Entry: The Girl
Name: Faizah (“Victorious”, Swahili)
Personality: Absolutely nothing can keep Faizah down, she’s optimistic to the very end, even when others could find no hope left to grasp. She loves to offer words of condolence and is a proud, effortless speaker – ready to uplift spirits wherever she goes. Faizah is a pushy, pragmatic girl who wants to get the absolute most out of life. She lives every moment to its fullest, refusing to waste even a precious second doing something useless. Her time is precious to her, and she gives it sparingly.

Like many hyenas, she considers males beneath her, regarding them as some lesser life form useful for breeding new females into the pack, but not much else. She will only ever treat the highest ranking males with respect. And the others? Dirt beneath her toes.

Entry: The Dude
Name: Ekundayo
Meaning: Sorrow becomes happiness, Yoruba/Nigeria

Girl's Name: Hortlak (Turkish, spook)
Girl's Owner: Andranis
Boy's Name: Aneetz (Hebrew, wisp)
Boy's Owner: mouselet

Entry: (try to limit it to less than 1000 words, writers!)

Aha! There was a lovely vertebrae just lying on the ground, bleached and lonely. Aneetz bent to lick it gently clean, revealing its smooth, rounded center and the spikes which characterized this type of bone jutting outwards. A near perfect specimen! The grey hyena tucked the find into the lion skull he dragged everywhere for just that purpose. He knew his sister was up ahead and getting further away, but he simply couldn't bring himself to care nearly as much about whatever her mission was as the bones that almost littered the ground around them.

After all, how often did one find such a beautiful bone? He simply couldn't pass it up!

As she moved, Hortlak reflected on the past... Only to be brought back to the present. She looked around, finding her brother nowhere to be seen. When she turned around, the pale gray female's ears folded back as she scowled. He was doing it again... She walked back, losing precious ground in the process.

A paw shot out, swatting at the male. "ANEETZ! You're doing it AGAIN! How many times have I told you NOT to do that?! Not out HERE!" It seemed like everything he did was getting on her nerves.

The male in question winced back from the swat. As such things went, it hadn't been the worst attack Hortlak had ever used on him. But it still stung and brought his attention to her, as it was meant to do. He forced back the tears of pain and fought to keep his voice level and calm as he replied.

"And how many times have I told you that this area is a bone collector's treasure trove? I would let down my profession and countless other pack members by ignoring what lies at my feet!" Not that he expected his plea to make any difference to his bossy older sister. But he still had to make it, for form's sake.

She scowled at him, fur raising on her shoulders. "This is exactly why we got left behind when the pack went to war! You stopped to look at some bones, and got stuck in a skull! By the time I got you out of it, the fighting was over!" She paced, tail lashing back and forth. "Why can't you do this on days when we're NOT going on a mission of some kind?"

"Because we're always on a mission of some kind when we're out here," Aneetz answered mildly. Clearly, that was the only time he was ever out this way. Not that he hadn't appreciated Hortlak's help in getting out of the skull at the time, but she had to admit it had been a beautiful skull. He'd gotten quite a bit of praise from the older bone collectors upon returning with that prize.

Not to mention, he didn't understand his sister's obsession with war. With war, people got hurt, sometimes people you knew and loved. Wasn't that what had happened to their own parents? Killed in that big war with the lions? Why would Hortlak seek out such violence after that tragedy?

She rolled her eyes, scowl still on her face. "Did you ever think to come out here when we're NOT on a mission? It can't be THAT hard to do..." She gave him a shove, trying to get him moving again. "Now come on! We need to go scout that watering hole, make sure it's not been overtaken!" She gave a scoff. "Dirty stinking lions... They act like they OWN the place..."

"It isn't considered safe to come out here most of the time," the male pointed out. He knew she didn't really want to hear the logic, that she was much more interested in ranting about his activities. It was the way she'd always been.

He didn't ask any of the many questions he could have about this entire mission. Such as, what would they do if there WERE lions at the water hole? They were only two hyenas after all, and individually a lion did outmass any hyena. One lion they might be able to deal with, but a whole pride? That was something far more extreme.

The female only scoffed, before starting to walk. "Then find someone to come out here WITH you." She couldn't always pupsit him, could she? She didn't certainly WANT to.

As they neared the watering hole, she counted every lion she saw. Finally, face hardened, she turned back for the pack's lands. "Come on. We need to tell Masuko." And right there was the point of the mission - See if lions were there, and report back to the alpha. It was a fairly simple mission, one that she'd wanted to just get done and get back home for.

Aneetz stifled his response that Hortlak was already out here, with him, as they came up on the ater hole. And yes, there were lions. Everywhere. The male stayed quiet as his sister did the work they'd come here for and they were finally able to turn around and head back to the graveyard.

As they trekked, his paws and occasionally his jaws snuck out to retrieve likely bones. This meant that he was starting to lag behind again, but he couldn't let his overly focused sister divert him from HIS mission! He just...didn't have to alert her to what he was doing.

