The dream of Tsuande's continues where the akatsuki attacks the teams by separating the experts from the weaklings then attacks them.

Choji, Ino, Shikamaru and the akatsuki help the two boys escape a horrible fate then the Ino-shika-cho trio meet up with Kiba's group and are determined to calm Lee down who is upset that Neji went off on his own and that Might Guy is in trouble. Naruto is with Neji and just heard a story from the masked man who seems to have ties to the Hyuga clan. Sasuke and Sakura have decided to return to the leaf village to give a report.

Naruto has his chakra energy points rendered useless by the masked man as the masked man goes with Neji to show him something. Meanwhile Sasuke is attacked by the akatsuki and gets hit with a poisoned tail.

The leaf genin meet up save for Neji and Naruto. They are faced with 100 puppets as a test. If they choose to go after their captains, they prioritize comradeship over their mission, however if they choose to battle the puppets, then they prioritize the mission and prove the akatsuki right.

After regaining composure, Naruto goes to help his friends defeat the 100 puppets solo and then the gang all agree to save their captains thus proving that they will do things both ways. They honor the rules, but they honor their friendship too.

Neji's reanimated father shows everyone where the captains are, speaks with Neji for a little bit, then departs for the afterlife. Just as everyone was returning to the leaf, a huge explosion occurs in the village nearby.

After being fired from being a Lieutenant of the Leaf Police force, Sasuke has a meeting with Danzo who sends him to Orochimaru, thus turning Sasuke into a rogue shinobi.
