Reno would nod along to Sub's story, keeping only vague focus on the island they were approaching as he relied on his Cloyster for any major steering requirements. "And somehow I managed to loop myself into that whole mess for a time. I'd say I'm surprised but based off my luck, I'm more surprised that I didn't end up piloting that submarine and dying in it." Reno said, slowly turning to look over at the hastily dressed guard and the apologetic response. Giving a chuckle, he would once again crack open his badge case to show off his Soul Badge to get the ball rolling.
And rolling it went, the gates once again opening and closing behind the duo as a new question entered the air. "....Which time do you mean? If its for before ending up part of Team Rocket, then I have a much clearer picture of things. Grew up in Goldenrod City out of the orphanage there. Didn't really have much for normal family, so spent most of my time learning from fun folks on the street. So y'know, inevitably started grabbing things I didn't own and somehow managing to get away. Apparently I did that a little too well or something, because thats when I ended up grabbed into Rocket and you should know the rest from there."
Looking down at Tesei, he would give the Cloyster a soft scratch to his head before continuing. "If you mean before Snagem, then I got most of that too. I was never told why we were at Snowpoint Temple, all I know is I got separated, chased around by what I now know was the Ziton, and there are implications there that both terrify and intrigue me but thats beside the point, and I ended up slightly activating some Psychic powers to teleport myself into the ocean. Which is where a little Shellder picked me up, helped me get to shore, and then I....kinda drifted. Mostly because I was an uneducated teen, partly because whatever I did to escape is what resulted in me losing all that memory and inadvertently created Rome."
Staring towards the oncoming gate and the new patch of land that it was sitting on, Reno would reach towards his badge case. "And...yeah, he's still there. I do not question why, mostly because at this point we seem content to operate as...however you want to call this. DID, personification of some traits givne form, whatever. Either way, he has enough autonomy that when he wants, he can have his own experiences. Y'know that whole separate construct I made that Crystal's mind went into? That started as me basically giving Rome a body." Reaching the shoreline, Reno would hop onto shore and point a Pokeball towards his Cloyster. "C'mon, Tesei. Just a little further and then we can start blasting the best of the best."

Sub listened to Reno, his expression nothing unusual and his attention only partly held onto the conversation, that was until he said Tesei's name aloud. He didn't know why it activated that memory in him, he had heard the name Tesei before in relation to the Cloyster, this wasn't new information to him in the slightest. But perhaps it was the reminiscing of Snowpoint Temple and the events that transpired, coupled with the talk of Teleporting, along with pondering how much of Reno's memory he regained that gave the name a new value to Sub.
Giving Reno a strange look for a few seconds after having landed on the shore and jumped off of Valdemar the man decided to just come out with what he was thinking. "...do you remember your Abra? Tesei?" He hesitantly asked Reno, unsure of how he would respond to the question.
The guard several yards away paid them no attention for now.

Reno would look over at Sub with a furrowed brow and a tilted head as he spoke. "What? Kaiden is an Alakazam. I never had..." Reno started, attempting to understand what exactly it was that Sub was saying when a foreign memory blinked to life in his mind. Of him and an Abra, back before he ever met the man named Shades. ".....I did have an Abra...." Reno muttered, slowly taking a seat on the ground as he could already feel a wave of something about to overwhelm him. And as soon as he was stable, he felt the memories come rushing back in. One of those people he learned from on the streets had given him an Abra, saying that the thing was useless for a getaway since all it could do for him was teleport back to the Pokemon Center. All Reno had to do was promise to let it keep its name. Tesei. Easy enough request and it gave him a friend of his own so he agreed to the whole deal.
He never quite got what the guy had been saying about Tesei only being able to teleport to the Pokemon Center. It had taken a little time but Reno was eventually able to get the Psychic type to teleport them both to either locations that he knew well or to places within line of sight. And he quickly put this bit of training into practice, grabbing all kinds of goods and materials for himself to either play around with or for general survival and then teleporting away when he was about to be caught. And for some reason, the whole only going to Pokemon Centers must have been a common thing since his pursuers would quickly pivot to running towards the place the second he disappeared while he simply watched on from places like nearby rooftops or even a small ways behind them. But someone else must have been paying attention to these antics, since members of Team Rocket managed to locate and lock down his teleporting, which is when he got placed into the group alongside the one person who seemed to be able to most easily keep him from teleporting whenever it wasn't needed.
