Later, when all of this was over, Jamie would apologize. Assuming Finn was understanding enough to give him the time of day. It would hurt to lose this relationship they'd been building and this chance at a dream job that meant the world to him. He wouldn't blame him if he went that way, though. How could he? Who the hell wanted to be a snowshoe hare?
Here, in the moment, Jamie wasn't able to lament these things. He wasn't even able to form coherent thoughts beyond threat distracted, get away.
That's what he meant to do, too. Run. His instincts weren't to fight, they were to survive. Bucking his feet into Finn's stomach, Jamie went tumbling awkwardly out of his arms, shoulder colliding with earth. He was a mess of limbs and struggling as he fought to right himself so he could escape.

Jamie's feet connected hard - Finn had already been down, but the kick just reinforced it. He was done trying to chase the were-hare. He was done.
But the change was just getting started.
Finn curled around himself, legs tucked up to his chest as his bones ground against each other, changing shape. He gritted his teeth together and whimpered - some newfound prey instinct not to be too loud. His head was pounding, ears feeling like they might rip free of his skull. And his feet-
His feet-
Finn was seized by a newfound need, one greater than any other, and that was to take his shoes the ******** off.
He struggled with the right one for what felt like forever, while his toes curled and pushed against the leather. He ripped it free, chucked it off into the woods somewhere, and followed quickly with his sock. He followed with the other shoe, driven by pain, the creaking of bones as they changed shape.
"Nnng," groaned Finn, collapsing backwards when the shoe was finally off.
But he felt jittery.
Like he needed to run.
Panting, he struggled to his feet. Where had... where had Jamie gone?

Jamie had watched Finn at first once he'd righted himself, eyes wide and glassy, heart pounding a deafening, erratic beat in his ears. Where later there would be a sense of camaraderie, now there was only an ache in the bones, a leftover feeling of something he couldn't place or even attempt to. It was there but not, because right now it didn't matter. It couldn't.
That was when Jamie bolted, he ran in ernest like an animal, his body a bundle of nerves and fear and s**t he couldn't put into words anymore. For a long time he ran, led by fear in some nondescript direction deeper into the trees. When he woke up after the week was up he'd probably be lost—lost, cold, and starving.
He screamed. It was primal and painful, a scream that sent birds from their nests like it wasn't the middle of the damn night. Somewhere in the forest he collapsed, writhing at the base of an old oak tree.
The Jamie who could think would never wish this on anyone. The Jamie who could think, when he could think, would pray Finn would forgive him for everything.
