Another group of Hongshan? While some of the tension faded from Nuria, it didn't dissipate altogether. While more Hongshan was a better thing than an attempt to invade, the water they have was already stretched. One downside to sharing water equally--regardless of whether she supported the decision or not--was that the more numbers the Firekin gained, the less water there was for all. So perhaps this was not an immediate threat, but it could certainly still be a problem.
"We have had several Hongshan come to us in the past," she added to Kinja and Ute's words.

Tswana flicked her tail, ears low as she once again felt like all she could do was listen to the other lions in her group. This irritated her a bit, and yet she didn't speak up. It upset her to remember many things, including herself before the Nergui. Or at least before her first, failed escape attempt, where her last nephew was killed. She had changed a lot, and now she felt like a weak, meek lioness.
I will be better once fed, once I get my strength back. She thought hopefully. She missed the old Tswana, the one that was fearless, strong, the one that would have been right up there with the others, dealing with the firekin. But today's Tswana was content with hanging back and observing. Her common tongue was good enough, so she actually managed to understand what was being said, so there was that. At least she could listen.
When Kinja spoke, Tswana managed to make out something about who you say, and no need to be wary, which she wasn't sure she totally believed in. Of course they needed to be wary! But then another lioness spoke, and Tswana's ears perked up. Something about several Hongshan in the past. Did she mean the others were here? They were in the right place?
That was enough to make Tswana pull ahead a bit, not to join those who went to meet with the firekin, but just so she could hear better.
--
As more lions went to join the greeting group, Kalama decided she honestly did not are what Spaki seemed to think, and shot out to join them as soon as Veru moved ahead. She was not going to be kept out of the loop because of what Moto'Spaki thought!
Veru stopped short, but she continued on. At least she had the decency to stay behind the ones who seemed to be 'leading', which was Kinja and two more lionesses. That was fine with her, Kalama didn't really like to talk. And the Hongshan didn't really seem to know how to talk properly anyways. "Maybe we should take them in and guard them till the Regents are back." She mused out loud, flicking her tail.
Spaki scowled, disappointed at himself for allowing Kalama to 'escape' to the other group. He listened to Tarsa, and shrugged. "I don't think it is a trap. That would be foolish of them at this point." He spoke loudly enough for the rest who had stayed behind to hear if they wished. The group that had gone just kept getting bigger, and even then, they hadn't gone so far ahead that they couldn't be quickly joined by the rest. The white lion was also certain more and more would start showing up, as it wasn't every day that there was such excitement in the lands.
Besides, a trap was unlikely simply because it would be stupid. And hard to pull off in such a place. The other Hongshan hadn't even arrived in a very good condition, so Spaki was confident the firekin gathered here could handle it.

Keahilani left his sister's side, going toward the larger group. He arrived just in time to hear Kalama's proposal, nodding. "I agree with Kalama. Even if we're not all guards... We're FIREKIN! We're the toughest thing in this desert beyond the rocks!" He then scowled. "But where would we keep them?"
His eyes passed over the gathered Hongshan, listening to their words. And then they landed on the lone female of the group, and for some reason... He was stricken. He wasn't sure why, either. By the standards he'd been raised on, she didn't seem anything to him to look at, and yet she did. "I'd be happy to volunteer myself, regardless, to help guard them."

Ute was getting a bit annoyed with the groups inability to remain in position. Already voices were perking up behind her and they weren't in the second group. She flicked her ears at Kalama and lowered her head to her; "I think that would be best.... Should we take them to where the others are?" She was referring to the Hogoshan quarters. She lifted her head and looked behind and towards the pride; towards everyone. She narrowed her eyes at the incoming Firekin.
"I suppose we shall lead them there... but what about the crowd?" She turned back to the small group that was with her and then looked across to the strangers. "Is that a reasonable request. To be led to a safe place and wait. There is shade and we can probably offer some help for your wounds." She said, knowing that raw paw pads were something horrid to deal with. "I will also guard you all... for your protection and the protection of my pride."

"It would be best if we didn't swarm them," Nuria agreed in a biting tone. Her tail flicked against the sand irritably, annoyed that their greeting party was steadily growing. So much for a small group. "The Red Quarter would be good. We could take them there, ask our Hongshan about them if nobody recognizes them before we get there, and keep them under guard." Though they had joined the Firekin, 'our' Hongshan seemed something of a neccessary distinction, given the strangers claimed to be Hongshan themselves.