Blinking a few times, Reno would return his eyes to Sub as the waves of memories relented for a moment. "I was this little teleporting thief. Didn't have a lick of sense how much skill it took to have a Psychic type teleport you somewhere that wasn't a few preset locations, but Team Rocket did. And then I got drafted into it and placed alongside you. All because they saw you were most able to keep me from simply teleporting out and going back to what I was doing before." Reno said, eyes slowly drifting downwards again. "Because no one readily believed a moron kid could do it, Tesei and I got used to grab anything not too locked down and then teleport to fake them out like I would be easily found near the Pokemon Center. Even got dragged along as an emergency exit, which is why I ended up at....Snow.....Point...."
A more familiar set of memories danced through his mind now, but with a few additions that had been omitted from his previous ventures through them. He was still there with Shades, still exploring around for his own amusement while he waited for whatever their job was there to be finished. But now he was messing around with his partner Pokemon, exploring nooks and crannies of the place to see if he might find something useful to get this whole process moving along. And then whatever it was they were doing triggered a rumble, sending one of the nearby archways crumbling to crush him as he walked through it. He was nearly crushed by the debris, only being saved by a quick teleport that sent him and Tesei a few feet further into the section of the temple even as the entrance to it disappeared into the debris. And from there, it once again faded into the familiar, of his desperate attempts to either teleport himself out or find another out to get back to where the Rockets were. And then the eventual pursuit of him by what could've been his own mind breaking down, but what he knew now was the first time he encountered the Ziton.
But as the pursuit drew to its close, with the collection of minds breathing down his neck, things began to twist from what his initial recollection had told him. He didn't feel this spontaneous welling of power as he finally unlocked his psychic potential for one second before burning it out to escape. All he could feel was fear and panic as the monster pursuing him drew closer once more, having finally cornered him in a spot he couldn't somehow manage one last escape by managing to create a divide between him and Tesei. But, in that last moment, those last few seconds that stretched onto infinity, he saw a pink glow begin to envelop him. And then he was looking at the back of this unstoppable behemoth, a tidal wave of eyes suddenly appearing across its body to focus in on where he now was even as it continued its attack on where a small Abra now was. It was a move Tesei should've been able to avoid, even after the Ally Switch with Reno. But the Abra was staying still. Eyes focused on Reno, even as a flurry of tendrils extended to envelop the Psychic Pokemon.
It wasn't much but Reno felt something connecting between them in that focused gesture, something that led him to simply nod towards his Pokemon before attempting to do what he had seen Tesei do a thousand times before: build up energy to try and teleport the both of them out. He had to make something work, something to keep this place from becoming their tomb. And as the thought crossed his mind, he received a thought back. 'Mine, not ours.' And with that, the connection that he had been feeling would erupt like an aggreived volcano. The sudden pain and intense mental anguish as the tendrils finally made contact with Tesei would rupture Reno's desperate attempt at concentrating, sending all the energy he had been building up into teleporting him out. But with no destination in mind from all of the sudden stress, pain, and trauma dumped into his brain, the pink flash would greet Reno with a quick introduction into the ocean in a state that would end with him drowning before long without help. But help would arrive, as a lone Shellder saw the struggling teenager and would quickly place itself in the crook of Reno's arm, doing its best to keep him afloat and steer him towards what seemed to be a shoreline. "Yeah, Tesei. Shore's that'a way. Let's get ta shore." He mumbled.
Back in the present, Reno could finally feel things settling down. Taking a few deep breathes, he would blink back the tears that now seemed to be streaming from his eyes. "I didn't just randomly awaken Psychic powers in Snowpoint. I....I channeled with Tesei the Abra. And was still deep in that connection when the Ziton ripped his mind apart. And in response, my mind just...buried everything it could about the psychic stuff as deep as it could and let it become its own thing. First, some boogeyman, some cartoon villain to scare me away from even having the thought of the power as something that was me, and then as a second side to me, something more intelligent and conniving than I tended to be. Something to tell me how destructive and vile these powers could be..." Still breathing heavily and tears still rolling their way down his cheeks, Reno wouldn't be moving any time soon.

