Vikteren waited until the mortal--Kain--was gone from the room before he answered her. "I do not require an apology from you," he said, slowly, choosing his words with care. "You have done nothing to warrant regret. I am--glad--very much so--that you ran. That you struggled." His palms were very nearly healed, and he reached out, with the very tips of his fingers, the parts that remained clean of blood, and touched her hand. "I wish that you had not been hurt," the vampire said, softly. "But I am glad that you are still with us. Antha, why have you never fought him, before tonight, when he came to claim you?"

Antha gave one soft sigh, diverting her eyes to watch the floor. "There is nothing I can do to protect myself from Sleet. I cannot compete with him physically and the umbra are useless for anything short of killing him. Running only makes things worse, because I cannot elude him for long." Generally, when people got in his way, Sleet killed them. So Antha had decided to merely stand still and accept her punishment until Khayman, Zero, Singe, Nicholas, and whoever else wished to help could drag him back to her basement and he could pay for her suffering. It was the only way they knew how to do things. "One day, my family will cease to exist. When that happens, Sleet will be dead before he can blink. But for now, I can do nothing but take his abuse, and you would be wise not to stand in his way. Every time he is thwarted, he gets angrier. The angrier he becomes, the more people die and the more I bleed."

+Rotting Lunacy+ Antha gave one soft sigh, diverting her eyes to watch the floor.
The vampire laughed--a short, humorless bark, with not a trace of amusement in it. "What are you trying to tell me, Antha? That I should not even try to protect you? I cannot--no more than the tides can keep themselves from rising, or--or the dawn can keep itself from coming. If it means Sleet's wrath falls upon my head, I would risk it--if it meant you could walk free and unhurt for one more day, I would lay down my life--or what passes for it--for you." Vikteren shook his head, impatient with himself. "Do not ask me to turn a blind eye to Sleet's actions."

For a moment, Antha just stared at him. There were others who protested Sleet's actions, who tried to make him stop. They reasoned that his treatment of Antha was irrational. Khayman threatened him with war between their covens. But none, not even Nicolae, were willing to fight him to keep her unharmed. They passed it off as she did, reminded themselves that he would not kill her and they would exact revenge anyways. Before she even thought about it, Antha kissed him. It was brief, for she withdrew when she returned to her senses, but it was not guarded or reserved like others she had given. A kiss of scalding passion. "You would kill me," she said very simply, her pale cheeks blushing nearly crimson for a few moments as she became aware of her own actions, "If you were to lay down your life merely to spare me a day of Sleet's torture, only two things could come of it. Either I would kill Sleet, effectively killing myself and every poor soul that bears Mayfair blood, or I would go entirely mad and, in all likelihood, kill myself." She touched his hand again very lightly, though this touch was not tentative. It matched the sudden and very uncommon seriousness in her eyes that for once made her look her age, older even, if not saner. "Promise me you would never do something so foolish. It would be the end of us both."
