I just sort of waited for the appropriate animal to "click". It took me some time, too - for a long while I attempted to develop a fictional creature, sort of a chimera gargoyle, attempting to merge traits in nature I felt I identified with. I'm tall, lanky / flexible, long-limbed and really enjoy climbing, so I aimed for a leggy beast and prehensile feet and tail with other features I could associate with myself.
However, eventually I realized that the opossum suited me well in both physical behavior and demeanor and swiftly grew fond and attached to the species. Thus I simply incorporated myself into an alternate form. She's an avatar to represent me in a fandom I enjoy, not really a character, and as is such actually does resemble me physically in every way - body shape, weight, height, you name it. I don't fantasize what I'd like to look like, 'cause I'm perfectly satisfied with being myself - scrawny, a constantly hungry opportunistic scrounger (ridiculously fast metabolism, I couldn't gain weight if I wanted to), heavy sleeper, a bit mood-swinging (JAW GAPE BLEH), avoidance complex (playing dead), etc.
If I think something highly fantastical would be awesome, I tend to incorporate it into a character instead of trying to pretend that I'm fantastic myself.
I suppose I might be considered something of a nerd, but I don't consider that negative. I'm certainly not attempting to butter myself up, either. I'm just showcasing myself. s**t, my fursona is an animal most commonly seen splattered on the road, in the trash can, or gaping and drooling in terror. I didn't even begin to consider trying to improve myself; just what worked for me and that I felt a kinship with the opossum family as well as primates. I know I'm human perfectly well, wouldn't want to be any other way, except maybe a monkey instead of an ape - hence her being a "monkey" primate.

If he wants to be a foxy cigarette you should let him be! Not everyone fits the stereotype of just one species! mad Maybe he doesn't want to be the eagle in this ad. No, he may sometimes feel like being a foxy cigarette. Maybe something like this... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Misc/FurFags.jpg(Crappy edit, but it's old and I've gotten better since then.)
