A Dictionary Could Be Dangerous

The dictionary sounds like it's a double-edged sword. What about the people that are "smart", but everyone thinks they use those words to make them seem smarter?

I suppose we have to have a certain standard of English before using it. What about the people who are smart? Some of them do use it for that purpose actually...

One of my professors was talking about the use of a thesaurus. She said that she often got papers in that used words with synonyms that would have fit the context, but the words used didn't. Kids try to look smarter by using big words they find in the thesaurus without actually knowing what those words mean.

She read out a few examples, but I'm afraid I've forgotten them. They were quite funny, though.
