prompt pt. 1 ::

Darlene's has always been a bit of an unexpected haven for Meli. She'd never really expected to enjoy being a waitress; you had to cater to the whims of anyone whose table you were assigned to, you weren't allowed to talk back, and biting your tongue was never one of her acquired abilities. Sometimes she would joke that she hadn't classed into that, or that she wasn't wasting points on that kind of ability, but the humor was overshadowed by the frustration dark in her eyes.

It was that frustration that had her bursting out of the back door of the bar into the early evening air, a frustrated scream issuing forth so fast it sounded strangled. She enjoyed her job, she reminded herself. She adored Nasir, and Borr, and being around them made her a better person on most days. Yet when people had children that were allowed to fling food and make messes and they didn't even attempt to rein them in?! Then blamed her for the level of mess?!

No. Nooooooooooo.

Leaning against the wall her head thudded back against the building, looking up towards the sky, which was when she noticed the bird. Under the glare of a streetlight it looked like its feathers were violet, head bright blue, and nothing like she'd seen before. Lovely, certainly.

What troubled her was the fact that the bird was noticing her back. Birds, in general, didn't pay much attention to the oversized mammals that were invading their habitats unless you had food. Sure, she was behind Darlene's, but the bird wasn't coming closer or even acting like it was looking for food. It was just...staring. At her.

Frustration dissipated to be replaced by a feeling of unease. Not taking her eyes off that beautiful, easy-to-spot blue spot on a rooftop, the brunette eased herself back inside. She had half of her area to clean before she could go home for the night and maybe Zac would be willing to walk home with her...and Mogget could keep them both safe.

prompt pt. 2 ::

Paranoia was not something that made an intelligent, self-sufficient woman feel good about herself. It was illogical. It was uncontrollable. But, God damn it, that bird was following her. Unless there was suddenly a new species that had erupted into existence in Ashdown (which was possible but not probable) this was a single bird that was always not out of sight. On the roof across from work. On the roof outside of her bedroom window. She'd gone twice into the bookstore to see Zac (and to escape those eyes) but they had all but pressed against the window.

Worse was that they were intelligent eyes. The look was expecting something, waiting for something, infinitely patient in its waiting. Being watched so constantly was making Melina feel as if something was crawling along her skin, as if she had done something, but she didn't know what it was she had done to earn this level of scrutiny.

Of course she didn't tell anyone about it. How would she have explained it? People had noticed that she was off-kilter (more than usual, at least), that something was under her skin, that she felt pressed in at all sides by a single bird with a pair of bright eyes that looked at her as if she were somehow too stupid to figure out what was going on.

The weight of that expectation grew, and grew, never slaking. Never lightening. Eventually something was bound to break and Lina was damned afraid it was going to be her sanity. It was that which had her turning and confronting the bird in the middle of the night, throwing up her bedroom window and flinging out an old take-out container at it. "Go away! Go find someone else to bother! I don't have time for this!!"

the bird hops out of the way of the flung take-out container

it looks at lina

it cocks its head to the side

and then it flies off

[the bird continues to follow lina, but is less obvious about it! this is a "status effect" that will carry across all of lina's threads until the next prompt cycle in one week smile ]
