Brassius nodded as Wren spoke, all his words true, his words bringing up memories of the stories his father and grandfather told him as he gazed out at the town he and his family loved so much. "Everything you say is correct. Artazon once was nothing more than a carved out bowl in the Earth, greedy people destroying nature and once they had extracted everything of value they moved on, leaving behind terrible scars in the land. It was my great great grandfather who first witnessed the damage and decided he'd help the land heal." The gym leader began to say.

"It's like you said, he, and his family, were talented Grass Channelers, though not native to here in Paldea. Family lore says we are descended from a clan of nomadic merchants but it's not something I ever confirmed, nor is it important. My great great grandfather got the process of restoring the land to nature going and taught his sons how to harness the power of Grass and they continued the project until Artazon became the place you see it as today. That said the gift has since been lost in my family, with my grandfather having been the last of the fully fledged Grass Channelers. My father is in tune with Grass Pokemon but not enough to Channel and it seems to have fully puttered out with me, unfortunately." Brassius explained, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

Wren hung his head a bit as Brassius confirmed both his hope and his fear in the same breath, it it seemed. It was true the green hamlet had been built up by channelers but Brassius wasn't one, himself. "Then I would assume you don't know how your ancestors did it?" He asked, trying not to look too crestfallen. It wasn't Brassius' fault if he didn't know the secrets behind it all and he didn't want the man to feel like he was being blamed for a lack of knowledge one couldn't expect him to have. He crossed his fingers, mentally, and hoped that even if Brassius couldn't use the knowledge, that perhaps someone had passed it on to him. If so, it just may hold the key to his own quest.

"How they did it exactly? No, I do not." Brassius responded, a hint of disappointment in his voice, as if he was disappointed in himself, that such a feat was something he already was ashamed of being unable to do before Wren ever came along. "But..." He started, removing the coiled up whip hanging from his side. "...this is my family's Channeling artifact, an heirloom passed down from son to son." He said, holding it up so Wren could get a good look at it.

To Brassius it was just a whip, one designed to look like a thorny vine but Wren would only have to gaze upon it for a few seconds before he could register the latent power existing within it. It was old, very old, felt like an ancient tree that has stood strong for centuries. Besides its power and age Wren would note one other thing about the whip; it was reaching out for someone, for someone to connect with, to draw power from and grant power in return. All artifacts desired a 'partner', someone to latch onto and become one with, however this one was particularly 'hungry', as if it was truly a living thing.

"Unfortunately I am incapable of establishing a connection with it so for me it's nothing more than a treasured family heirloom, and a good luck charm. Some of the best things that have ever happened to me have happened while I had this whip on me, such as becoming a Gym Leader. Sometimes I feel like maybe I can Channel with it, just not very much. It's something I tell myself to make myself feel better." Brassius chuckled.

Wren sighed somewhat heavily when Brassius confirmed once more that this may be a lost cause for him. "I was afraid you might say that. I had hoped you, of all people, would be the one most likely to know how revitalizing the area had been done." He admitted, though perked up when he was shown the whip Brassius carried.

"That's definitely an artifact. I can feel the energy coming off of it." He responded, leaning in a bit closer to get a closer look. Something about it felt off but, for a moment, he wasn't quite sure what it was and then it hit him. All artifacts seemed to have some kind of inner will of their own, a "craving" or "hunger" that drove them to draw a suitable partner to them if they had none, he felt it from his own for the first little while he'd had it, before he'd fully bonded with it properly. This one, however? It wasn't a fully natural artifact like his was and yet it's "hunger" was tangibly greater than his own. Perhaps it was because it had been without a proper channeling partner for such a long time now but he felt there was more to it than even that. Maybe it was tied into the secrets he had come looking for?