Sub stood there and silence as he watched Reno go quiet himself. For Reno ages had gone by as he recalled the trauma he had suffered but for Sub in the real world his silence only lasted for a few seconds but even for the Dark One those seconds seemed to stretch on for hours. The man should feel a great deal of pity for Reno, even as he spoke again. So much pain the man had suffered already and yet he was still uncovering more pain, pain that was so terrible that his subconsciously forgot about it to protect himself.
"Now that you know how all...this...works, channeling, you know Tesei loved you a great deal for him to be able to do what he did, for you. His love for you was more powerful than the Ziton in that moment. Because of Tesei you escaped what very few, or any, have. I have no doubt Tesei has no regrets for doing what he did. And one day you'll be able to return the favor to him when you destroy that monster for him and all the others. That said..." He said, his eyes drifting over to Tesei the Cloyster. "...this Tesei I'm sure would do the same for you, right buddy?" He asked the Cloyster with a smile. "This one just likes to do things a little more 'hands on' or should I say 'shell on' and by that I mean slam into things." He chuckled. "You going to be okay to keep going?" He asked Reno.

Tesei would respond to Sub's insinuation with a quick lock-and-load on the horn he had, giving a smirk towards his trainer's friend before turning back to where Reno was. And he was still sitting on the ground on the ground, but it seemed like his breathing was finally slowing down. And as his gaze rose up to meet Tesei's, he could see a deep appreciation being directed towards himself. Giving a nod with his whole body, the Cloyster would watch as his trainer finally placed a hand on his leg, gave himself a little push, and finally made to stand up.
Giving a quick wipe of his face to clear off any remaining tears, Reno would look towards Sub with a smile on his face. "Yeah, just needed a minute to process." Giving a nod towards the Cloyster that was still floating in the water, Reno added, "I'd say I should do something in Tesei's memory but apparently I was on top of that even in my fragile state. So all that leaves is the one thing that was always on my plate. Making sure that wherever that thing slinked off to in Ultra Space can be found and finishing the fight. But we've torn enough holes in reality for a while now, so we can leave that particular manhunt for later."
Opening Tesei's Pokeball and returning the Water type to his home, Reno would give a nod towards the guard at the gate in front of them. "Now, lets go have a fun time seeing exactly how we stack up against the Elite Four." Reno told Sub, already cracking open his badge case before the guard could speak. But they would still get the spiel. "Only those holding the Marsh Badge or the Storm Badge may pass." And once Sub followed suit with showing his respective badge, the gate in front of them would open. Watching as the gate closed shut once more, Reno would blow out a breath before asking, "Well, I just told my entire childhood. Care to reciprocate? I know it involved a guy whose name you have....lets call it borrowed. What else is there to that story?"

"...Subbarao..." Sub said in a solemn tone, letting the name drift out of his mouth and float around them before continuing. "I was an orphan, taken into the Tin Tower as a newborn, having never known my birth parents. There I was raised in the Rainbow Way as an Emissary of the Rainbow Emperor, the Eternal himself. I hated everything about the tower and the monks, even from a very early age. Life was hard and cruel with them, emotionless as they believe in eschewing all emotional attachments and replacing them with hard work and sacrifice. When I was nine I planned that on my tenth birthday I'd run away and become a trainer...that was until he showed up..."
"He was newly orphaned, his parents just killed, as faithful followers of the Rainbow Way their will declared their son was to be turned over to the monks and so he was. He was just a five year old little boy and I couldn't help but pity him. At first I just intended to console him but quickly we grew close and before long we considered each other brothers. We were inseparable, much to the chagrin of the monks, particularly the elder. They'd do anything they could to keep us apart but always failed to in the end." Sub said, smiling as he recalled some fond memories.
