Reno watched as Mikael caught the clay pigeon with his stomach, letting out a small sigh as the hollow object crashed into the hybrid and shattered with the impact. Quietly walking over to where the little kid was currently laid out, Reno stared down for a moment before finally speaking. "Still think that this can't teach you anything? Now, get up. Next time the clay pigeon comes flyin', ya need ta think a what ta do. Do ya smash it with that bludgeon ya call a tail or dodge around it? First few days a this, I'm gonna call the shot for ya. Afterwards, all I'm gonna do is tap my foot and you have ta be alert enough ta see it coming." Stepping back from the Dunsparce hybrid, Reno would give a small wave with his right hand to emphasis the get up and keep going point.

Mikael groaned as got up again more sore than he'd ever been in his life. It might have been hollow but it was still clay and that stuff hurt if you got hit by it. Hardened clay was still stone, after all.

Returning to the beginning of the course, he began to run it once more. This time, when the pigeon came at him, he jumped and flapped his wings, managing to stay airborne just long enough to avoid getting hit in the stomach again before he landed. His tail was still not exactly in an ideal position but he did seem to be paying more attention to where it was, at least.

This method of training would continue on for the next few days, with Reno randomly switching where and when the clay pigeon, and eventually pigeons, were fired from. Once Reno was satisfied that Mikael was able to evade and control all his appendages to an acceptable standard, Reno would set up a new training device: a simple wood plank across two cinder blocks. "Break it without any tools." He simply commanded, waiting to see how exactly Mikael might go about it.

Mikael would continue the training, getting slightly better each day until Reno changed the method. Each night, his sleep remained roughly the same. Little to none until dawn, where he would sleep for about an hour or so but not much more.

When the board breaking came around, he looked at Reno funny for a moment before, without breaking eye contact, he stabbed the tip of his tail into it and simply spun his drill, splitting the board with the sudden, violent application of kinetic energy. "Done." He said plainly. This was no defiance in his eyes. His tail was not a tool and he was never told he had to hit it. Just break it.

"Smart boy!" Reno shouted as Mikael simply pierced the board with his tail and spun. "And here I thought it would take a few tries before you got the wording. I don't need ya ta do it in one blow, I need ya ta do it however you can. Now then, let's kick it up a bit." Walking over to the now shattered board, Reno simply tipped one of the cinderblocks over before pointing at it. "The next thing ta break. Figure it out. After this, you get ta learn my lil trick."

This would take some thought. Mikael had only thought to split the board the way he had because his father had taught him the trick to split firewood last winter. He could tell it should be easy enough to split the cinderblock if he applied similar tactics. He saw the stone was porous, if thick, which meant it was weak in places. Deciding the best way to figure it out was to try. Once again using his tail, he began to spin his drill before plunging it into the block between it's supporting structures. It didn't happen immediately but it eventually broke but not before a shower of sparks radiated from the point of impact.

Reno nodded in response to the boy's thinking skills. That one was to make sure that Mikael didn't automatically assume a new challenge required a radically different approach than the same one previously used. "There it is. Hard ta deny that tail is yer greatest asset. Gotta learn the strength ya can put behind it." Reno chortled, carefully removing a Pokeball from his satchel before opening it up for Mikael to see. "Now then, time ta learn a secret I used before I got the fun mental powers. Now, watch this." Staring down the Serperior now sitting across the junkyard, Reno visibly and slowly tapped his foot a few times with the occasional pause between his taps that was more deliberate than the slow speed of the demonstration. Nodding in response to the sounds, Snips would quickly fire a Razor Leaf at the detached hood of a car leaned against a car that embedded in the metal a few inches.

"Ya teach yer Pokemon ta listen fer the tapping of yer foot or some other small noise that ain't easy ta hear and you can communicate without having ta speak. Hell, shout a command and tap out a different pattern fer a whole different sorta trick. Now, your turn. Just practice with Snips here. I'm not tellin' ya which patterns ta use, that is yer own secret since a few taps ain't gonna be too distinguishable from one foot ta the next without somethin' tricky."

Mikael listened to Reno and nodded silently at first. However, when the conversation turned to teaching Pokemon tricks, he faltered. For several long minutes, the only sound would be the occasional gust of wind causing his wings to shift, ruffling the downy feathers along them almost soundlessly. "What point is there in teaching this to someone with no Pokemon?" He eventually asked.

"Because kid, unless I say otherwise, you officially own Snips there." Reno simply replied, throwing the empty Pokeball at Mikael before sitting down. "You want to catch your own, you can. But first, you train with Snips and make it so that you and him can operate seamlessly. Whether you use the taps or go ahead with calling out moves, that's your choice. I taught you the trick to make sure you monitor your own actions during battle. Because a few absent-minded taps in battle, and Snips might spring into something radically different. A gift and training, all in one."

"I don't even know what it can do, though." Mikael countered. He had no knowledge of what any Pokemon could actually do. Surrounded by bugs and Ghosts on all sides living in Ecruteak, he'd been too afraid of any of them to figure out what they might be capable of. Also not old enough yet to train with his father and learn moves of his own, he was afraid to try exploring the world on his own until now. Mind you, he was still terrified but had felt a strong enough push to escape from home and flee the things he feared at last.

"At least tell what kind of attacks it knows." He asked, knowing that without that knowledge, no amount of training would make a difference.

Rather than answer, Reno reached into his back pocket and pulled out an old metal square. Throwing the device at Mikael, Reno told him, "Its a SNAG. Connects to a personal database for the people I work for and provides us with information on Pokemon and such on a need-to-know basis. Since this model is old, it won't be getting any of the other information but it should still have that function. Use that and learn on your own what the taps produce. Makes for a fun learning experience."

Mikael caught the device thrown to him with an anxious sigh, flipping it over repeatedly and examining it. "Looks like a game system a kid in my class had confiscated last month." He commented as he finally figured out how to activate it and began browsing through it. He found the Pokedex function quick enough. Like Reno had said, hardly anything else even worked.

Looking through the entry for Serperior, he found a move and, his wings ruffling anxious as he did, he spoke softly. He had to associate something with the command, right? "Um.....use Vine Whip?" He asked cautiously. In spite of himself, his wings flexed, producing a soft, barely perceptible sound. Maybe the grass snake would pick up on it.
