Don wasn't quite sure how to attract monsters of the sea, and wasn't keen on getting too close to the waves. The large golden lion was mostly oblivious to the going-ons around him, particularly because he was attempting to spot said sea monster from the shore. Some sort of clue as to where it might potentially appear would be helpful. He watched for shadows, ripples, splashes, anything that could possibly be a sea monster. Eventually he had the idea to claw at the water as it came onto shore, but it was easily discarded as ridiculous. He shrugged his broad shoulders as Ru called them to gather, abandoning his spot by the waves to see what the captain had in mind.

"Kree help, good gull. Fly over and keep a watch for big, sharp teeth fish. Monster. Whatever it is."

The gull shifted his wings in what seemed like a slight shrug. He quite literally had nothing better to do, other than hunt for something to eat. This would be both entertaining and, so long as the lioness kept up her end of the bargain, belly filling. What more could a gull ask for? He preened another few feathers as he watched her walk away, then gave the surrounding lions another look over. He felt comfortable, if only because he had an agreement with Aluka, that the others would probably not attack him. Besides, if they went after anything other than their "monster," it'd be that damned squirrel that was chunking things at them. He laughed to himself before kicking off of the sand with his webbed feet and taking off into the air. He wheeled around the group once, twice, before evening out and drifting over the shore's shallow water.

Aluka was biting herself. She was talking to another lion. Someone threw fish scales into the water. His beady eyes followed all of the movement below with keen interest. He could easily see the shadows of fish, some alone and others schooling, darting about in the water. Many were congregating around the fish scales that had been tossed in and around Aluka's bitten leg, but all of this was normal fish behavior. He didn't see any monsters, yet.

Blood sacrifice... Sounded like they took him seriously! A little bubble of pride welled up in his chest. Even if it didn't work, he didn't expect lions to take a gull seriously.

"Good idea." She grinned, amused. She would approve of annoying lions being made a sacrifice, but of course didn't think anything of that sort would actually happen.

Since Aluka was already right next to Ru, she didn't really have to dislocate when he called everyone over. Instead she spent that time shifting her paws while tiny fish tried to get at the little cut she'd made. How annoying. She did her best to ignore it, and after a while was successful. Now for Ru to start talking about his idea.

Galning turned around with a great deal of effort and began to paddle back to shore. He was relieved, but at the same time he was miserable. Returning to shore meant that he couldn't watch the waves, and that made him nervous. His nerves meant that he wasn't completely surprised when a wave caught him, knocked him over, and dumped him onto the beach before attempting to drag him back out. It was only through determination and a great deal of swearing that he escaped the undertow.

"Gack!" he exclaimed as he stumbled out of the surf and over to Ru and Aluka wearing a deep frown. He had no idea that him being a sacrifice had come up even as a joking topic of discussion. He was just frustrated at having been sent to risk his life and then recalled seemingly for no reason.

"What's the plan, Captain?"

A wandering crab had been observing the lions shouting and trying to gain the attention of something in the sea. But what? It skittered across the beach and eyed all the lions one by one. As he spotted a gull and heard it mention sea monsters, it's eyes swiveled back to the sea. Sea monster? How preposterous. The only monsters the crab saw where these lions. How odd of them to think there were creatures like them in the sea.

The throwing of fish scales caught his attention as some smaller looking lion stared intently into the sea. He skittered to the gull and clacked his claws curiously, "What on earth are you all doing?" He asked the gull, not quite comfortable in talking to an actual lion just yet. They were such big monsters with sharp teeth and long claws. He was easily intimidating for his thick shell was no match for those teeth.

Ru looked around him at his band. If today's efforts were any indication of the success they would meet with in the tasks to come, it was difficult to be hopeful for the future. On the other hand, they had only been at it for a relatively short time. He did not let his disappointment show on his face. These were not supposed to be easy tasks, anyway.

"Aluka brought to my attention the possibility that perhaps something along the lines of a blood sacrifice would be more effective at luring a sea monster to shore, and I happen to agree with her."

He looked around, mentally breaking this task into its component parts and assigning the smaller separate tasks to different members of the band. At least that part wasn't too difficult.

"Don, Inyoni, and Zairre, I want you to hunt down something of a size to make a suitable sacrifice. A land animal, preferably, or a few of them if you can't find one large beast. I assume sea monsters get more than their fill of sea creatures, so let's see if we can tempt it with land animals."

"Asper and Galning, I want you to find or make something that can contain choice bits from the kill. I'm thinking something out of hide, but if you can come up with something else, I'm open to suggestions."

"Halvdan, and Aluka, I'd like you to try to explain to the gulls what we're trying to accomplish and see if you can persuade them to carry our blood sacrifice a little way out to sea. Which means that whatever you and Asper make, Galning, will have to be portable for gulls."

He didn't mention what he would be doing, but he did summon Munyu to his side, saying, "You're working with me. I would like to pick your brain a bit."

The squirrel was not pleased to be ignored again. The big hunters scattered about, doing very random things. Hmm, time to cause a little more chaos! She rubbed her paws together and thought intently. Ah! She disappeared from sight for a while, but eventually returned with a length of sturdy seaweed. Not just that, but a nice big pile of large pebbles. Ah yes, this should get their attention!

She sat at the edge of the cliff, at the very top. They didn't look so big and bad from up here! With a sing-song taunt, she whirled the seaweed and flung one of the heavy pebbles at one of the lions. "Haha, stupid cats! Let's give the bitey fish a little more to smell from afar, eh?" This time her pebbles were not the smooth ones, but the sharp edged kind. Oh, it wouldn't do any real harm, unless she managed a direct hit to an eye. But the jagged pieces of rock would certainly sting quite a bit!