"As part of our teachings we were to walk Ecruteak and look for people who needed help, whatever it was, even work. We dreamed of being heroes, perhaps as a coping mechanism, and called these our 'missions'. Well one day the elder was punishing me with chores while Subbarao was out on a 'mission', another way to keep us apart, his first time alone on a mission. He'd come across a young girl whose Hoppip got blown into a tree and took it upon himself, as a hero, to climb the tree and save the Hoppip...however this particular tree was a Kakuna nest..." Sub said, beginning to sniffle.
"By the time I arrived he was gone, that damn girl and her damn Hoppip just standing there look stupid. Why couldn't she have gone to get someone...why was her Hoppip so damn important! Subbarao would still be-..." Sub stopped himself as he realized he was starting to yell, his emotions overwhelming him for a brief moment. "That day he was cremated as the faith demanded and his ashes scattered from the top of the tower. Immediately I was expected to go back to normal life, as if nothing happened. I was unable to get over it like the elder wanted and was punished with chores, like usual. I did my chores that day, did them perfectly, but that night I set fire to my room and left the tower for good, leaving behind my name and taking on a new one in honor of my brother. From that day forth I was Sub."
"Originally I wanted to honor his memory by becoming a powerful trainer who used his Pokemon to help people, like a hero, however cruel reality got in the way and I was led down a path of crime that guided me into the jaws of Team Rocket. There I blackened my soul, taking on new names, disrespecting Subbarao's memory. When I had encountered Ein that was when I decided to make right my many wrongs, to go forth in the name of Sub once more and make sure no one ever suffered at the hands of evil again, no matter what I had to do. I was going to do the right thing no matter the cost, to become the hero Subbarao thought I was." He said, looking up at the sky, as if he saw his brother in the clouds.
"Only those holding the Volcano Badge or the Glacier Badge may pass." The guard declared, Sub just then realizing they made it to the next gate, his mind having drifted off elsewhere for a time. Once they both showed off their badges the gate would open and reveal this time dry land, the water portion of Route 23 finally coming to an end. Once his Hydreigon landed he'd thank the Pokemon and recall it, then proceeding to continue their trek once Reno was ready.
"Guess it's my turn to ask a question again. Tell me more about the Ziton. What else do you know about it? Anything you haven't shared with me yet?" He asked Reno.

Reno was doing his best to keep pace with Sub's story, keeping himself assessed on the whole lost his blood brother and went on a bit of a dark binge because of it story. But a part of himself couldn't help but latch onto one detail in the story that stood out as odd: Subbarao was taken out by a Kakuna nest, but somehow ended up a part of the Ziton. And there is no way Sub would've skimmed over his original best friend being a psychic prodigy, so Subbarao somehow managing to keep his mind in this reality himself without anything to anchor to seemed exceedingly unlikely. Which meant the Ziton was there, somehow. He really hated that Divit was right about that zen future or past nonsense he gave at the Isle of Armor when it came to this thing.
Clicking open his badge case as he heard the ask from the guard, he would pass through the gate alongside Sub. And before he could gather his thoughts to figure out a question for the bits of history that came after he came back to the name Sub, Reno found himself once again on the questioned side of things. "Well.... I gave the broad strokes pretty quickly in Galar, so might as well start from scratch on the whole thing. The Ziton as a whole entity is a collection of Psychics, both Pokemon and human, all held together in this one entity. Power-wise, it can make itself look like the physical appearance of any mind it has possessed and, as we saw with Crystal, it can hide within a body. It also has a massive quantity of Psychic energy that allows for it to do...a ton? Honestly, whatever it can think of it seems like." Reno stopped himself, sighing as he figured it would be easiest to just jump straight in. "But that's taking it as a whole. The thing that really makes it dangerous, that steers that ball of primal consumption is a central mind: The Master."
"That's definitely not his true name but its all I know him by. He is either the original Psychic Channeler Master or at least was the first notable one. And at some point way in past, he ended up latched onto this core of power. And in pursuit of restoring what that core used to be, he set himself to work steering it to grab and consume whatever Psychic power sources it could. I don't know if its a return on investment thing or a personal taste thing, but it only seems to do it to suitably powerful sources." Reno would pause to scratch his chin before adding, "Might be presumptuous to put myself in that category. I'll go with also personally hates me. Which is interesting since I am the one who kinda freed it..."
