Ozumou Don;t forget, Country, Jazz, blues, Dixieland Celtic, song hall/vaudaville, Operette, Opera, And that is only in America. let alone "world music. " and a lot of those Genres you mentioned are quite closely related I don't think thier has been that great an expansion. dude, Em was jsut giving some examples of different music genres not saying they were the only ones.

" and a lot of those Genres you mentioned are quite closely related I don't think thier has been that great an expansion. I have to agree with Manky here but still. Dixieland and Jazz as such weren't full prevalent until the 1920s. Blues predated that, but it wasn't a mainstream form of music until a little later. It was more or less songs of the slaves, it didn't really break into caucasian culture until much later after it was discovered. And I hate to say it, but there has been a massive variation in the genres in the last 50 years. The Progressive period from the 1960s to the late 70s was a great expansion on the rock genre. Disco in the 70's and early 80s, variation again. Then in the 60s you still have the emergence of the nihilistic Punk genre. The Punk genre's sound in general has evolved so much from the beginning of it. Listen to The Clash and then compare it with say...a late Bad Religion album. Music evolves. With the invention of the synthesizer in the 80's, music was revolutionised until people got sense and did away with the junk. In the 80s we saw a major emergence of the Metal genre with Metallica and Motley Crew, only to name two, hitting the scene. AC/DC also predating this era were the forerunners of the metal to come. Metal itself has spawned many sub-genres from it's birth. Each very diverse. Compare Nightwish to Opeth, there is variation, a large amount. The early 90's gave way to grunge rock, something maybe not as varied as most, but a degenerative form of punk and metal. Nirvana had a unique sound never has it been replicated. /endrant

All I am saying is, I don't think we ( or at least I ) know enough about Genres of music pre-1900 to make such a bold claim.

There would have been differnt styles of music even then, but not as many as you see today.

Indeed. With the development of electronic equipment - synthesizors, aplifiers, sound manipulation, electric everything, etc - The scope and variation of modern music has many more possibilities than the hand made and manipulated instruments of old. Not only can you change the style in which you play the instrument, you can change completley from the way it should naturally sound.
In the old days, we were restricted to our own abilities. Now we can manipulate every part of every musical piece to sound like whatever the hell we want. So yes, in this way music has evolved very quickly... the past 30 years perhaps?
Now, music is pretty much limitless. Try telling a peasant from the 1600s that you can make a guitar sound like seagulls. They'd burn you at the stake.
For some reason this brings me to the conclusion that The Bloc Party are pretty awesome. Anyone else like them?

Ozumou All I am saying is, I don't think we ( or at least I ) know enough about Genres of music pre-1900 to make such a bold claim. Sure we can. Music has always been varied, and as Emma pointed out, music can evolve quicker because human limits are no longer an obstacle. We're bound to get more variations today as we can manipulate sound more and more. Bloc Party? Yeah pretty orsm. I like Helicopter the best. Probably because it's on FIFA. >_>

No way man. They're not real British, especially the front man, what's his name?... *looks it up* Kele Okereke. He's so not British that he's black.
Although he was born there...
And the guitarist guy, Russel Lissack is his name, His hair is too cool to be English. I mean even if he does have bad teeth, which I suspect he doesn't, who cares? His hair is awesome!
Although one of the others does look very english. I think it might be the bassist.
Oh, and when I said "I think they're all yummy" I meant the songs. 3nodding
(You know, it's from that add from ages ago, where the kid goes "Mum likes soylife yoghurt the best. Dad likes soylife milk the best. Lucy like soylife custard the best. I THINK THEY'RE ALL YUMMY"
GET IT? HUH? HUUUUUUH?! )

Korn's latest album is stuck in my head. I wish I could go to their concert, but the bastards at work are going and I can not get the night off to go as well. And I was offered a free-ish ticket.

Well of course, but I was just saying...
Sigur Ros would be good. They're so pretty ^_^ But I can't really afford to go to Melbz and see every single band I like. Damn this living in a country town. We get a few good people. Karnivool were here the other day but I didn't see them. Once again becase I'm poor. Will be going to see The Herd in a couple of weeks. They're one of the few Aussie hip-hop acts I can stand.
Anyway, seeing every great band would be awesome... but I can probably only afford one or 2 trips a year.
I had a dream last night about De Facto having a secret gig in Albury (For you uneducated people, De Facto is Cedric and Omar's side gig that they started before The Mars Volta) It was the best bloody dream I had in ages. Cedric bought me a coffee even... hahaha I get it. Hot coffee lol It's weird though, because I haven't even listened to them for a couple of weeks.
