There was a time when Illyes would have done the same as Eiran. He would have held onto his feelings for him, for the love, or at least as close to it as he had ever felt before. He would have held on as long as possible, because it was the most wonderful feeling, as far as he was concerned, and the most powerful one, even beyond that of rage or sadness. He would have dug his claws in and gripped it until all else had fallen away.

But it had been stripped from him, just as his time with Eiran had also been taken from him. When Troile had attempted to diablerize the Brujah Disciple, he had been forced to flex the full power of Temporis in aid to himself, and had travelled so far forward in time that he had lost it all. Every shred of humanity or emotion he had left. But worse...worse was who he had lost.

The other vampires words should have stirred something within him. Illyes had wanted them to. Yet, he stood there unblinking and unfeeling. He couldn't even gather enough ire to be frustrated.

"That's...quite the compliment." The Disiciple smiled, for whatever it was worth, which was not much anymore.

A few beats of silence followed, in which Illyes thought about what else he could say., and then he spoke again.

"I am sorry, Eiran. For everything that transpired back then."

There was no hiding the edge of bitterness in Eiran's laugh. He knew, of course. Knew that what had been done to Illyes--what Illyes had done to save himself--had changed him, likely irrevocably. But it was something else, to witness it face to face like this.

"Ah, I suppose," he said, "that it might be a compliment of sorts." But really, who else could possibly hold his interest? Especially after this long?

The apology made his ears twitch back, briefly, and he shook his head.

"The fault doesn't lie with you, Illyes. That damned usurper--" There was, for a moment,a flash of real, genuine anger, in his eyes and in his voice. "If she hadn't turned on you, none of this would have happened. And in the end--I'm just glad you're still here. That she failed. Even if the cost was...quite steep."

Even if Illyes never felt for him what he once did, could never feel fro him what he once did...that was better than Illyes being lost to him for the rest of a long, empty, lonely eternity.

The attempt at a smile had slipped away. All that was left was the blank, smooth mask that was Illyes's face, devoid of emotion. There was no use pretending, even if it had become habit. Eiran knew.

"Know that I do intend to fix it. I did not give up what was lost willingly, and If all the knowledge of the world that I have accumulated will not help me, I promise you I will find another way." He stated this with certainty, and then shook his head minutely.

"As far as I can tell, she is now gone, and those that were once mine are now without any leader at all. But who would want that wretched lot anyways? Odious bunch, and barely a handful of braincells amongst them."

He studied Eiran the entire time he had been speaking. He heard the bitterness in his voice, saw the anger in his eyes, and wondered at what it must be like, to still be able to at least tap into those emotions.

It only made him more determined to get them back.

He knew it was time to leave. He had done what he wanted to do, by finding Eiran and asking him the question that had weighed so heavily on his mind. He had work to do still, more knowledge to delve into, and deals to make, along with a new God that he would soon need to pay a visit.

Still, he hesitated. Somehow, without really feeling anything for him anymore, he was still drawn to Eiran, and still wanted to be near him.

He blinked his eyes, and cast his gaze away, to the side.

"I will go now, but I will find you again. We will build our clan back up from the ruins. Soon. Very soon." He nodded his head as if to himself and then turned to leave.