"Yeah, should probably go over that too." Reno sheepishly added, scratching at the back of his head. "The Ziton got sealed at some point in the distant past by this separate sect of Psychic Channelers. And I got recommended to go check out that place because they were unique channelers, had this mystical artifact that connected back to their original Psychic Master, and would be helpful since I am not exactly a traditional Psychic Channeler myself. What I found was a chest under an ancient tree, a guy calling himself the Master when I meditated there, and released the Ziton when I opened the chest after that Master dude attempted to consume my mind. It stopped the whole predation on anyone who went there for training thing, but apparently I did not squash it out well enough in that first fight to stop it permanently. And that is everything I know for certain."
Pinching at his brow, Reno would take a moment before speaking again. "Then there's the things I either can't confirm or don't have definitive proof for. First off, the thing survived that jump into Ultra Space and has likely used that outside perspective to end up in places in our timeline before it was actually released. Nothing definitive for that, but the fact that Subbarao was in that thing and it attacking me in the Snowpoint Temple in the past points to it being likely. And second, that mind at the core of it originally started as some guy called Ultrarius. And....geez, even with all the caveats, everything I got around that name sounds absolutely insane."
Before he could continue, a voice would interrupt the distracted Reno. "Only those holding the Earth Badge or the Rising Badge may pass." The guard announced, turning Reno's attention from Sub and their discussion to open his badge case. Once Sub showed his matching badge, the gate would open and reveal the final approach to the Indigo Plateau. Passing through once Sub had done so, Reno gave Sub a look. "Well, we can either talk about what exactly happened between meeting Ein and now to get Snagem started, because I know that some of the people here did not end up here by their own volition, or we can keep on that whole Ultrarius insanity and you can get to hear that particular batch of schizophrenic-sounding ramblings. Your choice." He asked.

"Heh, that sounds about right for you, doesn't it? You get a teacher and said teacher decides you require more unique tutelage than they can provide so they send you to learn from more unorthodox sources and oops it only made things worse." Sub laughed, he had to laugh, even though the Ziton was not a laughing matter and a real and still lingering danger to his team laughing was his way of coping, always had been. "But the Ziton though...even with what you know about it something still doesn't sit right with me about it...and that's still taking in account how strange it is. It's clearly Psychic in nature but I can...feel...it, that shouldn't happen." The Dark One admitted, talking as Reno pinched his brow.
When Reno mentioned Subbarao he flinched, he knew about Reno's discovery of Subbarao's mind being part of it but piecing all this together was leading him to a startling conclusion, that what he thought what happened to his brother all those years ago may not be what actually happened. If that was the case was this not the only influenced incident in his life? "Ultrarius..." He muttered to himself, the name sounding almost familiar even though he knew he'd never heard it before.
After showing his Rising Badge the final gate opened for the pair and revealed not the Pokemon League proper but the wall of a cliff. The path before them would lead them to the cliff's wall and into a cave, the only path of advancement they could see. From their vantage point they could see that high up the cliff, on top of the plateau, was the aptly named Indigo Plateau. The sign to their right would read:
[Victory Road ahead. Last chance to turn back. No emergency services provided beyond this point.]
Sub smiled at the sign and continued to move forward, towards the entrance of Victory Road. "As if lack of cops or ambulances ever bothered us, right?" He chuckled. As they passed through the cave entrance Sub immediately released Ulalume the Malamar, instructing her to use Flash to light up the dark cave for them, the Overturning Pokemon's body shining bright as she floated alongside her trainer. "Now then...you wanted to know how some people got involved in Snagem, right? I admit, few were just chance encounters, I spent a considerable amount of time scoping out prospective members, like Blizz. A highly talented trainer spoke well of in the league as a successor to Pryce, only for him to mysteriously disappear for a time. Imagine my surprised when I found out that talented trainer had a faithful encounter and became a hybrid. Even more reason for me to recruit him."