Roho was eternally grateful at Suditi's appearance and gave the striking red and black female a short nod to express it. The Hongshan female had never been good at expressing her emotions but the female who she considered a sister had never seemed to have had much trouble.
"You're right." She spoke after a moment, her eyes darting across the shapes of the Firekin conversing. By now some were separating to move ahead and meet with the intruders and she felt her stomach twist with fear to think of the bloodshed that might follow. "We need to get up there and see what's going on." Then she cast a look about for others of their kind. "I don't see Nawvlee or the others." Which meant it was just the two of them. She pulled herself together, physically shook herself to rid herself of fear and slipped into 'officer' mode a second later. She was needed and she was not going to break now in front of everyone.
She struck out a few steps, happening to pass close to Fionntan who was talking about checking on the other borders with Xennek and some of the others. She slowed and called out across to them. "I passed Azar'bijan not too long ago. If you hurry, you may be able to catch him and pass on the message. If he's as good as he says he is, he won't have any qualms about helping." And then more Firekin were moving ahead, through the gap in the rocks and Roho cast another look at Suditi, carefully concealing her apprehension. "I'm going to take a look at them. You can accompany me if you wish."
But what she truly meant was: 'Will you come with me?'
And without another pause, she was off, following after Veru and some of the others still lagging behind the main greeting group. The horizon opened to her and the light seemed somewhat harsher than before as she stepped in the paw-prints of those who had already gone before her. Up ahead, the group that included Ute and Kinja seemed to already be in discussion with the intruders and as Roho moved past the white lion, Veru, she felt her heart begin to pound wildly. Her legs trembled just a little as she pressed onwards, pulling on all her strength and courage to keep going.
It might not be them. It might be different lions altogether. It could be just a coincidence. Some stupid rogues that had gotten lost. Maybe it was--
--She froze.
Her pale, pale blue eyes were wide with unmasked shock. Her whole body was tense and still. Was this some trick of the desert? Some mirage her tired brain had conjured up? Or...or did she know those lions?!
"Suditi." The name was whispered as she struggled to find her breath and then she called the name again, louder. "Suditi! Do you see them, too? Do you see them?" And she gasped through her constricted throat and tore towards the group; all fear and hesitation gone. She knew those lions! They were Hongshan!
"Thank the mountains!" She gasped, lifting her voice to call out to them. "You're alive!" And then she was there, pushing past the gathered Firekin to meet with those she had thought long dead. She cared little, now, about intruding. They were Hongshan and they were here. "You're alive. You're alive. I didn't dare think it..." She trailed, blinking between them in uncharacteristic, shocked stupor. "You're alive. You escaped." Her eyes stayed on Thabiti'lengo the longest, for he had been there with her and Nawvlee. She was so sure that he had been killed. "How is this possible? How--"
And then she backtracked hastily. There had been a face that she hadn't known amongst the group. A lion she did not know as Hongshan. What was he doing with her brethren? Was he a...a...
No. No it couldn't be. It couldn't be.
Thabiti had been taken back by the Nergui. They were all with the Nergui and if this lion wasn't one of them, then...then...
"Kill him!" She raged, turning to look at the Firekin standing by. "He's not Hongshan. He's one of them! One of the Nergui!"

Ukuba already had a fairly good grasp of of the 'common' tongue before the Nergui even invaded, which is why he chose to use it at this time. Although the Firekin that had brought them here didn't seem like the paranoid type, it concerned him that he may turn on all of them if he feels that they are plotting behind his and his Pride's back, as he would be unable to understand their own language.
When a few of the Firekin started moving forward, Ukuba took a few steps himself. It was quickly stated to the approaching Firekin that the group was indeed Hongshan, and they seemed to accept that as fact rather quickly as well. How fortunate.
As Thabiti had nominated him to go forward, Ukuba decided that he didn't need Miah's permission to do so. The situation at this point seemed stable, as long as the rest of the Firekin were as amicable as the leader of the Firekin group that stood before them seemed to be.
He moved to the front of the group, his head held high, not wishing to show any weakness despite how his body ached. He shot a small smile at his brother, in an attempt to silently reassure him that everything was going to be alright, despite the fact that he himself wasn't entirely sure. The Firekin were now assured that they weren't a threat, but at times as desperate as these, a burden wouldn't exactly be welcomed either.
