A Spanish class teaches you how to speak Spanish properly in grammar, punctuation and all of that.
A French class does the same thing for French.
Italian for Italian, et cetera...
Why is an English class not doing the same thing?

My English teacher is very competent, though, and I don't have any complaints about her.

"An English class" as you are using it is directed at native speakers of English. They are supposed to know grammar, so they can get right to the deeper stuff.

Same with x classes in places where they speak x.

"Okay, the past tense of A is B, except when it is proceeded by C in which case it is W."

Ok? That's confusing!

I too agree that our English teachers should know what they're teaching before they start teaching it to us! I have found my teacher rather annoying in the aspect that she tries to incorporate English AND Drama into her lesson... And fails miserably!

And shouldn't it be 'Whom'? Not 'Who'?

I'm glad I'm not just being picky... Though it's still kind of annoys me that I only got a B in the exam (she probably marked me down for correcting her).

Yes, Latin should be taught in schools, but they should really be teaching people English grammar anyway! I want to take Latin next year, but my mother won't let me. She says that if I want to learn grammar I can ask her (she writes English for foreign language uses exam papers). I'd still like to learn Latin anyway.

I think the English teachers over here are alright mostly, or at least I can't really remember any amusing stories right now.
Although in secondary school, our Icelandic teacher didn't know how to use punctuation, especially not in abbrevations. Also, we had the same woman teach us Danish (even though she was an Icelandic teacher) and every time she didn't know what a word meant (which was most of the time anyway) she'd say 'well.. Anna, would you care to explain that to him/her?', even though it was quite obvious she just had no idea rolleyes

I think the grammar thing is similar with many languages, that is, you don't learn that intricate grammar in your motherlanguage; Icelandic has grammar as complex as latin, but I don't know.. I think I'd like to learn it better.
Also, I was teaching a friend of mine from Wales Icelandic and he didn't know any of the grammatical words, he'd never had to use them cause he'd never really learnt English grammar sweatdrop

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

Well, at least the people who do not understand it.

I am really shocked with my English teacher. She makes a lot of mistakes in grammar, spelling and pronounciation. An occasional mistake would be ok, but she makes just far too many, plus she just confuses my class when she lectures about what-could-be-very-easy lessons.

I'm just in 1st year high school, but she has been the worst english teacher I've ever had. Maybe I'm just biased, but I wonder how she even managed to land a job in my school since my school has high standards and all.
