t sure if she liked it. Formulas usually made things more complicated. Pushing that very thought aside, Saio wrote out the formula and its meaning. Staring at the translation she still didn’t get it. How could they control half those things…?

Kazu entered the classroom and looked around. So far, he only recognized one person, and that was Saio from his house. He decided to make his way over, taking a seat and looking over with a small wave. "Um, hi." He watched the professor make his speech and took notes with supplies he took out of his bag, and then looked over at the other students answering questions. It looked a lot more complicated than it probably was, but that was half the challenge, right? Nodding to himself, he noted down the replies and waited for the professor to reply.

Saio had been sitting quietly waiting for class to begin when Kazuki, a fellow Hufflepuff came over. Giving him a small smile and a small wave back to him, she figured it wouldn’t hurt to be social. “Hello, Kazuki.” She greeted brightly before Professor Drage got the ball rolling. She sat there taking notes before looking over at her fellow housemate. “I’m not sure about this class… are you…?” She asked curiously. Might as well ask while she wasn’t breaking any rules, right? Besides maybe hearing someone else’s thoughts while they were taking notes would help. That way she wouldn’t worry so much about formulas and other terrible things.

Gavin swept through the threshold of the classroom and took a seat in one of the desks right behind Reyna and Glynn. Just like yesterday in Defense Against the Dark Arts, the young Ravenclaw began the day by retrieving his Transfiguration's textbook, an empty notebook, and self-inking quill. He outlined a header on the first blank page of his notes, included an index on the next page, then copied the rules listed on one of the classroom walls. When he began his first entry, he titled it “Basics of Transfiguration” and neatly transferred the notes on the board along with the equation outlined. He knew the equation well, despite never having been allowed to perform the spell before. His mother was stern in that regard, no laws would be broken, not her laws or the ministry's. And even though he wouldn't have gotten in trouble for trying underage magic; his mother still wouldn't allow it. Not even when his little sister tried to defend him by helping to sway their opinion. It never worked. And Ophelia always get her way. Always. It wasn't fair, he thought. He could have been halfway done with the textbook by now, but he has to sit here and work at the same slow pace as everyone else. Gavin wanted nothing more than to skip a few chapters ahead and start learning how to transform and untransfigure. For now, he ripped off a scrap piece of parchment from a fresh roll and began to sketch the outline of a blue winged fairy.

Kazu looked over from where he was taking notes and considered the question. "Well, it can't be any harder than some other classes right? I'm not that sure about Potions yet." Which was true. The class seemed a lot more difficult for him, mostly because he'd never dealt with that sort of thing before. Partially he blamed his aunt, who never let him into the kitchen, but she defended it from anyone with a well-placed spatula and some sharp words. He just learned really quickly to stay out of the way when she was in kitchen-mode. Potions seemed a lot like cooking to him with the brewing bits.

It's not like it was his fault he did not know the formula, it was clearly made with people who were raised by magic in mind. If he knew that what that v was for viciousness instead of volume like he'd assumed it meant he could have came up with the same answer. At least Rey was doing her part to make up the points that they lost, he was sure next question he'd guess right and they'd make up that 40 points back in no time.

Rick listened as he heard the students give their interpretations of what the equation was, and he shook his head ruefully at one before he heard another, a Slytherin give the equation in her own words. Well, he wasn't going to dispute how the girl remembered it, since it was pretty close to the equation itself. "Very good. Ten points to Slytherin, though you weren't exactly right. However, since you remembered what you ddi, that shows you read ahead for the class. Good work."
He decided to write out the variables completely on the board, to better illustrate his point. "When you are doing any spell in transfiguration, whether it be transfiguring a needle into a matchstick or, one of the most advanced forms of transfiguration to date, becoming an animagus, you have to keep this formula in mind. You have the incantation itself and how you say it, Z, times your wandpower W multiplied by your concentration C, over the viciousness or your will V and your bodyweight A to get the desired result, T. All of these factors need to be present to successfully transfigure something, and you have to find the correct balance to accomplish this. Every transfiguration is going to require a mixture of these factors in just the right amount to accomplish your intended target. Any of these off in any way will result in the spell failing, and the object or creature you're casting it upon being stuck halfway between the two forms." He pointed to the board to look over the class, waiting for them to copy down the notes he just provided.
"Thankfully there is a spell to reverse said transfigurations when they happen to be stuck. This is the spell that you are going to be working on today. This spell can reverse most simple transfiguration mistakes, and is extremely useful for beginner witches and wizards. This spell is called Reparifarge." He quickly wrote out all of the information necessary on the board and then turned to the rest of the class.
Professor Drage Reparifarge (re-par-ee-far-je) t= Fixes Transfiguration mistakes a= caster must be heavier than the object v= intent must be at least medium-mild w= any wand power c= moderate Z= well-spoken, as clear as possible
"Now, I am going to pass out items that have been transfigured halfway for you to work on. Don't worry about any of the creatures left in the state they are currently in, since I can turn them back into what they were originally. What I want you to do is try and untransfigure these items for practice. I will be walking around the classroom to observe your progress and give assistance where needed. When I get to you, please state your name and house, so that way I can start connecting faces with names." Rick then proceeded to walk toward the cupboard to retrieve a box. He then started passing around items that the students could work on for their first spell attempts.
════════════════════════Location: Transfiguration Class Thinking: Here's to first impressions being good... OOC: Students, please be aware that the items being passed around are any of those listed under the first year Transfiguration List of Knowledge. That can be found in the first post of the thread.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rey couldn't help but beam when Professor Drage awarded her ten points; she was right (well, mostly according to him but close enough)! Listening to him speak, she took down the new notes quickly and waited a bit for him to come to her, pronouncing the spell quietly to herself. She couldn't wait to start but seeing the grotesque items her classmates received, her stomach turned. Those poor creatures, she thought, horrified.
"Reyna Whyte, sir, Slytherin" she said when the professor reached her and gave her something that looked like a moving, semi-porcelain snail carrying parts of a teacup on it's back. Logically, she knew that magic also involved animals, both her parents warned her about this and she'd read the various spells and transfigurations that they'd be doing this but knowing about it was one thing and seeing the failed results in front of her was another. Rey was sickened but she shook her head determinedly. This wasn't going to stop her; if transfiguration was done properly, it would be virtually painless for the animals and her job now was to undo the damage done to the poor snail.
She muttered the spell under her breath a few times to before raising her wand and saying clearly and resolutely, "Reparifarge." Her wand tip glowed and the teapot shrunk, turning into a shell, and the snail became much more animated. However, it still looked like it was made of porcelain. Disappointed, she analysed her actions, wondering where she went wrong. It can't have been my pronunciation or intent. Concentration? Or maybe wand power? Either way, practice makes perfect, and Rey was determined to get it right eventually.
