I think people should be punished in some form if they do it in a public place, because something like that would definitely scar a lot of people pretty badly.

Jail however, is way too much.

Is anybody reading my posts? Jail is the best way to get these people help. It's not usually even a normal term sentence.

Why would you send someone who has tried to end their life to a place that in itself makes people want to commit suicide???

I don't think any of you know what jail or prison are like nowadays. they aren't going to send a mentally unstable person to a holding facility where they're going to get raped, or hurt in any way. Most prisons now have very good programs to help council these kinds of people. You can even get a college degree while in prison now. If they are mentally unstable the kind of place they would go to would be more like a paid vacation. My uncle went to prison for 2 years, for selling drugs, and he could get pizza whenever he wanted, they had plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, more than enough to keep you occupied and happy. Not all prisons are as bad as people seem to think, and they aren't going to send a suicidal person to one that's terrible.

Our prisons are sucking up so much of our money it's ridiculous. They are digging a hole, and quickly. They might make some money off of short term holdings, but they aren't making any kind of profit.

Have you ever been to jail?? OR prison???

How can you say jail is the best way? They are taking these ppl away from family, friends, and putting them in a place with ppl they don't know. The don't need jail then need to be in a place where they can be understood.

I have had quite a few family members who have been in both. I have visited them, seen what they are like. My uncle is currently in prison and he agrees that it is the best place for him. I have another uncle who was in prison for a year, and it was like a paid vacation for him. He could get whatever food he wanted, when he wanted. He had full access to the internet. Had cable in his "cell". He was allowed to have visitors any day of the week.

Taking the people away from their families? They were trying to do that in the first place, so that's not really a legitimate argument for this.

Jail IS a place with people who will understand. They aren't going to be put with a bunch of criminals. They will be put with other people like them. They will receive the kind of help they need.

I have had depression issues my entire life. I have tried to kill myself on two occasions. I never once wanted to be around people I knew. It was much easier to talk to a stranger, someone who was unbiased and uninvolved.

Have YOU ever been to jail or prison? How do you know it makes them want to commit suicide? I have known plenty of people who have gone to jail or prison, received the help that they needed, and come out, happier than when they went in.

You are both assuming that these people will be stuck in a terrible prison with murderers. They won't. they will be put in a nice facility, with quite a few freedoms. There they can be watched, receive the help they need, and hopefully return in a few short months. As I have said, these cases are usually given a "parole" sentence. Where every month, or two weeks (however they decide to do it), they will be up for a parole hearing.

i'm thinking in most states in the u.s. (and maybe in other industrialized countries), committing suicide is a crime, and if you try (obviously failing), they can put you in jail, mostly as a form of prevention to keep you from trying again and potentially succeeding. i think that's getting left out and it's possibly impotant to say because maybe people don't know that (and you mostly don't find out until you actually do it)
how do i know this? i learned it in a mental health system, where if someone feels you're high risk for suicide (which will scar the people left behind more than tax dollars will anyone else), they can report you to authorities, who can put you in a cell to monitor your behavior until they can put you somewhere that can help you better or you stabalize where you're no longer a risk to yourself.