"That would be ideal." He said in reply to the Firekin who seemed to have taken charge of the situation. "You mentioned that there are others? We would love nothing more than to be reunited with our fellow Hongshan. If, however, you would prefer for us to remain seprated for the time being, that would be fine as well." He chose his words carefully, as his eyes never left the large group of Firekin on the horizon. He was still convinced that there was a small chance that something could go wrong, so everything they did had to be on the Firekin's terms. That, in his opinion, was the best way to prove that they weren't there to cause trouble.
Whilst he waited for the Firekin's reply, a lioness broke out from a separate approaching group. The closer she got, the more familiar she appeared. Although sadly her name was lost to him, Ukuba knew the lioness that was coming, most likely in order to identify them as well. He smiled, somewhat relieved, but still cautious. It turned out he was right to be so, as the female's face suddenly dropped and she began calling out for their dark 'savior' to be killed.
As he was already at the front of the group, Ukuba shook his head fiercly. "No! You are mistaken!" Although he was shouting, he was careful to keep his tone neutral. "This lion, Miah, helped us escape! We owe him a great deal." As the cog in his mind forever turned, he immediatly wondered if he had just made a massive error. If Miah was killed, it would certainly make this easier, as all that would be left was Hongshan. A harsh stance to take certainly, but as he had yet to discover Miah's reasons for helping them, Ukuba was still wary of him. Oh, how he hated the possibility of making mistakes.
~~~
Back with the large group of Firekin that had remained in the area where the alarm had first been raised, Teketeza snarled as word got back that it was another group of Hongshan. "More mouthes to feed?!" He snapped. "We're barely getting by as it is!" The hulking grey lion had always had a bit of a temper, and now that it had been revealed that the 'intruders' were simply more charity cases instead of an actual threat, he found it very difficult to contain his anger.
Suddenly, he let out a loud roar. "Ute! You better not be bringing them back here!" Was he speaking out of turn? Of course he was? Did he care? Of course he did. It was because he cared about his Pride that he was so wound up. His tail whipped violently from side to side as he intently watched to see what direction they went in when they started moving again.
Then, as if by magic, a second alarm. This one was a direct request, from one of the Hongshan already leeching off them no less. A wide grin touched his face. "Now we're talking." With that, Teketeza leapt down from where he was stood and went running full pelt towards the group, his orange mane bellowing like a bush fire. If there was killing to be done, he may as well be the one to do it.
Soleil's eyes lit up as her ears lifted. "Alright, now we get to FIGHT!" She turned tail, charging away from Tarsa and down toward the group of travelers. Only... When she got down to the group, she had to stop. Wait, which one was...? She turned to Roho. "Which one?! We don't know their faces like you do!" It was true, they didn't. How COULD they tell who was who? They'd come from across the Spine, and the desert, and as far as Soleil could tell, they all smelled the same - Dirty, and tired.
Keahilani followed Roho's gaze, before his eyes landed on Miah. His lips curled back as a fierce growl began to emanate from his chest and throat. "If we don't kill him, we should imprison him!" Let the others rejoin the Hongshan in the Red Quarter, but imprison this mysterious male that raised alarm. Beside him, Soleil continued to look confused.
"Roho rodae," stammered at the enthusiastic, but familiar sister among the Hongshan. It appeared that the rumors must be true if she was here, possibly the others as well. To see a familiar face outside their nomadic group was heart-warming. It was when her gaze remained on him that things began to become uncomfortable, and his focus faltered. The burning sand upon cut and worn paw pads shot electricity up his nerves causing him to flinch. "Uv...", Ow..., picking a paw to glance at it. A large gash upon the middle of his paw, surrounded by smaller cuts and knicks from rocks.
"Yai kakv'd dhavk I'k kikd ruav kavv uvk kao, kak avai?", You didn't think I'd just lay down and die, did you? Thabiti chuckled lightly. The pressing matters of the native pride and this group slowly ebbed from his mind. The Hongshan was here, they could join them and things will be safe again. His brethren will be safe here. It didn't matter that the Nergui were behind them, here, they would be safe with the native pride and the Hongshan.
Finally the steady focus he held, the concentration to arrive safely to a place where the Hongshan could rest and be protected and rebuild, was finally fading. He could finally relax. Letting out a shaking chuckle, his legs wobbled a bit before an exclamation jolted his previous fears.
