The Door to Death
Im not gonna do that,I just wanted to ask that question for a very long time.

You can stop being anything with in reason. Changing from goth to something else can be quite easy, i should know I was a punk before I turned goth. But I would never change back.

Just stay true to yourself and your desires. You'll be fine.

true goth isn't a style or fad. it's not something you can tangibly feel or see. true goth is a way of thinking. you can always change your frame of mind, but it's really hard to change the way you think. but like anything else, you can do it.

I went into an ungothy phase last year, and I'm now sinking back to being a full goth again.

i think that you can stop being goth on the outside but if your mind is truly dark that even if you change your style your mind will show the nature of which you try to hide from the world and the worlds' judgement.

the only way, i think, that you could quit being a goth, is if you were a poser.
then again, if you were a poser, you can quit just about anything.

what's that supposed to mean?
i know people who are goth and listen to HIM. I'm goth and listen to HIM.
i don't really think that the music you choose to listen to has anything to do with if you're really goth or not. it is a state of mind.
some people just choose to go along with the stereotypes. some don't.
and frankly, you could listen to RAP and still be goth, as long as you think like one.
but i wouldn't recomend that. gonk

That can be argued.

Historically, within the goth community, the term goth exclusively referred to musical preference: "Goths are avid fans of goth-rock". Many prominent goth writers support this, including Mick Mercer, who arguably knows more about the goth culture than anyone in history (he's written and published 4 books about the culture, and has a monthly magazine, that he alone writes, about it). Now, this doesn't mean that goths can't like other kinds of music. It just states that the sole requirement of being a goth, and the sole trait described by the term, is being an avid fan of goth-rock.

The concept that "goth is a state of mind" has only really existed for the last 5 or so years, on a broad scale at least.

Not to say that either statement is wrong or right though. Just bringing in another view of the situation.

stare I agree,
Alot of rap music is still very good

but then again

you can be punk and jam to avril

do you see how self defeating that is?

you might as well be a chav that jams to Mozart

You can quit on the culture itself, but I seriously doubt it'd be so easy to let go of the gothic mentality.