She listened along, nodding at whatever moment felt appropriate. Ru seemed to have a good idea, and Aluka was happy to follow his lead. And she felt a little proud, having sort of helped him devise it and all. Or at least inspire it.

She idly wondered where they would find some decent land prey at this time and place, but was happy to find this wouldn't be her problem. Her job would be to talk to the gulls, which Aluka didn't mind in the least. She just hoped Kree remained willing to help out, and maybe persuade a few friends to do the same. With a nod, she glanced at Halvdan, and moved away from the main group to find the gull.

She found Kree wasn't where he had been (she had sked him to keep an eye out), and he wasn't the only seagull around. It might be hard to find him just on sight. She wasn't accustomed well enough to gulls to differentiate one easily from the other. "Kree?" She called out, hopefully loudly enough, and tried to catch sight of him.

(ugh forgot to roll again. sorry guys!)

Having not seen anything out of the ordinary yet and being far too curious about what the lions were discussing, Kree drifted over the sands, abandoning his lookout post for a moment to eavesdrop. He landed in the sand, webbed feet kicking up the white, almost powdery substance as he listened in to the instructions the lead lion was giving to the others. Hunt for meat, sounded good. His attention was drawn to the crab that skittered near him. Thick shell or no, the resourceful bird might have considered the crab a tasty morsel if he hadn't been so distracted by recent ongoings. The eagerness of the lions' wishes to find and hunt a sea monster was infectious, even if he really didn't understand why they would want to do such a thing completely.

"They hunting sea monster, big fish, sharp teeth." He cocked his head slightly to the side and regarded the creature with mild interest. "You help? I'm lookout, Kree is good look out."

And he did just that, looking out. He did not like being on the ground for too long, but what bird truly did? Bar the ones who made their livings amongst the underbrush, anyway. He quite liked being up high and relatively safe, unless larger flighted predators were patrolling the skies. He took back off and continued to circle until catching sight of the lion with which he had been conversing earlier. Wheeling downward, he landed nearer to her. He was confident, as was generally part of a gull's nature, especially now that he was certain she would not try and make quick work of him.

"You called?"

Galning's ears flattened when he heard that now there was going to be a blood sacrifice, but he still did not protest. He just wanted to know what Ru could possibly know about sacrifices that would make him qualified to make up a ritual on the spot. The fact that the lioness he'd knocked up was daughter to the high priestess and sister to another priestess didn't impress Galning. Galning had lots of family and knew full well that knowledge didn't transmit through blood, or else his cousins would be a lot smarter and Yolla would be more of a fighter.

"So...a satchel that will split?" he mumbled, not really expecting Ru to respond. It was more to himself and Asper that he spoke.

As he turned away he deliberately bumped Asper with one shoulder and said in an undertone, "So, this is what glory looks like, huh? Crafting on a beach. Who would have thought?"

Another, larger squirrel appeared at the top of the cliff. It was clearly a male, and apparently did not approve of the female's antics. He snatched the seaweed sling as she began whirling it to fling another stone, jerking it out of her paws. "What's wrong with you?" he chittered furiously. "Are you mad? Picking a fight with something that's big enough to have you stuck between its teeth and not even notice?" He swung the sling and bopped the she-squirrel over the head with it, eliciting a yip from the smaller creature.

The female glared up at the big male. "Nothing wrong with me, I just don't like them horrid big cats. They are disturbing the beach and trying to stir up the bitey fish!" She rubbed her head with one paw resentfully. "That's just trouble, and I wanted them to stop!"

The male squirrel peered over the edge at the gathering of lions, his bright eyes narrowed with suspicion. If this was true, it was indeed a problem. He mulled what to do, agile paws fiddling absently with the seaweed sling.

"Munyu," he called to the white lion who he felt could use a guiding hand. "Kill the tree rat. We can offer it as a sacrifice."

Munyu had become enraptured in what he was doing, throwing rocks and yelling at the water. It suddenly occurred to the white lion that someone had addressed him to take care of some tree rat. He looked around, before spotting the squirrel. After a few minutes, he went over to the cliff, staring up at it. The white lion scowled. "You! Get down here!" He started climbing the cliff, though this was hard to do - Such a bulky lion, even at his young age, wasn't really meant to climb. And Munyu was going after a squirrel... He'd seen a couple of them back home, and none were easy to catch. This was going to be either a very spectacular victory, or a very spectacular failure.

It was coincidental that the male squirrel happened to look downward just as one of the big scruffy predators began trying to climb the cliff. "Chak!" he barked in both alarm and scorn. Such a stupid group of predators! Trying to entice the bitey fish into shore, and trying to climb their cliff? Pah! Discarding the seaweed sling, which the female immediately snatched up again, the male scampered out of sight for a moment. When he returned, he was hefting a rock twice the size of his own head. With a grunting chortle, he hurled it over the edge and directly at the lion trying to climb below.

The female, meanwhile, resumed chucking pebbles and bits of jagged rock at the rest of the lions, using her clever sling. "Go back to grassy hooflands, shag-heads!" she squeaked furiously. Either that, or she'd like those bitey fish to actually come. THEN they'd have a show! She paused in her rock-hurling to consider this. Wordlessly she chittered at the male, gesturing to the sea and tipping her head inquiringly. "Get rid of thems good, yes?"

"Munyu, leave them," Ru said, countermanding whatever order Munyu thought he was acting on. He had not heard Galning telling the purple-eyed lion to kill the squirrels, and so he was mostly irritated that he had no sooner told Munyu that he wanted to talk to him then the younger lion went off to chase rodents.

"Unless, of course, you think they can contribute anything useful to our efforts." Ru doubted that, and he didn't want to get any closer than he already was. Any closer and he would be within range of the the light hail of debris one of the creatures was sending down to annoy him and his band.

"I want to know how much you know about Susu's work."