"Or the talented Psychic of Alto Mare, Crystal. Took a few bops on my head trying to get her to join up. Darts was easier, money and coffee and a promise of no spiral staircases." Sub said, recalling fondly how he found some of the members. "Now back to this...Ultrarius...where have I heard that name before..." He said, muttering the last part.

Reno would keep quiet as they passed through the gate, Sub's idle musings doing everything to give himself more evidence for what he had been imagining to be true. But to distract himself for a moment, with the idle belief that maybe Sub would focus on the topic he had offered, Reno found himself with a different thought. Of course the initial members of the team had been actively hunted. There was no other way a group like this could have initially collected together without someone's hand on the scale to tip it towards that level of strength. While any other additions past that wouldn't have likely been collected up in such a manner, that initial bit of extra momentum from starting this strong definitely made sure anyone else caught in the wake would either be that strong or be able to get somewhere close to that level.
But of course, it would have loop back to the one subject that had started this whole long running discussion eh and Sub had been having the whole trip, even if Sub hadn't quite made the connection to the first things Reno had said. "Alright. I know I said some of this stuff when we finally blew up at each other, but we were both pretty high on emotions at the time. The Ziton tried to bring me to heel with a show of force from the center of that particular Tootsie Pop, and it referred to the identity of this....I'm assuming guy, as Ultrarius. Wasn't as life altering to me as the Ziton assumed it would be, beat the brakes off of it, went back to the current Psychic Grand Master. And that's when things got very interesting..."
Staring out into the inky blackness that lay just outside of Ulalume's illumination like he expected something to jump out, Reno said, "She acted like I had just told her Giratina was outside for tea. The amount of fear a person who is basically a singular mind has to have to brush past the mind collecting monstrosity and jump straight to the random unknown name as the thing to fear.....it left an impression. But as far as I knew, this was the end of the issue. Ziton dead, funny name to maybe look at a history book for if I ever had a slow day, call it there. And then you actively did that massive burst of Channeling. And I felt the exact energy signature that the Ziton had shown me as Ultrarius'." Reno would begin to actively tap out a beat on his prosthetic leg, barely paying attention to the exact pattern as much as just using the motion to help keep himself focused.
"Went looking around a bit after everything calmed down. Kept it mostly to real ancient history since it was a person that Master Maya actively reacted to. Didn't find anything about the name. Decided I'd keep it as a passing hobby since it was basically fishing into the past and seeing what random information for ancient cultures came up. After Robin showed up and I got the whole hint with the cult thing, changed research directions. Would've just asked him directly but I was slightly out of commission for a few weeks due to....this," Reno gestured towards his prosthetic leg, "And he had disappeared when I could actively look. Tried to look for his cult specifically, but all online sources were buried in the speculation around my sparring match on live TV with the Ziton and looking to older texts didn't offer much help since mystery cults have this funny habit of keeping their worship stuff a secret. Did end up finding a bunch of people who worshipped the Unown, seemed to think that if enough of them gathered together that they would be able to bend reality or stuff like that."
"So....yeah. Ultrarius is someone the first Psychic Grand Master thought was important enough to keep his mind around to try and....resurrect, I guess, by feeding his dormant mind psychic energy. His name is well known enough and collected enough fear that the older Masters react to it like saying it will summon him from the void. Don't know if that cult of Robin's knows anything and haven't found them to check. And somehow you have the exact same energy signature as this faceless entity, which maybe means reincarnation is a thing?" Looking over to Sub as he finished, Reno would only offer a shrug. "Like I said, sounds absolutely insane when laid out all together."

Every time Reno said the name 'Ultrarius' a pulsating pressure became apparent in Sub's brain, or at least what felt like his brain. It didn't hurt but it was noticeable and yet part of him questioned if that was an actual physical feeling at all. Sub would listened as they walked but the more Reno said the slower his pace became until Sub was standing completely still in the dark cave system, staring off far off in the darkness, where Ulalume's light could not reach. There was nothing interesting to see in that direction, just rocks and darkness, and yet Sub's stare was focused on something, that noticeable look that someone was trying their hardest to make something out in the distance but again all Reno could see was darkness. And that's exactly what the Dark One was looking at, the darkness, and what dwell within.