"Brassius... Is that whip crafted from natural fibers? It looks very much like it's simply a vine but it's clearly more than that. I can't tell what it's made of but it's not a simple material like leather, cotton or wool." He'd completely lost the plot as Brassius had gone off on his short tangent about his methods of emotional convalescence. "I shouldn't be surprised if it belonged to a grass channeler, to be honest... My own artifact was crafted using lost techniques, after all."

"It is, all natural fibers. I'm told it's made from a specific mix of fibers to pair with a certain set of Grass type Pokemon, the fibers coming from those Grass types. Apparently designing it in such a way allowed for more finely tuned Channeling. What that entails I do not know. However the story also goes that designing it this way also had a downside, at least for descendants, in that it makes it difficult to pair it with the right Channeler and Pokemon. It's one-of-a-kind to a fault I suppose." Brassius responded, running his thumb over the whip as he felt the material.

"Not even our local Grass Channelers are capable of attempting a connection. Nor were they able to discern its actual mix of fibers, other than one of the cotton Pokemon and a cacti. There is one type of fiber that befuddles them, something they can't pair to a general species." He continued, revealing to Wren they had a local group of Grass Channelers here, though Brassius was not one of them.

Wren found his suspicions confirmed right away and let out a low whistle of appreciation. "I'd love to take some time to figure that out but I'm afraid if more skilled channelers than me can't identify it, then I could spend a lifetime and not know." He stated wistfully. "My artifact is crafted from Cactus silk and it seems the art of making it has been lost for decades. I'm not entirely sure where to find her or if she's even still alive but I met an old woman in Unova who remembered how to make it and she taught me years ago." He explained, raising his arm to show the silken bracelet on his left wrist, the large gracidea-like flower growing from it appearing like a living buckler shield on the outside of his wrist.

"My personal interest aside, you have other channelers living here? I was under the impression we were uncommon enough most places don't even know we we exist." He questioned. "I shouldn't be surprised if they had a hand in making all this-" He gestured to the town around them at this point "-possible but for some reason, it still strikes me as strange to find more than one in one place outside of my own organization. And even we don't seem to collect multiple Channelers of the same type very often." He admitted, laughing softly as that realization struck him. How strange it truly was to find himself here in spite of his active attempt at finding this kind of information.

Brassius smiled wide as Wren pointed out how unusual it was to have so many Channelers here, especially all of the same type. It was something of note that was pointed out often and one of which Brassius was glad to explain every time. "There is a reason for that you know, it's not like they all ended up here by accident. You can thank my ancestors for that too." The gym leader said with a laugh as he cleaned up the paint off his hands.

"My ancestors designated the town as a refuge for Grass Channelers all over the world, the previous Grass Grand Master having lived here long ago even. While we have no such master any longer the tradition of Grass Channelers at least visiting Artazon has endured and many decide to settle down here once they get a taste of the community here." Brassius explained.

Wren nodded calmly along with Brassius as he explained, at least in part, why there were so many Grass Channelers living in Artazon. "I can understand how they might have been drawn here, having seen it for myself. The area is practically buzzing with natural energy and the view is to die for. The local artist adding his own touch to the landscape doesn't hurt that." He admitted, shaking his head softly even as he did. "If not for my own goals back home, I'd be tempted to come stay here, myself."

"I'm afraid I've heard nothing of a current grand master of the Grass-type, myself, so I'm rather surprised to learn the last had lived here. Only slightly, though." He admitted with a bit of a laugh. "I suppose if you're not a channeler, yourself and if there is no current grand master to be found here, then I should continue searching for clues to continue my training, then." He sighed, holding his chin as he looked to the ground in thought.. "I'm afraid I'm at a loss for where to look next, though. Perhaps Cortazon might be worth a visit for other reasons, though? I could take soil samples there for the company. I hear the farmland surrounding that town is some of the best in the regiaon." He'd begun to talk to himself at this point, trying to get his thoughts in order before deciding where to go or what he might do. Unless Brassius had a suggestion for something he could check out in Artazon, it might be time for him to move on to another destination for now.

