Aithera This has been bothering me since I was six, but I forgot the example and I only just remembered it last week.
Okay, so here it is: "her her". As in, "I gave her her apple."
It just sounds so...wrong! Yet how else would you say it?
I'm confused. I never heard of this problem before.... I only know "her" as "her", not two..O_O

I think 'her her' is okay. One 'her' is used as a direct object. While the other is a possessive pronoun. Then again, that's just what I think.

Ah, that's what I thought. It still sounds weird though. Oh well. The english language never won prizes for prettiness.
Thanks for the help!

I think the English language fails to win a lot of prizes. >.>

blaugh at the last post!! *cough*
So following the last subject of research, is it truly grammatically correct to say "had had?" As in, "I had had a massage, but..."

marlyse412 blaugh at the last post!! *cough* So following the last subject of research, is it truly grammatically correct to say "had had?" As in, "I had had a massage, but..." I believe so. I use it, and a lot of people I know use it, and I've seen a lot of people use it, so I assume it's okay.

I knew for certain that "had had" was right, but for whatever reason I was very confused about "her her".
Maybe it's because "had had" is more common, or something.

That's true.
Hrm.
O Wise Muse, where art thou to guide us in our journeys through grammatically correct speech?

It sounds correct to me.
'I gave her her apple.'
May not look right, but say it out and it sounds fine...then again, I'm not always right. :S
