it's true that english has simple grammar
but a reason why the language is so hard to learn is because we break so many rules!have you guys noticed how many "exceptions" we have to the grammar laws we set?

My native language is german and the first language I learned in school was english, it think it was also the easiest grammar wise. It is very easy once you take a look at other languages.

I'm chinese, and I know how to speak it well, too. But, I can speak english better than most of the americans in my class. It's somewhat...sad...

Wow, I found that extremely interesting. I have never really thought of the word 'Up' in that way.

It's amazing how one word can have so many different meanings.

Yeah, I've read a bunch of things like that...

And that, to me, is the best (or sometimes, worst) thing about the English language. I've never heard of these sorts of things in any other tounge. English has this unique allowance for many, many layers of expression, as other people here have mentioned.

Haha, that's pretty smart and interesting.

I'm glad English is my first language because I think it'd be hard to learn since there's multiple words that sound the same and mean the same thing while in Spanish turning right is different than being right.

You just reminded me of a Victor Borge routine.

Quote:
Let's see what this sounds like. ...see what it sounds like? Why don't we listen to what it looks like? It's your language, I'm just trying to use it. A friend of mine says he -- what was it? -- that he sits up at night and sits down in the daytime. So how can you sit up and how can you sit down? And how can you do one at night and the other in the daytime? ...and another friend of mine says he can't stand sitting.

No wonder he came up with phonetic (sp???) punctuation.

I've read something like that before, but I only remember one:

"How can my house burn down when it's up in flames?"
