Sorry I missed this.
I tend to feel the main reason many people hate furs, is because they bring it upon themselves.
Think about it.
How would you feel if someone simply said "I don't like furries" and got verbally attacked by a swarm of people trying to "Educate" you?
How would you feel if you were told about a fan club that draws fan art of your favorite anthro animal characters you grew up with, only to have those child-hood memories ruined forever the moment you accidentally come across fur porn of those characters because you didn't expect to see that, and didn't think to turn on a strict filter.
How would you like being attacked by all sides the moment you try to help a fandom deeply in trouble by giving a healthy dose of positive criticism? The fandom claims it's not all about sex (and it's not) but willingly will fight to the death to defend it's porn. It has a persecution mentality and gets easily butt-hurt the moment someone doesn't like a furry thing. Within the fandom itself having an opinion against parts of the fandom is considered thought-crime.
How would you feel if this pretentious group of people decided to auto label all the things anthro animal as furry and force that bad assocation on you, who happens to be an artist who enjoys drawing anthros but is not part of the fur fandom?
Also, how would you feel if the moment you look into this online group, and you come across the main forums, you saw that the quiet majority is drowned out by minority loud perverts who jump down the throats of those who ask the perverted individuals to try to be modest and keep their sexual kinks to themselves?
Most of the people who bring up points against furries bring up things furs do not want to hear.
That aside though I never worry too much about people finding out I am a furrie. I have nothing to be ashamed of. Part of the reason so many furs have to hide being a fur is because they make it a point to plaster their sexual likes all over the internet. So Google forbid someone close track down their online persona, and find out about all the kinks they are into.
If you have modesty with your sexual preferences and fetish's, and you don't act like a stereotypical butt-hurt furfag, than you have no reason to really hide what you are. You are part of a community that is a fan of an art form. If someone cannot accept that and want to stereotype you based on what a bunch of anonymous-fags or a bunch of badly put together tv show say, oh well. That kind of stupidity is not worth worrying over, or caring about.
That of course deals with people who actually hate furries not to be confused with online trolls who pretend to because they get a delicious butt-hurt response over half the time.

Well there are countless reasons people can make up on the spot for hating pretty much anything. The real problem is generally ignorance and un-acceptance. People don't know anymore then others tell them, and most people won't stand around long enough for someone to explain it. Some people say they don't like it because it's close to bestiality, others just hear the bad rep furries get from things like CSI and other such things, a lot of people simply don't understand it, and because of that they hate it and fear it. Humanity is innately flawed in the fact we have the ability to reason. Although this is what separates man from beast it also makes humans separate themselves further, black and white, furry and furry hater, racist and homophobic. Honestly I'd say humanity would be better off as animals.
I was always the wierd kid in school, not always the complete freak everyone hated, just the kid that was a bit off, the one that never really fit in waith any of the groups, he just hung out with a few people or just kept to himself, you've probably seen kids like me. The ones who sit in the corner of the class and don't talk unless you talk to them. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just a bit different. People have always seemed to hate me when they see me, but when they start talking to me they see I'm a pretty nice guy. It's the same with furries, people just see what they want to see, but if they start talking to us they see we're not all the crazy freaks that the media/internet/etc. makes us out to be. I still haven't told anyone I know that I'm a furr, my mom doesn't know, neither does my gf. I know most people won't understand. But I'm patient.
So to Little Kanade, about talking to your friends about it, you wan't my advice? Just try explaning it to them, but put it in another topic, maybe just start asking them what they think about different fetishes then bring up furries, gauge reactions, and maybe even do a little explaining, then you can see whether to tell them or not.
signed anyway, just putting in my bit, and remember, if you ever see the kid in the corner who is just a little bit off....talk to him/her, who knows, they might become your best friend wink Zylo the Wolfbane

Thanks that is some good suggestions... I feel we are in a similar situation. Yea I have tried just bringing Furry up when we talk about random stuff but when I did one of the people there was VERY "Opinionated" haha so I kinda just let it go... but my other friend seamed more accepting... maybe I will try bringing it up again when my opinionated friend isn't around and see what happens.

Sanguvixen Shard Of Ronin I don't think it's as complex as all this. People need a scapegoat, it's been jews and gays and blacks and communists and so on, and that's just here in Europe. Everyone needs someone to hate, and we're the easy target of the age. Small in number, easily alienated, and most importantly, 'different.' We're the token 'wrong' thing with the world, we just have to wait this out. For Googles sake don't ever compare what we deal with to what the jews/blacks/gays/communists dealt with, okay? There is no comparison.
People target us because it is fun to do so. It's like trolling twitards. Troll them and then you'll understand why people troll furries. People enjoy getting a dramatic and butt-hurt response. Especially on the internet. I do agree with Sanguvixin in this, we have nothing in common with the jews/blacks/etc. we were never slaves, and we haven't been slaughtered because of our furriness, so we can't even compare. Of course if the world lasts long enough and people remain as ignorant and judgmental as they are we might just well see a furry holocaust. I hope this doesn't happen, because that just proves that no matter what humanity is destined to make the same mistakes over and over again.
signed also OOC here, Sanguvixin that's some amazing avi art in your siggy, did you draw that? Zylo the Wolfbane
