Okay, here I must make an interjection.
In the US, Eggman and Robotnik are two separate entities.
SEGA of America did not properly translate the name. In the Japanese versions of every Sonic game, he was Eggman.
However, because the original US game's handbook called him 'Robotnik', that's where all of the American media took it. This does not, however, make them the same person. The Robotnik of SatAM and Archie DIED. He was replaced by "Robo Robotnik", a mechanized clone from another dimension. Robo Robotnik's metallic body was destroyed, and he transferred his consciousness to a new body, which looked much more like an egg, thus Eggman and Robotnik are not the same person. Robotnik has only appeared in one game, and that was his SatAM appearance. (Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.)