Jerking to Miah, complimenting Roho's accusation, "I xrov vo tlairbr'k kuitk vai. Wlv vairb tadoaro r'xo vai do 'r klo raerb ag klato dartkout?", I knew we shouldn't trust you. Why would someone like you, a rogue, be in the land of those monsters?
To Ukuba, "We may owe him, if he is not danger to us!" The dark male growled. He was weak. He was injured. But his anger would be enough to keep him on his feet. "Why do you help us?"
Ute opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted by an outburst from behind her. She turned to look and only managed to see Roho run past and to the intruders. Ute turned and watched, as the lioness went from joy to fright. Ute's own fur stood on end at the pale eyed lionesses words. Kill him! Ute growled and spun around to those behind her; who no doubt would be excited for these words.
"Still yourselves." She hissed at those behind her seemed anxious for blood shed.
And then Teketeza howled out at her. "Then you best clear out your den site for them Teketeza... I am not leaving them here... and there will be no killing..." She turned back to face the strangers. "So he is not Hogoshan..."
She looked to Miah. She took him in for a moment before looking to those who defended him. "You are certain of him..." She stepped a bit closer as her trust for these strangers was heightening and she wanted to get a closer look at them before letting them enter. She turned and looked over her head. "And please.. only the welcome group come forward. There is no need for a stampede." She said that part with a slight snarl. "When the time comes for fighting you may void my words but there is none... so go bury your nose in the sand."
Kich had stayed silent during this time, as he had done once upon a time when his mother danced up to greet others. He...would stay suspiscious. But he hoped they were Hongshan. Those within their pride now...they would do well with more of their number. And then Roho cried out that one of them was Nergui. Nergui, those that the Hongshan had warned about. He frowned, keeping his claws sheathed for the moment, but his muscles tensed. IF such a thing was true...
"Circumstances can often lead to incorrect assumptions." He moved to stand beside his daughter. If this rogue was Nergui and not Hongshan...he would be among those to defend first. He had caution for not just the rogue now. They were Hongshan, yes...but with that also came the possibility one of them had gone 'to the other side'. It was a double-edged rock. He was happy for more of Roho's kin, but...they were to be watched as much as the non-Hongshan newcomer.
Every muscle tensed at Roho's alarm, and the hair along Nuria's spine raised into a bristling ridge as her claws extended and dug into the sand. "Is this true?" she demanded of the foreign group, giving them all a hard stare. "If one of you is not Hongshan, I'd suggest you explain now." The threat in her tone implied an added, 'before somebody gets hurt.' The situation looked as if it could quickly dissolve into bloodshed, unless someone started talking--fast.
“I agree.” Suditi replied her expression shifting at once to determination. “If they are refugees…” She trailed off and shook her head. Was it possible? Still she had to take a breath, “Then it’s just the two of us, Roho.” Without hesitation the lioness followed her friend towards the rest of the group. As Roho gave her permission to follow Suditi smiled and gently bumped her friend, “I’ll always have your back.” Her gaze shifted ahead as she raced off after Roho.
Then as they got closer Suditi’s heart did a flip. “I see them!” She called out with a bright smile blooming over her features. In her happiness the lioness forgot her bitter feelings of guilt and shame for not being at the battle that day. There were more Hongshan here! Still her excitement turned to dread as Roho’s own expression changed. What was wrong? And then Suditi noticed it as well – there was a stranger in this group. “Who are you?” She stood tall beside of her dear friend and with a low growl braced herself for a fight. If this guy was Nergui…then she would finally get a chance to taste the blood of one of those who had destroyed her precious home.
Fionntan nodded at Roho’s advice before leaving the main group. He would go find Azar'bijan and ask for his help.
“Stop it!” Xennek immediately rushed in front of Suditi and Roho both. Placing himself in between the groups Xennek looked at those who called for the blood of the lion who was supposedly not Hongshan. “I may not be Hongshan and I may not know who is who over here, but remember one thing. When the first group of Hongshan came here they brought with them others as well. Roho, even I traveled with you and entered this land with your group. I was not Hongshan.” He looked back over at the strangers, “For all we know he could be a rogue who joined up with them. And that does not make this lion an enemy for certain then. So stop before you allow your excitement for fighting get the best of you.” He looked over at Ute with a slight nod before it faded into a small frown. Even he was one who would sometimes rather just shove another to the side through his strength alone, but surely reason would get through. The last thing they needed was senseless bloodshed especially if the Nergui was still around.
