Lauren suddenly heard a bout of commotion from not far away. She just waved off the scarred man, "Ah, never mind that for now." She reached for her gun and looked back at Rebecca, "Look him over, make sure he's healthy and whatnot please," She then turned to find out what all the noise was about. She heard shouting, plenty of shouting, and not the good, fun kind. Bad shouting.

She came across a group as she walked towards the noise. About five of them, all young men, obnoxious young men. She'd never been fond of those guys. They were the type who'd start fights and drink and make crude comments before the world ended, and they still did now. But they'd never caused any real harm here, that she knew of. She saw them shouting at someone walking away...she recognized that cloak. Andrew? That was his name, yeah?

She felt a bubble of anger rise as they shouted at the poor kid, and she wished partly that these people hadn't been some of the lucky few who'd survived the flesh eating hordes of the world. She pulled her weapon, but did not aim. "Oi!" She shouted over their commotion. "Leave the boy alone, he's done nothing to you. Remember the rules. You cause trouble and you're out!"

They gawked at her and a couple scoffed and muttered something she couldn't quite hear. "You cause any more trouble and i'll seriously consider throwin' you out. " She threatened before speeding up to catch up with Andrew. She leaned down and spoke to him, "You alright? Don't let those bozos get to you. " She told him, ignoring some rather rude comments coming from the group behind her.

Andrew kept his gaze forward until the woman from before caught up to him. He looked up at her and gave her a slight smile to reassure her that he was fine. He was just glad he hadn't gotten into a fight. He knew he wouldn't have survived a fight with those men. He'd take some angry, yelling men over the zombies that lurked outside.

He lifted his hand to rub the back of his head where he'd been hit. Luckily, the debris didn't cut his head, but the spot still stung. He looked around, wondering where she'd come from. He thought there was no one around out this way. He figured then that he shouldn't assume that he knew anything about this place yet.

Lauren felt a little twang of triumph and satisfaction when Andrew smiled. Good, so the kid didn't hate her and wasn't planning on stabbing her in her sleep. She watched him look around, understanding his confusion. "I was patrolling the fences. There are a number of smaller entrances and exits around the city. Usually only for emergencies or in case someone needs help...Then i heard all that yelling." She explained to him.

Sometimes a weapons shipment from the scavengers would come in through one of the back entrances--as to keep a low profile. But those gates were kept monitored for any sort of threat usually, and were usually just thought of as emergency exits.She looked down at the kid, "Let's go back to the main road...you hungry? And what about that guy...Kaiden?" She managed to remember that handsome man;s name.

He listened to her carefully. He would have to walk along the fence to find these other entrances. If needs be, he could guide Kaidan to one of them and they could escape. When she mentioned that she heard the yelling, he was glad that she had gone to investigate. They could have gotten violent and if she hadn't shown up..well it wouldn't be pretty.

He didn't say anything, even though he was hungry. He had practically become mute in the years since he lost his father. Kaidan was the only one he spoke to because Kaidan was the only one he was sure he could trust. But even though he didn't say anything, his stomach did, growling when she asked if he was hungry. Thinking of food reminded him he hadn't eaten since the day before.

Lauren wasn't expecting much from the boy. But was a simple yes or no too much to ask for? Or a nod of the head. She continued walking and glanced down at him when she heard his stomach speak for him. "We've got food, and it's nearly dinner time now," She said, looking up at the sky as it began to change colors. Throughout the day it was mostly blue, but when the evening hit the sky always began to fade into the most magnificent shades of orange and pink. The sun was setting, which meant dinner time for the people here.

"So if you go grab Kaiden now you'll have dinner before the sun is gone." The rationing system kept things orderly, and serving people went by fast. Each person would get a meal and some water. Food usually didn't change very much, unless scavengers brought in some goodies, or they had managed to successfully grow vegetables or some fruits.

They were coming up to the main road now, where the main housing buildings were, including their's. Down the street a ways was a flat bed truck with some crates and boxes and bottles of water and things. A small group of people had started to crowd around the truck where they would begin handing out the meals. On the other side of the town, towards the farther back housing buildings, there was a similar thing happening.

