Bonus power redemption
Bottom of this post
Meditative restoration - Shun can meditate to boost his body's natural healing so that it basically takes less time for him to fully recover from illness or injury. He must actively be meditating to benefit from this. Sleeping does not count.

Trouble Change
Old Trouble:
Quote:
At Any Cost
---
Shun may be on the "right" side of the law, but the same can't be said for family, which ultimately pushed him down his path. He tried hard to bust his own family. A little too hard. He's a Detective, but the way he carries himself is more along the lines of a vigilante. This isn't the case with petty issues; he actually really dislikes having to deal with those and would prefer if someone else were to handle it. He will put up with it begrudgingly until the meatier things come along. He will do what he feels it will take to get to the bottom of things, and will focus most of his energy in doing so. He has few friends as a result, being one to avoid making personal relationships. Shun is trying to play by the rules, having almost lost his badge once for it. He doesn't want to land himself in jail either, but some rules seem more of a hindrance than anything else. If something is going on without results for too long, he probably won't be able to resist. Or in the very least, it'll be harder and harder for him to not try and take matters into his own hands.

New Trouble:
Quote:
Duty is not enough
---
After the events of the ball, Shun has begun to feel incredibly inadequate. Talks with both the real and fetch versions of Jeremiah hammered one issue: he lacks purpose. He fights because he can't/will not stand idly by and watch, but he has no personal stake in the magical mess, apart from wanting his own survival. He doesn't know what his purpose is, or where he lies in all of this. And because of this, he feels he has little to no worth. Every failure he makes only adds to this feeling. This, coupled with his original trouble of wanting to take matters into his own hands no matter what, puts him in an odd place. He wants to do something about all of this, but he doesn't know how. He's now lost, training himself and continuing on because he isn't sure what else to do. Shun knows it isn't enough.

Reason for Change:
Reasons for change have been highlighted within the new trouble in a way. It's not so much of a complete change as it is that his trouble has evolved. There's remnants of his old one there, but bigger issues have come to the forefront, on top of it. He doesn't fully know the reasons for why he's doing what he's doing and the lack of purpose is generating a lot of self-doubt. Which may be making it harder for him to find his path... so he's kind of got a negative feedback loop going on now. It's not pretty.

I don't see a functional difference to these. Shun's initial trouble is one that is exacerbated by the current circumstances, but it doesn't seem to me that he's changed: rather, this is a temptation for him to return to his old ways:

Quote:
Shun is trying to play by the rules, having almost lost his badge once for it. He doesn't want to land himself in jail either, but some rules seem more of a hindrance than anything else. If something is going on without results for too long, he probably won't be able to resist. Or in the very least, it'll be harder and harder for him to not try and take matters into his own hands.

Particularly this part! He's been playing by the rules: why not go hard, go all the way, and chuck caution to the wind?

Trouble Change
Old Trouble:

Have you seen the new neighbor at Fox Way? His fingers are always covered in paint.

Have you seen his cat? Have you heard his voice? There's a rumor around the town: he'll work free of charge for a nice conversation and a good cup of coffee.

But he doesn't talk. About himself, I mean. He's good at that - the avoiding game. How are you? How's the weather? Where am I from? Somewhere unimportant. Where are you from? Heard it's nice, never been. And he's good at making people forget it, too. Forget that he's a person, really. See, he makes a good model. A two dimensional figure that you turn around and around and around for clues to the real deal only to get lost in his earnest interest in your own life. You forget to search and he keeps getting to hide. He'd be an a*****e but he's too nice. He'd be a fraud but everything else is genuine, just not anything relating to his past.

He came to Ashdown to hide. That's the theory at least. From what? Who knows. Everyone has secrets, but this one has aphonia. Not the medical condition. Not like that. He just can't speak, he just doesn't. And if you get too close, scratch any rim of what makes him human, he gets flustered and flounders out of your life for awhile until you corner him in a grocery store while he's buying a new pot for his plants because the cat broke the old one.

"That's not true," Thorne says if you bring up his sudden disappearances, his cripplingly apparent aphonia, "I'm not avoiding anything - anyone - any - I mean, you."

