yup, its official, Corporate Gaia's gone batshit insane, 'luxury' items huh? yeah, all i saw were the prices and said screw it, not even gonna bother cause if i cant afford it, then by all that is holy on Gaia i don't deserve to look at it (sadly, some rich Gaians would probally pull their heads out of their asses long enough to tell me that), and the new shop is CG's uber-shitty attempt at making the shops culturally diverse, if thats what they were trying to do, but thats just my opinion

*insert Corporate Gaia rant*

Aye, that comes from the viking settlements/ icelandic trading in the dark ages, doesn't it?

Like in the Jorvik centre in Scarborough ( a seaside town nearish me ) apparently it was named so because of 'Scarthy's borough' as in the dude who owned it.

Also, there's a historical theory that the vikings or other people from that area reached America before the spanish and the europeans, but never explored far into it. *nods* don't take my word on it, but i think it's right -heh

Yes. Yes it does.
:]
Also, there are some villages in Britian whose names end with "thorpe" I think it was was. Which is from the word "þorp" wich means village.
Also most english family names that end with "son" like Johnson and such, originate from the viking name system that instead of having family last names, everyone has their father's first name as a last name.
This is still used in Iceland,
My last name for example is Vilhjálmsdóttir. Which means Vilhjálms-daughter. And my brothers last name is Vilhjámsson. Or yah know. The son of Vilhjálm. Which is of course our fathers first name.

I'm drowning you all in random facts that no one has any interest in knowing!!!

And oh yes.
The whole who got there first.
I would take your word for it, but I've been believing that theory since a was a child so its too late!
Seriously, in schools over here the whole America thing is ussualy put like this "So they think that this guy discovered Americe, but I think we all know the vikings got there first! Hohohohohhooo"
Mostly because Icelanders have roots in the whole viking thing
and our national pride and egos are ussualy far too large for such a small country.
I am a fine example of this large ego habit as I bet you have pretty much guessed by now.
xD
But at least I admit it.

D:
Yeah. Those items are far too expensive.
(I myself could propobly just pimp out some art since I can sell it at decent prices and afford them soon enough but I've never really been interested in gold making here)

But silly you. Rich snobs would never tell you that you couldnt look at it.
No.
They would tell you too look and admire what you can never have and envy them for it, and when you would look envious enough they would look at you with a sence of pity and superiority that tells you with a single look that they know they are better then you and you will never reach their tall pedistal of utter faboulusness and then, they would walk away, head held high taking their glowing-with-beauty items with them, leaving you only with the empty feeling of knowing that you will never own nor see anything of such beaty and grace ever again.
That is until the next rich person comes along and repeats the game until you are left a cold and bitter person.

Unless you're like me and just dont find the new rich as life items all that appealing.
:]

Aye, near my uni we've got a 'Scunthorpe' :3

And there' s nothing wrong with having some natinal pride, esp when it comes to history wink
[lord knows I flap around my englishness like it's going out of fashion sweatdrop lol]

I find the viking stuff fascinating though i don't know very much about them since we haven't studied them properly since primary school.
Genrally in England it seems that vikings interacted with the natives in three ways:
#1 - "Oh s**t it's them again! RUN AWAY!!!"
#2 - once they integrated they founded pretty much all the culture up until the end of the dark ages and the medieval renaissance/Roman-christian revival or something.
#3 - they made flipping awesome coffins/tombs

In fact, come to think of it my/our whole culture's founded on being invaded again and again. We only had peace after 1066 and the french took over (i reckon teh spanish amada doesn't quite count). Methinks the British Empire was some sort of inferiority complex to make up for a mellenium of being other people's b***h XD

And rich items don't interest me unles sthey're worth the price you pay (eg evolving items with a BAZILLION diferent forms.)

The shop is probably an attempt at a gold sink; something to get a lot of gold out of the Gaian economy to help prevent inflation.

However, if they're going to use a shop for that, shouldn't they put items that are, you know, worth the price?

