I was raised Christian, like many of us.^_^ But I found a lot of the aspects of the religion to be a bit morbid, and the way that it was taught focused a little too much on fear of punishment for my taste- the punishments also seemed to be extremely unreasonable, and were inconsistent with the concept of a loving God, and many of that god's actions (as claimed in the texts, anyway) didn't seem compatible with the concept of an omnipotent or omniscient God, as He was supposed to be. But I didn't really know anything else was out there- I loved mythology, because I have always loved a good story- but they were taught to me as stories, and it honestly didn't register with me that there was anything out there besides Christianity. So I was spiritually apathetic for a while- that's probably the best way to describe it. My parents noticed this (I think I played sick to avoid church more frequently than I attempted to stay home from school^_^'), and my mother hoped to trigger my spiritual development by letting me look around and chose my own religion (read: my own brand of Christianity). We were going to go to all the different churches in town, but the first one which we hit on had a really nice preacher who was well versed in the mythology and philosophy of many religions- not just Christianity- and he was willing to discuss them with me in a respectful manner. I figured this was as good as it was going to get, and decided to stick with this church- I even became something of a "Born Again" Christian because I liked this priest very much and wanted to make him feel that he had done well by me. I still had a lot of conflicts with the faith, but this priest was willing to stay after church and discuss these with me privately- sometimes for quite some time- and as long as I could talk with him I was able to hold it together. But it was a Methodist church, and Methodists rotate their priests every few years. So this priest eventually left, and another one came in his place- while I was helping the new priest to move into the church office I found an abandoned kitten in the back parking lot. This kitten would later grow into something of a guide, whom I believe was sent to me by Bast, as the time when I would start seriously seeking was coming up.
The new preacher delivered a sermon which, to me, highlighted all the things that I found incompatible in Christianity, and I came home frustrated and in tears and knowing that I couldn't go back there; I didn't have the resources to do the kind of maintenance that it took for me to repair the damage these conflicts dealt to my spiritual relationship. In a bout of depression, I went out walking, wandered into a book store, and found Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. I bought it out of curiosity, at first- I'd never heard of this religion, and I was amazed by what I read. Little by little I learned about this style of religion and found many points which made exquisite sense to me. I started practicing, and took a special interest in magical theory- even though I couldn't seem to find much of a use for it, at the time.^_^' But as my spiritual relationship thrived and developed, my focus was gradually shifting. I didn't even notice it at first, and when I realized something was definitely up, I had changed the framework of my beliefs in a way which no longer reflected Wiccan theology- I had become a reconstructionist.
I thought I was being novel and creative at the time, lol. I went online looking for resources on ancient Egyptian religion and found the modern Kemetic community. At first I learned from the Kemetic Orthodox sect, then gradually moved on through the other temple traditions, picking up many useful lessons as I went. And here I am.^_^
