I use "ilu" on chatrooms. *hides from the chatspeak-police*

It's different to "I love you" because "I love you" is generally between boyfriend/girlfriend, while "ilu" is generally between friends. It's also a good way of distinguishing (sp?) for my friend whether I mean I'm IN love, or if I love him in a friendly way. (He has trouble telling which one I mean.)

Gachetemas
heart

A heart doesn't even look like that. Someone either can't draw or has never seen a real heart. Maybe they got confused with "harp." Or maybe it's an over-simplification or symbol. "I pump you up."

Actually, there are many theories about where the heart symbol came from. One theory is that it is closely related to the sign for Aries and the two circles together (similar to the Olympics sign) showing union and togetherness. In ancient Greece, the heart sign was related to a symbol for the lyre, an attribute of Eros, who was the god of sexual love. There is also a story I read somewhere about how there's a plant that grows in Africa and its seeds are almost perfectly heart shaped (not like heart though, more bold and round, if you know what I mean) and that there was an African tribe that used the seeds for birth control. I think from there comes the idea of having the heart symbol on some p-pills.

Gachetemas

"I stab you with the pointy part of this thing." That's dumb. But there is a cool way to write "LOVE" inside that shape there.

I found that extremely funny and it reminded me of how the arrow through a heart symbolizes (and I quote my Dictionary of symbols by Carl G. Liungman) "directed energy, flow, penetration.." and so it's in fact very sexual xD

Fun fact about the heart symbol: In Sweden it is apparently connected to the behind and it's used to signify a toilet for both sexes. 3nodding

HAHA.
Good abbreviations don't even use, "u".
You have to put the "y", as in, "Ily!"

Not that I do it or anything... sweatdrop

The MoUsY spell-checker
To type "ilu" for "I love you" just shows how much you don't care. If you love someone, say so.

At least putting " heart " for "love" looks nice, especially if you're drawing it on a card.

If you truly loved someone, then could you take the time to write out "I love you!" I mean, love is a passionte emotion, not a game where you try to see, who can shorten the passionte words, "I love you" the most, it makes me sick.

My friends send me comments and stuff on myspace or emails putting ily and that's cool with me. I don't mind it and it makes me smile. They are so awesome but I don't ever use it myself. When talking to my friends on the net I normally put "Love ya". But if I were to tell a guy or a guy to tell me, it better be spelled out correctly. I mean if we are dating and stuff, but if it's just some random guy and he saiys ily or luv ya...I'll just ignore it because I don't tell guys I love you even just as friends. It's weird for me.

Deaf.Screams.
I sort of had a moment of silence for the word 'love' the other day. I got this wonderful singing card on Valentine's Day from my boyfriend but on the inside he wrote 'I luv u'. It was cute and all but it didn't make it seem like he meant it in the way he should have. If you love someone enough you won't mind spelling your words out and also making it seem like you care about the future of the english language.

Not at my school.
It's pretty much just an "L" it's so abbreviated.

I don't like abbreviating " I love you " because it seems like you don't mean it. But I will admit, I do it every now and then to humor my boyfriend. He uses txt tlk. sweatdrop

I agree with a lot of things that were said here about the 'txt tlk' way of saying 'I love you'. It is so much better to write out 'I love you' as opposed to 'ilu' because it shows that you care since you are not using the over-used 'ilu', and are typing it out properly. I honestly don't even get why people type the word 'you' as 'u' when it's just only two letters less! I cannot believe how lazy people are at times.