❛Andrew walked with her until they passed the house that he and Kaidan were staying at. He ducked into the door and ran for the room Kaidan was currently sleeping in. He stopped by the bed and climbed up, putting his hands on Kaidan's arm and shaking him. "Kaid, wake up. They're serving dinner," he said. Kaidan woke up almost immediately, reaching for his bow reflexively. Andrew stopped him and explained that Lauren said they were serving dinner. It took Kaidan a second to remember who Lauren was. "Alright, let's go get some dinner," he said. He reached for his bow and quiver anyway and slung them over his shoulder as he led the way out of the room, back outside to where Lauren was standing. "I hear it's dinner time?" he asked, yawning and running his fingers through his hair.❜

Lauren looked over at Kaiden and Andrew. She nodded, smiling a little, pointing over to the truck. "They hand out meals over there," She said, starting to walk that way. Kaiden had just woken up, she could tell, his voice was a bit gruff and he was yawning and he did look a lot...better. Well rested, mostly. Naps are wonderful things if you get the chance to have one. But it wasn't as if that man could look bad at all. He'd shown up dirty and grungy and he still looked amazing compared to the rest of the folks around here.

They made it to the truck and waited in the line for food. She let the two go in front of her, as they were guests and it was only polite. Today they were handing out some of the non perishables they'd rounded up on their last supply run. They were lucky this time, they'd hit a jackpot of supply crates in a locked back room of an old grocery store. They'd stocked up on soups and rice and things like that. They were each handed their dinners, soup in a can, a plastic spoon, and a bottle of water.

A few small fires were being set up along the main street for those who would prefer to eat their dinners warm. She spotted an open camp fire with only a person or two sitting by it. She motioned over to it. "Come on, it's always more filling when it's cooked." This food wasn't much, but this was more than most people could get on their own these days. They were lucky.

❛Andrew followed them to the line, hoping his stomach didn't growl again. When he was handed his can and water, he balanced the items in one hand, then touched his fingers to his chin and moved them away, using sign language to say 'thank you' to the one who gave him his food. He waited for Kaidan and Lauren to have their food, then, looked to the fire Lauren pointed out. Hungry, he decided not to wait for the adults, and instead ran ahead of them to the fire, and was sat cross legged in front of it.

Kaidan walked with Lauren, matching her pace. "Thank you again for letting us in here. It's a lot easier when we have a greater chance at having a meal," he said, watching Andrew open his can without bothering to heat it up. "I can go a day or two without eating if it means he can have something." He didn't like letting Andrew go without food. He was too young to go hungry. "We didn't find anything since yesterday, so I'm glad he gets to eat today." He'd sacrifice his can of soup for Andrew if he was still hungry after his own can.❜

Rebecca nodded to Lauren who walked off and then she turned her attention to the scarred man. She grabbed her flashlight to look in his eyes. She found one that had a vein that popped from damage to the eye. " You should be more careful or else you will go blind." She had him follow her finger as she can see that he could see perfectly fine. Rebecca noticed the sun was setting a dinner was being served. She ways make sure that the people ate and she eat whatever is left over. "Dinner is ready. When your done let me or Laurn know so we can give you a room."

Rebecca then turned away until the group of kids that she was watching playing grab her arms and one manage to climb on her back pulling her to the truck. "Come one Becca dinner time." She smiled gently as she took them to the truck where she passed a fire where Lauren was sitting. "Hey L, the guy is fine but I would keep an eye on him." She said as the children quickly ran off to get their dinner and join their families to eat.

Rebecca walked over and helped with distributing the food. "Alright gentlemen and ladies thanks for the help. You can go on and join your families and eat." They thanked her then took their food and walked off. Rebecca grabbed whatever was left but she saw from the corner of her eye that someone was trying to steal a can of food. Rebecca grabbed her blade and threw it in their direction as it pinned the person against the wood side of the truck. She approached and found one of the guys that hanged out by the fence with the others who always stirred up trouble. "That's not nice. You know the rules. You already bad your fill and I know for sure you and your boys are not going to eat it all." The young guy sneered. "b***h!" He tried getting lose but failed. "So you keep telling me." Rebecca pulled her blade out and pushed him away. "Two strikes one more and I'll personally make sure you and your boys leave this place." He spat on the flooty near her feet and left.