As Reno finished what he had to say several seconds of silence would follow as Sub just stood and stared, the Psychic Channeler likely about to say or do something to break the silence but before he did something felt like it just 'snapped'. Nothing physical mind you, nor was it something within either of them, but rather something in the universe itself just snapped and Reno could feel it, it was unmistakable and undeniable that something just changed, permanently. A feeling of wrongness would suddenly overwhelm Reno shortly after this 'snap', giving him just moments to consider the nature of what happened. Looking to Sub he could easily pinpoint the source, the point from which these dark tidings originate.
All at once numerous dark emotions, thoughts and memories would flood to the forefront and attempt to overwhelm him. Every fear he's ever had, every doubt, every sorrow, all of them forced to the surface by this darkness. Looking to Sub he did not see Sub anymore, the Snagem leader still physically there but from Reno's point of view his teammate was gone and in his place was this...thing...a darkness shaped like a man. It was he would was pulling these things from the depths of Reno's soul and forcing him to experience them. Having no time to worry about where Sub went nor how to stop this...Dark One...from manipulating him Reno would have to instead focus on fighting back this darkness within him least it consume him as it threatened to. The Psychic Channeler was no stranger to internally mental struggles and now was the time to show the darkness it had no sway over him.
But before Reno would win this struggle he would feel it, the actual source of the wrongness, the dark veil it hid behind now lifted. It had peered at him from across space and time, its gaze piercing through the universe to stare at him from across the cosmos. It did not appear to attack, as Reno might feel it was going to, but it was watching him, perhaps even plotting. Why it did he would not figure out as all these sensations would end abruptly all at once and Reno would find himself back in he caves of Victory Road, his traveling companion passed out on the cave floor with his Malamar trying to slap him away.
"Mala! Malamar!" Ulalume shouted at Reno now that he was moving again. From her point of view he was just standing there in silence this whole time staring off into space.

Well, whatever he had awoken in Sub had decided that it was going to fight him on a battlefield that he was very familiar with. And while it definitely had the element of surprise for the first hit, Reno was very familiar with attempting to amplify his own insecurities and dark thoughts to overwhelm him. While it was from a different angle than the Ziton had come from, Ultrarius was going to get a surprise when he unleashed his counter.
A counter which landed on nothing as the sensation ripped itself away, replaced instead with a sensation that was peering from.....beyond so many different veils of time and space that it would seem absurd for most people to think it anything but some paranoid hallucination. Unfortunately, as someone well acquainted with the intricacies of Ultra Space, Reno knew very well that this was certainly real. And with who it seemed was needed to open the way for this new sensation, it didn't take much of a logical leap to guess what exactly had been poked out in the grand wealth of space-time.
Before he could focus down on confirming his thoughts, the sensations would end, leaving Reno standing in the middle of the cavern as Sub's Malamar attempted to awaken her Trainer. "Whoa, whoa. Easy, there.....Allen? I don't know your names that well, sorry." Reno sheepishly said, walking over to where Sub was currently passed out on the ground. Okay, that certainly confirmed that whatever was up with Sub was connected to this Ultrarius person. But was that...entity strong enough to channel without an artifact? I mean, if he wanted to confirm whether or not Sub actually had anything resembling an artifact, this was the perfect opportunity to search him.
But would he really throw away all the progress those gates had represented, all the opening up they had done, just for one paranoid thought?
Sighing as he shoved that errant thought back down inside, Reno would load Sub onto his left shoulder in a fireman's carry. "Alright.....Malamar whose name I am not guessing. Keep the lights on and keep an eye out. I'll carry the pillow princess out of here. Then I'm making sure to ask if he has anything that could even remotely work as a channeling artifact on him after that. Assuming he remembers it." Making a contemplative noise as another thought crossed his mind, Reno would tap at his prosthetic arm before speaking into the SNAG he had activated. "GRAY, remind me: did we ever use that weird casing from Kalos that Sub was so interested in for anything besides that channeling amplifier?" He questioned, slowly tromping his way through the caverns of Victory Road. Hopefully he got some sort of answer, although he figured actually getting any more answers after this big revelation was a bit of a long shot.