"Tell you what..." Brassius began, digging out his paint covered Rotom phone from his pocket, then letting it go as the phone rose up into the air and found a position to however right in front of him, the man then proceeding to tap on it a few times before continuing his sentence. "...I would like to introduce you to the Artazon Commune of Artisanal Grass Channelers, the group of Grass Channelers here in town, if the name didn't make that obvious." He chuckled, tapping on the phone one last time before it fly back into his pocket on its own.

"I just let this month's chairman know you might be interested in meeting them. Couldn't hurt to meet some more Grass Channelers, right? You might learn something or at least find direction on where to go from here, more than I could provide you. Plus I'm sure they would be thrilled to meet a new Grass Channeler. Been a few years since any newcomers have showed up, not that they ever come in droves but you know what I mean." He said with a smile. "If you would like to meet them their compound is in the southern part of the city, just on the other side of Artazon Lake, just barely within city limits. You'll see four cabins all facing the giant Rindo Berry tree, that's them."

Wren had just begun to turn and walk away, just beginning to lift his hand and wave when Brassius made the offer of introducing him to the local artisans and Grass Channelers. "Oh? I hadn't even thought to ask about chatting with them. I suppose I got a bit too caught up in my thoughts for a moment, there." He admitted as he stopped, rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment for a moment and laughing a bit nervously. "Thank you! I'm sure they'll be able to give me some kind of useful information." He said more to himself than to Brassius, extending his arm to offer a grateful shake of the artist's hand before heading off in the indicated direction.

Once he had headed off, he began to look around for the structures Brassius told him about. "Four cabins surrounding a giant Rindo berry tree on the southern edge of town, he said." He muttered to himself as he neared the edge of town, following the cobblestone paths as best he could to avoid damaging the clearly carefully tended lawns. As he drew nearer the edge of town, he saw the small lake, though he had to admit calling it that felt generous. To him it felt more like a large pond was more appropriate for the body of water but this wasn't his home and he wasn't in any position to be criticizing the locals choice of names, so he kept that to himself and scanned the horizon as he drew closer, hoping to spot the tree and cabins nearby as he head toward it.

He found himself stopping more than once to admire just how well-tended the local plants were along with taking in a bit more of Brassius' art in the various sculptures he spotted along the way but, eventually, he found the site he'd been pointed to and made his way toward the center of the area, intending to stop under the rindo tree and see if he spotted anyone before approaching any of the buildings directly. If Brassius had alerted them they would have a guest, he hoped he'd found the place before anyone gave up on expecting him.

"You must be Wren..." A voice called out to Wren from behind him. Turning around he would spot a tall, kind of lanky, man with sun kissed tan skin and pitch black short curly hair. Walking beside the man was a tall (for a cat) feline Pokemon, a Meowscarada is Wren was familiar with the species yet. "Mi nombre es Arturo, or as some call me Maestro Arturo. Pleased to make your acquaintance." The man said as he approached Wren, giving him a little bow once he was in proper conversation range, his Pokemon mimicking the bow. "Welcome to our cozy little corner of Paldea. Brassius told me to expect you. Said you might have some questions for us."

"Welcome to our cozy little corner of Paldea. Brassius told me to expect you. Said you might have some questions for us."

Wren turned at the sound of a voice calling out to him, leaning forward and away from the trunk of the rindo tree he'd only just begun to lean against while he waited. It took only a second or two to spot the source of the voice, a rather attractive man who appeared to be a Paldean native from how he spoke the language. He might have been an Alolan transplant, however. It was hard to say based only on what he could see surface level. "Oye!" He called out in greeting, throwing his arm into the air as he waved, thinking for a moment that he recognized the feline Pokemon at the man's side. He recalled seeing several people in Mesagoza who had been walking around with them while he was browsing the school's library. He'd learned they were the final stage of one of the region's starter Pokemon but was drawing a blank at the moment regarding it's species' name.

