I'm just anxious to learn of the motives.

Yesterday at about 12:30 I had heard of 20 dead. Not two hours later it was a confirmed 22, then not even fifteen minutes after that, a confirmed 33, including the first gunman.

The deaths are scattered, they aren't all in one location, and there are two gunmen. They don't know - at least from the last I heard - if they were working in tandem. They had only found one dead at first along with the first gunman, but soon after that was when they learned there was a second gunman and many more dead.

It's insane enough if they were working together, but so much more frightening if they aren't.

It only just happened. And, unfortunately, you don't tend to hear of things until disaster.

Update and correction on my post:

It is indeed one gunman.

The way everything was laid out they assumed it to be two, but they only found the one who killed himself.

Apparently, he was a South Korean who was very antisocial. He was 23, a senior, was going to graduate. He's been the states since he was 8. He comes from a decent family. His parents are dry cleaners, and his sister graduated from Princeton. He was very quiet and wouldn't talk to anyone.

The one building for classrooms is so full of blood and the mess of the massacre has, therefore, been shut down for the rest of the year.

I can't imagine how traumatizing this must be for these students. They have three weeks of classes left and finals yet. It's so sad how they've had to deal with this and how Cho Seung-Hui [that's his name] felt the desire to do this. It's just unfathomable.

my mother called me down to watch them talk about it on tv. i honestly don't give two shits about some shooting down there in america. people die as a result of gang violence in massive numbers all the time. the media doesn't take any notice there. it's only when middle and upper class violence takes place that they choose to boost their ratings with it.

so what did i do while i watched the footage? inwardly laugh at the fat cops trying to run with assault rifles. that s**t was priceless.

i know this is a tragedy, but personally, i am tired of all this media coverage about it. what about the victim's family and friends? it's just torurting to them to put them through this.

Yeah it hadn't even been that long and I was already sick of hearing about it this morning. But it boosts ratings. rolleyes

It is indeed very depressing to hear about this. I have just learned about it this morning when I turned on the radio, and the first thought that came to mind was this was another event simular to Columbine. It is indeed far worse, and I was practically speechless as I listened to the students who were in the classrooms on the news. It is also sad to see that people here in America think it is alright to take out some kind of pain on students and classmates.

In England we're getting told the guy was jilted and lined up the people and shot them. And some jumped out of the window.

My friend said that you can get guns anywere in America. And I think that is the problem. She even hear you could get them from a bank just for starting acount. And the cops are a problem too cause the first shooting was at 7 and then the next shoot was at 9 with all the cops there thats just sad.

The reason for so much coverage is that this occurred in a place that parents send their children or people opt to enroll at that they would naturally assume to be safe. It's not some run of the mill gang violence. Sure such occurrences are horrible too, but like what someone already mentioned, it's fairly common. It's not everyday a facility of education is plagued with something like this. That's why it's deemed important enough for so much coverage.

If you're all so sick of hearing about it, stop watching the news for a while instead of being complainers. With an occurrence such as this so fresh at hand, it's obvious that there are worse things than hearing about the same event everytime you turn on the news. There are people in this country who are concerned when things like this happen, and it's for those people that this stuff is aired.

Depends on the state, really. Most gun-control laws are regulated by state governments.

In some states (particularly those in the South), guns are inexpensive and easy to find; many of these states have lax laws about carrying them on your person, or obtaining licenses to use them.

In other states, guns are very expensive and difficult to get. These states may have long and difficult systems for obtaining licenses to use the weapons, and some have laws which strictly forbid you from carrying a weapon on you at any time.

And I think that is the problem.

Easy access to guns isn't the problem, it just allows the possibility for other problems.

Blaming guns for inspiring violence is like blaming windows for inspiring robberies.

That's not the police's fault. They couldn't move in. It would have been dangerous and stupid to have done so. By sending in armed officers to shoot down one target, they risk their own men getting shot, as well as risk bystanders getting shot in the crossfire. By moving in prematurely, without a good plan of action, you risk more lives.

In light of the recent shootings at Virginia Tech, I would like to request that people click the link from the icon below and light a virtual candle in memory of the victims. Although this tragedy does not personally affect me, I request this action as a token of sympathy for those affected by this tragic loss of life. May the victims of this crime rest in peace.