Liar. This is his trouble: he's afraid to be an actual person because that means talking about his problems, his haunts, everything that chased him into Ashdown in the first place and he just can't handle the concept of that. Someone said that he used to be military. Saw some s**t, did some s**t, lost some. Lost a lot. So hell, maybe he's got PTSD too. Boy needs help but boy won't talk, gets incapable of it. Want to to close that gap and start a fire? He buys cat food at 3AM at the 24 hour market, takes coffee at that new cafe down the street, and he'd love to get to know you at one of the local bars until you ask to get to know him.

New Trouble:

There's a monster living at Coalsmoke.

Oh, well that is what some of them say at least. A monster, a villain, something inhuman. The unreal made real. They say he has horns, has wings! A descendant of Cain. A mark of the demon. This is Gods country, you know, but the devils paying rent. They say he's gentle, charming, a little wild. He can pull you in and have you over for dinner, and you will never know about the creature living beneath his skin. That's what he's good at, you know? Trickery. He no longer fears talking about himself, at least when it is about who he appears to be and not what he actually is. He no longer trembles at the thought of saying where he is from, drinking to bad fathers and broken pasts.

But ask him about those three months in hell and what they spat back out?

Darling, it's like pulling teeth.

Some might think he's afraid, but is there anything a monster fears? Oh, yeah, definitely. Himself, for one.

They say he's out of the cycle, after all. No longer mortal. The angels shunned him out of heaven, his religion won't ever welcome him back, and he can love and love and love all he wants, but that still doesn't change what he is at his core now. That cute artist with his cute cat and his baked goods and kind smile bled out on the floor of some Court for some Sorrowful deer. Now this thing came crawling out of the grave, and it puts on a brave face and laughs to all the right jokes. But god is he scared. Of what he is, of what he can do.

That doesn't stop him though. Not from acting. Because inaction is still action, or some philosophy like that. Only now he doesn't trust the world. Now he doesn't trust the people who were supposed to be on his side. A guide, they called him, but the devil could guide just as well as God, and the Spinel Lady raised him in her likeness, and he worries every day and every night in every dream and every whisper that she has bled her essence into him. That he is a villain just like her. That he is leading people down darker paths, condemning himself for someone else's gain. But he condemned himself long ago. His trouble is this: he feels as though he has been written to be a monster, a villain, and that scripture burns through him like a curse, but he still desperately wants to be good. But he cannot help the doubts in his head, towards himself, towards everyone around him, every smile feeling a little too close and a little too much like a lie. That no matter their words, their promises, their whispers, they can still see through him to that creature in his core, the devils mark beneath his skin. And so sometimes he acts it, and sometimes he pretends, but most nights he is caught in the middle, struggling between the two halves of himself, and the way he handles those around him. Those he trusts - trusted - and those he doesn't. Not anymore.

"Why do you do it?" Someone asks. "Why don't you just pretend?"

And he laughs and laughs, but there is a fracture line running the length of his eyes, the slope of his jaw.

"We are all somebodies monster," he says.

Still he loves, and still he tries to do right by the people that he has sacrificed his loyalty to, in the only way he knows how. He continues to fight, but on what side of the war? Good, bad, black, white? No, it is his own, his own, his own. The guilt terrorizes him, makes him weak. Makes him want what no monsters should have. And every night he wonders if it is the right choice, the best one. And every night he sleeps with the devil's hand pressed against his back.

Reason for Change: the events of the fairy ball meta and thorne's ascension to noble have changed his trouble significantly, as well as his continued growth of relationships and kinship in the ashdown community leading to a loss of muteness towards discussing his own past and ptsd.

ELK I LOVE YOUR PROSE but I'm having a really hard problem breaking the new trouble down to understand it. Could you simplify for me? q__q;;

Trouble Change
Old Trouble:
Christopher is a really, really hardworking kid. It's been recognized by his mentors, which is why they're allowing him to try for k-12 teaching certifications in science, and generally it works to his benefit for his image and his workload. Chris, in short, gets stuff done.

But he also tends to work a little too hard, now that his workload has upped since he's doing student teaching. There's always something to do and Chris seems to be determined to finish it all, which doesn't bode well for his health or his social circle. He's well aware he needs to slow down, but he can't seem to give himself a break and if Chris isn't careful, he's going to burn himself out or endanger his health greatly.
New Trouble:
Chris has gained friends and family to keep him on track and while he isn't necessarily keeping to sleep habits well (which is a problem in and of itself, as time goes on and Chris can't sleep rather than won't), he has people to keep him from a burnout.

