Also, for more clarification, when using a color, for instance "aka"(red) it is in a noun state. When you add the "i" making it "akai" it has then turned into an adjective, meaning it's used to describe something's color. So it's not just "is red" it's becomes" ~ red X". X being the thing being described. So for this let X be a car. So it's not "aka kuruma" It is "akai kuruma"; a red car.
There are two types of adjectives, the "na" and the "i". From what I recall, most colors are "i" adjectives. Dictionaries will clarify if one is either or.