Rebecca shook her head as she placed the food back away and grabbed her dinner. She walked over to the fire where L was out and sat across from her as she was talking to a man with a young boy. Rebecca blue eyes that wasn't a normal blue stung for a few moments as she closed her eyes then opened it again. She then opened her soup with her blade that had S.T.A.R.S written on it then started eating as she left it resting on her lap.

Lauren nodded, smiling a little. "Don't worry, i understand. " She said and followed Andrew to the little fire, sitting down across from him. She looked up at Rebecca and nodded again. "Alright, i'll make sure he won't cause any trouble."

Lauren opened her can and held it above the fire for a moment before pulling away. The metal can heating up, but she was careful to keep it cool enough as to not burn her. She began to eat slowly, the food was good. Better here than anything she'd found scavenging throughout the years after the outbreak, and she was thankful for that.

"We manage well here, so you should have at least one meal a day. Enough to get by." She told them, smiling a little. "During the spring we can even manage some produce. Those are good days. It's not every day you can get something fresh." There were some trees around here that, if they were lucky, would sprout some fruits. And if they got rain during the spring or late fall, they could manage some vegetables too. That was hard work but it was definitely worth it. Unfortunately though, Lauren did not realize this would be the last real meal she'd have.

❛Kaidan offered a smile to the woman who sat across from them, setting his can down in front of him. Next to him, Andrew was already halfway through his can. "I can go out on scavenging hunts if you need the help," he offered. If it meant finding more food, he'd gladly help. "And if you guys need help with the gardening I can help with that too." He didn't know a lot about gardening, but he'd help out however he could. He grabbed his can and opened it, eating a bit of the soup.❜

"We could always use an extra helping hand." She told him, "A lot of the people here use this place as their chance to relax, which is great and all, but some like to stick to playing helpless refugees."She admitted. "We need all the help we can get. I heard some of the guys are going out on a supply run in a day or so, to make repairs to the fences, if you'd like to go with." She offered. The fences always needed repairs, or needed additions,

The sky was darkening now, and the fire was lighting up their little circle. The wind blew, a few small gusts, the air getting chilly, but it wasn't too drastic. They were in the beginnings of a heat wave, so the nights would only get so cold.

❛Kaidan nodded. He'd figure out which guys were going on the trip and volunteer to go with them. He'd make sure Andrew stayed behind. The kid would be safer in the fence than out there with him. "Will you be going on this trip as well?" he asked. Would be good to know somebody on the trip, not that he'd care either way. "Or do you just do the patrolling?" It seemed just as likely. With a place this size, people needed to play their part and help out. Except for those 'helpless refugees' Lauren had mentioned. They were lucky to have been accepted into the city and put no effort out to help those sheltering them. They were selfish and Kaidan wouldn't have let them stay if he were in charge.❜

Lauren swallowed her food and thought about it. "I usually only do patrol, and the occasional bit of scavenging, but i help out with things like that if they need me to." She told him. "I might. If we're good around here when the time comes,"

She opened her water and took a drink. " Have to make sure the coast is clear before sending people out. Especially if that's less people guarding the fence that needs fixing." She looked over at Andrew as he scarfed down his meal. She smiled. "Make sure to breathe between bites," She teased.

❛If she remained behind, maybe she would agree to keep an eye on Andrew while he was gone. He had a habit of wandering off when left alone. He'd talk to her when he was sure whether she'd be staying or not. "How big are the groups that usually go out?" he asked.

Andrew paused when she spoke and glanced over at her. He gave her an annoyed glare and went back to eating, finishing off the last of his can. He set it aside and grabbed the water, twisting it open. "Do you want some more Andrew?" Kaidan asked, offering his own can to him. Andrew stared at the can for a few seconds before shaking his head and taking a drink of water. Kaidan pulled the can back and took another spoonful.❜
