While he was contemplating the pros and cons of going slow and steady vs going wild and reckless, he realized another lioness was pulling ahead of him!
It was just like he'd imagined, wasn't it? They still had a lot of mountain left to go though, he could do it! He swallowed hard, tail giving a little flick. His paws were still unsure about going any faster than they already were though... he just did not want to fall!

There weren't many lions ahead of her now, that was definitely a good sign! She mentally laughed at her success, who would have thought she'd make it this far?! She surely hadn't, yet here she was, almost leading the pack! She only needed a few more good sprints to really put her nose above the rest of the pack.
"Just a few more .." Kaimana mumbled to herself, in her usual cheery tone, trying to hold her concentration, but also keep herself motivated. 3+2+4+4=13

Ah-ha! She had finally managed to secure herself a decent spot in the group, all while not breaking anything to do it, but also not pulling herself to the front. Kipenzi flipped her head to the side, soft eyes noticing one of the lionesses having a hard time. Well, until she put on a burst of speed that had Kipenzi looking back towards the mountain herself!
The muscles in her limber limbs were meant for short distance running, and even though she was in her prime, she was wearing down quick. However, if she kept at this pace, if she could just maintain....

She breathed deep and picked up speed a little bit more. Her ears flicked this way and that, and her eyes looked to the side. Lilija didn't know what place she as in, but this was definitely helping her sort out a few problems and feeling she'd been having. The dark blue lioness definitely felt a lot better.

Aristaeus was far from giving up, however. A gap opened up between some of the lions and the seer kicked hard for a great burst of speed and leapt over a boulder in his path. They couldn't count him out! He grimaced as he panted hard, working hard to earn every inch that brought him closer to the finish line. If only his seer powers could somehow make him faster or everyone else slower... but so far they had never manifested themselves... Total: 1+2+3+5 = 11

Song was beginning to build up speed again when he came to a narrow portion of the course. Having fallen back into the general pack and lost his lead, he knew he would not be able to attempt that portion alongside any of the other competitors. There simply was not room, and to attempt it would be to endanger somebody a great deal. Song was not so irresponsible. He was pretty irresponsible, but not that irresponsible.
So he hung back before plunging forward through the narrow portion, which turned out to be a mistake on his part. As others had gone down the trail they had displaced stones and earth so that the footing was not as stable as it ought to be. Trying to take the course at anything resembling speed was not the wisest thing he could have done, for he lost his footing near the end of the section and fell, landing with a pain in his everywhere that took a moment to subside into its actual locale, his left shoulder.
"Hsst!" he exclaimed in frustration and pain.
Total Score: 10 (first -2 roll)Quote: While traversing a narrow portion of the course, Songvari loses his footing and falls, suffering a moderate injury of your choosing. He takes a -2 to his next two rolls (but no backtracking/negative totals, so if he were to roll a 1 it would just turn to 0), then a -1 to his rolls for the remainder of the race.

Whether it was luck or skill, Daisha didn't know, but she found herself pulling quickly out of almost last place into a good position in the pack. She still wasn't close to the front, but her heart warmed at the thought that she wouldn't be finishing last... unless she tripped and broke something, of course.
She could feel the beginning of strain in her muscles from the combination of trying to remain in control while trying to pull ahead. But she knew her body well and felt she still had energy to keep going for some time yet. She listened to her own breathing, coming harder than usual but not too hard, and the sounds of her steps as they mingled with the sounds from the others. Occasionally she heard a rock shift, or some gravel skitter down the slope, but she tried to ignore them. If she started to dwell on the sounds of the mountain, she'd make herself nervous.