Maybe that's why it seems America is always compensating for something. O:
We've got the shame of being the b***h of Britain who apparently was with everyone else at some point.
Damn you, giving us your complex. D<

Ok,ok just let 'em have it, just keep the indies!! that's where all the tobacco and sugar n' crap is! *flail*"
so...yup. There ya go. I was proud of myslef for finding it out cos for aboiut a decade we wondered who the hell 'Admiral Rodney' was.

Oh Britian.
You hussy.
Iceland was Denmarks b***h.
But then world war II came along and we were all "Screw you Denmark!"
and just sorta made ourself independant since they were too busy dealing with the war stuff to do anything about it.
We are such bitches really.
Also, as bad as it sounds. The world war=Great for Ieland.
Seriously. All history classes here in Iceland are basicly "So life was difficult and seriously lacking in awesome. And then the war came and all was indjected with awesome and our women went frolicking with british and american soldiers."
So you english people changed our women into darn hussies!

I think our naming system rock. Also there is none of that change-your-last-name when you get married nonsene.
I also get a kick out of my name abroad since noone ever pronounces it right
:]
Unfortunetly my parents gave me a first and middle name that works in most countries so I only get a kick out of my last name.
Although everyone says the name "Anna" differently then they are suposed to, since the "A" is pronounce differently here.

Seriously!
That new shop Dernier Cri?

The owner's foreign language is actualy Icelandic!
Which I totaly am
xD
And his name, Brennivin is actualy a rather strong Icelandic alcohol.
Which makes most foreigners react something like
"Oh dear god are you trying to kill me!?!?"

But yah.
The words ,Heilsa, Svalr, Gott Kvöld, Já, neitun, Milljón,
are all Icelandic.

Btw.
Gaia is totaly butchering my native language with bad spelling and grammar...should I feel offended?

I bet they're using the google tranlator thing.
Which is horrible since the appearantly translate things like
"Ég er hýr og skoppandi af gleði" as "Holy s**t I'm gay!"
D: While it actualy means more like "I'm happy and cheerful" or something simular.
The word Svalr is missing a letter D:

wow.. thats kinda.. i dont know.. cool or soemthing nowwhere near cool.. haha ^_^ anyway.. i think gaia is jut trying to be funny.. please dont be offended.. ^_^

Don't worry.
I'm not actualy serious about the offended thing,
takes a whole lot to offend me
since I have a fair amount of humor
and dont mind making fun of myself.
Or my mother.
Yo moma jokes dont work on me,
since I'm ussualy far better at insulting my mother then anyone else.

you do know that at some point in its history, most civilizations (present and past) where another civ/country's b***h at some point right?

take the allmighty Roman Empire for example.
started out as a little village of the outsiders other tribes shunned, they went to the Romans and the Romans welcomed them with open arms and guess what happened? the Romans grew to be the only Superpower in Europe around the height of its glory and got all the meanie tribes back for f***king with them.

Caesar actually had his troops build a bridge out of nearby trees so he and his army could cross a river that had too strong of a current and was too deep to walk through and on the other side of the river were (i think) a Nord/Viking tribe or something that basically sat there, watching as Caesar's legions built a 30-ft bridge out of trees (lol, Lincoln Logs >_<) THAT ACTUALLY DID ITS JOB and when Caesar got across, the Nords/Vikings (whichever they were, cant remember...) hauled a** in the other direction, despite the fact that they had a HUGE advantage in numbers, i think they had like 400,000 warriors or something but when they saw Caesar build a 30-ft bridge in 10 friggin days, they said, 'OH SHI- *whole tribe collectively shat bricks* RUUUUUNNNN!!!'

so yeah, Caesar was able to scout/explore the enemy territory while encountering ABSOLUTELY NO RESISTANCE WHATSOEVER

then when he was done, he and his troops crossed the bridge back to Roman territory and dismantled the bridge, cant remember the name of the river though >_> but History Channel FTFW! XD

and yes i know that i left out quite a few historical gaps, but think of this as the abridged version (no pun intended >_>)

also, apparently FireFoxs' spellcheck think Nord is misspelled /facepalm
