Gale Hawthorne had to grow up quick.

Gale is a creature of devotion. His top priority has always been his family. When his father died, he took more time to sneak out into the woods and hunt for the benefit of his family--a crime punishable by beatings or death. It's during one of these hunts that he meets and befriends Katniss.

Angry, he's always talking in the woods about how things need to change even though there is no avenue for change in Panem. To challenge Snow and his rules is to invite death.

He is full of fire and rage. He sees things in black and white and believes in winning at any cost. He is a hunter at heart and he understands the nature of prey.

Backstory:

After his father died in the same mining accident that Katniss father died, he became the breadwinner of the family. Already the size of a grown stallion, he started to hunt for his family while his mother did laundry to help. Having three younger siblings has made him very responsible.

When Katniss is forced into the 74th Hunger Games, he's bound by his promise to stay behind and make sure that her sister Prim and her mother survive. He watches the whole love story of Katniss and Peeta unfold on screen before the entire world, unable to do anything about it.

Things spiral after she comes home and they are never quite the same. After taking a beating with the new enforced rules of District 12, he becomes rebellious.

When the arena went dark, he tried to save as many of his district as he could by escaping the bombing. However, he still holds the guilt of not being able to save 9/10th's of his District.

Meaning of (name): "Bane of my existence" or "nightmare". Like a haunting dream, something you are exceptionally afraid of whether or not you have a reason. She was so named by a french fur trapper that viewed her.

More than a little odd, Bete is as kind as can be but she doesn't really know how to act around others. She's always lonely and doesn't really know how to talk to anyone--never having had the chance.

Eager to find a place where she belongs, Bete tries too hard at everything.

Backstory:

She remembers hearing her mother's voice in her baskets, but by the times her basket opened she hadn't heard her mother's voice in days. Alone and unaware of how to do anything, she basically raised herself--teaching herself to fly and learning to eat whatever she can find.

Not knowing a home, she flew wherever she felt. People though looked on her with loathing and fear. It was a French fur trapper that saw her and made the sign against evil at her. He called her "Bete Noire" and she took the name not knowing that it means "thing one fears the most."