At least Song's fall had not knocked him completely off the mountain. It had merely knocked him onto a lower escarpment than the one laid out as part of the race course. And injured his shoulder. Not to forget that part. But he was relatively certain he could return to the course with a bit of effort. Undoubtedly it would cost him sorely as far as his position in the race, but he had no plans to spend the rest of his life on this lower escarpment, so he may as well try to press onward.
He made his way carefully along the wall, ascending until he could hop back onto the designated path a bit ahead of where he had lost his footing originally. He didn't see any other competitors nearby at the moment, nor spectators, but he still wondered if this would disqualify him from the race, as it was sort of like taking a shortcut. It had not been his intention to do so, and certainly he wasn't making any sort of impressive progress, but he had not been forced to backtrack at least. That was something.
He frowned with determination and grit his teeth against the shooting pain in his left shoulder before continuing down the path at the fastest lope he could manage in his present condition.

Aristaeus furrowed his brows with determination and spotted a path of least resistance on the descent. He deftly navigated through boulders to a knobby hill and leapt from the knoll. He catapulted to the lead, just as incredulous about it as the rest of the racers and watchers must have been. He raised his head high with a proud smile, and threw a quick glance over his shoulder. All the lions were behind him! Maybe he would be able to make Fleance proud after all. Hopefully his pride wouldn't get the best of him, and maybe he could keep the lead. Total: 1+2+3+5+6 = 17

Breath in, breath out. Lilija was focused on her foot work. Her muscles starting to ache. She hadn't ran this hard in a very long time, since she was a cub, practically. Even hunting she didn't have to run this hard for this long. But that was because hunting you stalked your pray for hours and then a quick take down (most of the time). Pinkish purple eyes narrowed slowly as she mentally honed in on her target.

She was lagging behind, this she knew. Already many of the lions had managed to navigate the mountain’s pass without so much as getting a scratch on them. She shook her head at the thought. She really wasn’t a racer, she was finding out. Or perhaps, the new terrain (and maybe the cut on her paw pad) were to blame?
No matter, Noka had decided she was going to race. And regardless of the place she was in, she was determined to finish it. The pale green lioness puffed, strategically placing her footing so not to stumble, or injure herself. She kept an eye on the lions ahead of her as she ran towards them.

He didn't understand how things were beginning to end up this way. Was he being too cautious? Too timid? He should make himself be bold! But every time he tried to pick up speed he could feel loose rocks beneath his paws and it was unnerving!
More and more of the lions and lionesses were passing him. His ears flicked back, he was determined to try and win back some of this race!

She was beginning to get winded, she could see the other lions behind her gaining speed and zooming past. She was no fool, she knew exactly what was happening, she'd hit her prime and she was slowing down now. But the weird thing about it was, she wasn't even upset! She was just the opposite, she was happy, proud, delighted!
She'd done what she'd come here to do, and so long as she finished the race with her head held high - this would be no loss for her!
Smiling happily, Kaimana continued on with the race at her current pace. She wouldn't push herself to go faster. No more straining, no more stress. She would do this as it was meant to happen, and she would be happy with the outcome regardless.

Just as quickly as he had gained the lead, he lost it. Aristaeus roared and slowed down, momentarily thrown off his pace by the lions who raced ahead of him. The seer dug his claws in to the dirt, kicking it up behind him and desperately trying to stay in the race. Another fleeting glance over his shoulder told him others were well behind the rest of the runners. Well, at least he wouldn't be last. Total: 1+2+3+5+6+2 = 19

(Roll for Upendo - I'm sorry about not posting for a while, the weekend was so hectic that Sunday night I literally had 15 minutes after getting home to jump online, poke around a bit, and go to bed gonk *edit* Good GRIEF, Upendo, you stink at this xd )
Somewhere along the line, Upendo had gotten waylaid. She was far behind everybody else, and trying to keep up. The blue-marked black lioness jumped and slid and ran, but it seemed... She wasn't catching up. She tumbled a bit, coming to a sudden stop in her running, and looked forlornly down at everybody else, far below her already. Her ears folded back, and for a moment she began to feel bad for herself. But she was determined, and not going to give up easily. Even if she was going slow, she would at least FINISH, beginning to pick her way down the mountain again.
