and I think my dad wants me to make him a beanie for winter... o_o; may have found a way to use some of this homespun xD now to find beanie patterns for dudes...

The thing about beanies is they're gender neutral. Add a brim and it's a little more girlie, do some ribbing and it could be more manly.
A really basic beanie pattern that I use a lot is at http://chicknits.com/chichatpattern.shtml. It's called a Vanilla Beanie. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy to do things like change the types of stitches or add a pattern in or whatever.