She started to turn to reprimand her brother for collecting bones again, when the female stopped. The way he was sneaking... It was almost comical. She let out a heavy sigh, then bent down, picking up a bone. If she couldn't beat him... She may as well join him.

He caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye of Hortlak actually bending down to grab a bone or two. It was hard, to keep his mouth shut, but he managed it. Moments like this made him glad to have her for a sister in the end.

Girl's Name: Suma / Ask
Girl's Owner: Saint Sergio
Boy's Name: Abiodun / Born during a war
Boy's Owner: Thalion

Entry: (try to limit it to less than 1000 words, writers!)

The stories had faded from the interest of the small family unit. A mother, her favorite mate, and her secondary mate. Soon came pups- himself, his sister, and their half-siblings. It wasn't much of a pack but it had brought down enough to keep them fed as they grew. It was enough to keep them safe from wandering rogues and to keep an extra set of eyes and ears on the grasslands.

But as they grew older, their parents grew frail and on one raining-season night, their mother had passed away. Their sire, closely bonded to his mate, soon stopped eating and joined his beloved. It was the end of their harsh but familiar way of life. The stories, ironically, long forgotten in the chaos that was adulthood, surfaced to the forefront of the minds of himself and his twin sister. Their half-siblings, along with their sire, departed to find their own way. Abiodun and his sister were left to find theirs.

The only way they had to go was back.

Following with his ears raised and his paws silent, Abio quietly digested the details of their puphood stories. A place where elephants go to die...what sort of dogs would live there? And more importantly- was the durranged pride of lions who had originally intimidated their parents from the lands linger?

Hesitant paws followed her brother closely. The stories went through Suma's head as they walked. The quiet was her friend right now, as she knew it would be with the brother she followed. Her heart was heavy as she replayed their mother and father passing in her head. She had taken it so hard, because that was the beginning of the family leaving to find their own stories, their own lives. She hadn't been ready for that yet. She still wanted to be a pup that played with her parents. . She was close to the older female. The day their mother died, was the day her heart shattered. Then the death of their father was like someone stomping on those pieces.

She had tried to get their father to eat, tried to get him to live, for the families sake. He'd just said they were old enough to be on their own. That he wasn't needed anymore. It was his way of saying goodbye. It hurt so deeply.

If her brother had left, Suma wouldn't have been alive today. Her brother was the last one that stayed with her out of her siblings, half and whole. Letting her eyes lift to her brother's back, she spoke. "....Do you think it will be like the old pack?" She asked, meaning the ones from the stories. Her voice was tight, trying to sound not shaky about it.

His ears rolled back and his expression remained unreadable. He'd not openly mourned for the passing of his parents but there had been grief in his silence. He had been close, but it was his role to keep his head up and press on. Death, his sire had often said, was just another part of life. His words rang true and bit bitterly at the pit of his son's gut.

"I don't know what we'll find there." He admitted. "I just hope the lions that infested the bonelands have moved on or died off... we may very well be walking into a graveyard of a different sort."

A graveyard of a different kind, hm? It could be interesting. If there were lion bones there, they could learn more about them. Which bones were the weakest to attack and what not. Her thirst to learn was a huge part of her. She had plagued her family with question after question. She'd taken to jotting down notes in her own way to look back on. Her tail flicked as she sighed and walked beside him.

"I hope their dead rather than just moved off. That way no one has to worry about an attack on the pack," she said rather bluntly. She was still nervous, that much was true, but she hated lions. She hated them with every fiber in her being. Some days she just wanted to get her teeth around the neck of a male lion cub just to prove a point that hyenas weren't push overs like some prides believed they were. Stinking lions.

"What are you thinking, Abiodun? What are you thinking now?"

"Sometimes a dead lion brings around a lot of living ones." He reminded her. "We don't want to get ourselves in bad with this pack... if they're still around." He looked to her seriously. "We might be returning to a graveyard of our kin. Not lion-kin and not exclusively elephant-kin. We have to be ready for whatever we find there."

He looked ahead once more and continued on, his paws quick under him and his eyes leery. "And remember... most hyenas put females in charge. If we're going to fit in, you're going to have to lead me in."

Sighing, the female nodded. She knew all of this. She remembered the stories very clearly. He expression went serious as his did and as she thought. Suma was going to have to take the lead on this one. She didn't want too, but she had to if they were to stay together.

"I know, I'll take charge. I'll do what I have to." Nerves were pushed aside. She had time to be nervous later. Right now, she had to focus on getting into the pack and making sure her brother got in good and stayed close. With that, she took the lead as the pack's borders came into view. She knew it was the pack, because of the smells, and because of the giant elephant bones that were starting to appear. The lands were getting darker and more depressing looking, but it suited them. Her head held high and her paw-steps were getting firmer.

Here goes nothing.