He looked over at Suditi, “And aren’t your people strong? I think if it’s them verses just one of the enemy then he would have not traveled far at all with them.” And if it was a trap then he just hoped that Fionntan made it to the others and the borders were checked in time. His gaze flashed with worry before a gleam of fire showed. They were Firekin and even the dirtiest of tricks wouldn’t take down this pride easily.
Silently Suditi settled down behind him before pressing comfortingly against Roho. "We'll find out about this stranger." She promised.
For a few moments, Tswana was very happy. It didn't take a genius to figure out exactly why, as a familiar face stepped out from between the firekin. The lioness cracked a smile, and her ears perked up. Just like that, it seemed she had gained back a tiny bit of her old self, and she stood taller.
This moment was quickly ruined as Roho's expression changed from a joyous one and soured. Then... fear? Tswana almost jumped away at the sudden accusation, only didn't because she still stood next to Zheva. Her demeanor changed quickly, since Roho appeared. It had gone from miserable, frail, and fearful, to happy, excited, and then... Angry.
Tswana wouldn't have believed she had the energy for truly being furious, but apparently she did. The lioness lowered her head and snarled, moving forwards to join Thabiti and his brother. If Miah really was Nergui, she was ready to kill him, as Roho said. Had this happened a few days ago, the lioness might have just cowered. But now she had seen a sister, and she knew there was hope and she was damned if she would let this lion ruin it. She didn't even remember the firekin were around now, because the entire world comprised of their little group. Them, the Hongshan, and, it seemed, the Nergui.
--
Kalama was pleasantly surprised at the approval her idea had gained, because it had honestly been just a musing. She quite liked it when people agreed with her, but somehow managed not to smirk at her own 'accomplishment'. That wouldn't really look very cool. She could just feel good on the inside.
And then Roho managed to push through the crowd, which irritated Kalama. Everyone was getting closer and closer, and she felt a little left behind. So she squeezed through where Roho had passed. And when the Hongshan screamed... Kalama didn't need to be told twice.
She almost immediately hurried forward, ready to attack Miah, but fortunately for him, Ute and some others were still between them, and they turned to the firekin group just in time to make Kalama stop in her tracks. Irritated, she snarled at the white female, but didn't instigate a fight, and bobbed her head to indicate some sort of compliance, and perhaps something akin to an apology for the snarl, more a formal gesture than a sincere one. She bounced the side and walked that way, her entire posture indicating irritation and restlessness, from the lashing of her tail to her low ears. Yes, she was definitely ready for a fight, and everyone would know that now. But the red lioness also had good enough sense to stay her claws. For now, anyway.
She sulked away, back towards the end of the group once more. Kalama reacted quickly, she always had, and even she knew it might be best to hang out in the back for now, and keep lions between her and the outsiders. One more little outburst like that and she might not have been stopped.
Further back, with the firekin who had stayed behind, Spaki's ears perked at the sound of commotion. Kill him! he managed to make out, and there seemed to be some movement in the firekin group, but it stopped quickly. He saw Kalama's bright red pelt circle back and settle at the back of the group. So at least he knew there wasn't a fight.
Still, now even Moto'Spaki couldn't be kept back, though he was usually a calmer lion. He began to move closer to the group up ahead, to get a better look at what was going on.
Kinja remained calm and listened to the conversations taking place. Accusations, cries for blood, amiable words, and none of it was helping to move this process along. Many ideas had been thrown out on how to deal with the situation but nothing was being done about it. As much as Kinja respected the others of her pride, she knew this situation wasn't going to be taken care of if things proceeded as they have been going. Bellowing back and forth between groups just wasn't going to cut it.
"Enough!" She crowed to her Firekin group, giving them all a steady look. "Things aren't going to be handled well if we all do not settle down."
Holding herself proudly, the old lioness looked to Xennek. "We're going to have them come into the main pride area. Hollering to each other isn't going to solve this. If you could get the guards and some soldiers to protect our new arrivals, that would be ideal."
She turned her attention to Roho. "I need you to remain calm and go and gather others from your pride so we can get some things cleared up."
She then turned to Ute. "I'd like you and a few others to help accompany them into the prides lands. This way everyone can feel safe and in control. The Hongshan seem amiable enough and willing to work with us."
She looked back at the Hongshan, and taking the chance, trotted up to the group. "I hope you don't mind being under guard until everything can be taken care of. This is to protect us and yourselves."