"Thanks for the time!" He offered as the man drew closer. "I was hoping someone might be able to help me with some channeling information. I wasn't aware such a large group of Channelers had convened in one location or I'd have come looking ages ago." He admitted with a bit of a nervous laugh. "I'm not exactly what you'd call 'trained" in the art, myself."

"Well that isn't surprising, cariño..." The man said as he walked closer to Wren, passing by him with just a foot of distance between them and flashing him a smile before continuing to advance past him, towards the cabins on the other side of the tree. "...there aren't too many groups of Channelers of any type these days, as I'm assuming you already know. For most it's a lost art...qué lástima." He bemused, letting out a sigh and a shrug. His Pokemon mimicked.

"But!" He shouted, spinning around on his heel with a flourish to face Wren again. "We are trying our best to at least keep the Ways of the Evergreen alive! The power of the Grass Channeler must never be allowed to wither. So, cariño, you have come to the right place...welcome to the Artazon Commune of Artisanal Grass Channelers!" He said, flinging his arms out as if for emphasis. Again the feline copied him, it seemed to like doing so. "...forgive the name, I didn't come up with it. Trust me, if I did I'd pick some more...flamboyant? I think is the word." He said, giving Wren a little wink.

"Come, let's go inside. We can have tea together." He said, urging Wren to follow him with a 'come here' gesture of his finger before turning away, his Meowscarada giving Wren a bit of a push before skipping to catch up to their trainer.

Eventually they would all make it into the cabin and inside Wren would find the place to be completely handmade, including almost all the items inside. The logs that made the cabin were hand carved inside with intricate patterns, largely detailing foliage and Grass Pokemon. Light was provided currently by sunroofs built into the roof. As for some of the items he could spot what was clearing handwoven rugs, carved wooden chairs, and some beautiful clay pottery. It was artisanal from top to bottom. "Please, sit." The man said, gesturing to a table at the front of the cabin in what was the little kitchen area.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 14, 2024 8:46 pm

Wren couldn't help but be momentarily distracted by how close the other man got when he walked by. For a moment, he felt his nose assaulted by a delicate scent as the man passed but he couldn't tell if it was his own, some kind of perfume the channelers here made or a scent his Pokemon gave off as it mimicked his somewhat theatrical movements at close range. Some Grass-types gave off a natural parfum, as he was intimately familiar with so it could be any thing. "I'm entirely too aware of how few Channelers number these days. I didn't even realize I was one for years after first tapping into the skills and still barely understand it due to a lack of proper training." He explained. "I had hoped to remedy that somewhat by coming here, as I've already said, so judging you or your organization is the last thing I want to do." He responded, following Arturo as he was invited and subsequently lead inside one of the cabins.

Upon entering the building, he would immediately begin to take in the many handcrafted pieces that were used to decorate."I can see why you would be called a commune of 'artisanal' channelers. Is everything here made using Channeling?" He asked. Almost every item in the cabin gave off a faint "glow" of natural energy, an aura of fresh life that practically radiated from the core of each item. It was a familiar sort of energy that reminded him of the silk bracelet on his wrist but felt more... refined? Was that the right word?

"Yes, everything you see, up to the crown molding, is made from Grass Channeling. It's our specialty, we create things with our Channeling as a form of practice in honing our abilities." Arturo answered Wren as he approached the table with what looked like a shiny wooden teapot on a wood tray with two wooden cups. Even they were intricately hand decorated. He would set the tray down on the table in front of Wren and would remove the cup depicting several Petilil and set it directly in front of Wren before picking up the tea pot.

"You feel it, don't you? The natural energy emitting from every part of the cabin." The man said with a smile, his Meowscarada now leaning forward on the table to get a good look at Wren's reactions. "You could say all our crafts are granted a bit of our spirit, forming a bond between us. With a little more intent, effort, and purpose we can even make Channeling artifacts."