The problem now is that as Chris gets deeper into Ashdown, he's starting to see how dangerous everything is. He needs to be better, he needs to work faster, he needs to keep everyone he holds close to him from getting hurt. The stakes are high and Chris can't bear to lose what he's lost.

So when something goes wrong, Chris assumes it's his fault and beats himself up for it.

It's counterproductive, unhelpful, and just drives Chris to bad habits but he can't seem to help himself and refuses to talk about it. It's got to be his fault because after all, there was always a way Chris could have helped. Could have stopped it. If he doesn't stop this, the guilt will eat him alive and Chris could very well hurt himself and everyone he's trying to protect in the process.
Reason for Change: The fairy ball meta has given Chris some really terrible issues, as well as gaining friends who actually care about his health, have made it that his old trouble is no longer really applicable and now it's more about him trying to basically deal with ptsd

Same thing as Blade, really! This is an evolution of your earlier concept. Chris's attention has been refocused, he's still burning the candle at both ends, he's developed a few coping mechanisms, but he's still on the same journey: trying to deal with his own headspace VS his goals VS what he can realistically physically accomplish.

ELK I LOVE YOUR PROSE but I'm having a really hard problem breaking the new trouble down to understand it. Could you simplify for me? q__q;;

its ok!! Q____Q IM SORRY ITS A STRUGGLE TO BREAK IT DOWN

simplified it's largely:
- Thorne isn't afraid to talk about his PTSD as in his first trouble anymore, but rather having difficulty discussing what happened to him in Court and who that made him into now
- He doesn't know how to act around people anymore, because he wants to be good but generally feels like being a noble has made him a monster/villain, and that effects how he handles his situations because he now has anxiety that that's what they see him as
- He is making decisions based on that belief that people see him as a monster and being more selfish about who he chooses to protect and trust, instead of being as open as he once was

basically his first trouble was because he was afraid to talk about his PTSD which was a large part of his character but hidden from view, and now it's fear of talking about his PTSD from court + being a noble and believing that people view him as a monster, which is affecting his actions in interactive settings with others

does that make more sense aaa? Q____Q

Melancholies
Trouble Change

Old Trouble:

Quote:
CALM DOWN HOLDEN CAULFIELD

Shiloh has some pretty serious internalized self loathing. He has zero sense of self preservation because of it, and while he isn't necessarily looking to drop off the face of the earth, he still doesn't do a whole lot to prevent mishap and injury. Most of this disposition is a result of his neglectful, if not downright abusive dad. It would be one thing if he could keep himself placated with the thought that hey, someday after high school he'll be able to move out, but the fact is he's still too stuck in the here-and-now of his poor situation to really believe things can change.

Distrusting of adults and authority (when have they ever done anything good for him, after all), he'll often act out when he's feeling trapped or uncomfortable. It's all part of his bid to look tough and steel himself from emotional harm. If that doesn't work, he retreats into his metaphorical shell and it's hard to get him to open up. He's come this far alone anyway, so does he really need anyone? His brother is one of the few people he's let in because of what they've been through, but even then he harbors a lot of jealousy beneath the surface at who he perceives is "the better child". He still loves his brother a lot, which just makes the envy another source of inner conflict. Shiloh just always feels like he's never going to be good enough, so why bother even trying in the first place? Everyone else has already given up on him.

Add to that his dyslexia, which embarrasses him and makes him feel even more inadequate (reading is so ******** simple, why can't he just do it). All of this culminates into his already inherent depression, which although he attempts to manage, easily gets overwhelming under the weight of everything else going on in his life.

New Trouble:

Quote:
GREW UP TOO FAST

Forget about his dad; it's the months living with Melany as a new role model that's really done him in. He's still got that aloof no-care attitude only now it's half parts crippling anxiety, and he has no idea how he's going to try and re-integrate into regular society. His new status as a noble is absolutely confusing and bizarre, because he just can't fathom why he would get any sort of 'reward' out of all that torture; as if he ******** chose this! It's a massive burden and he's sure he won't be able to live up to the expectations, but when has he ever?

Oh, yeah, what has he? About that; attempting to cope with the abuse left Shiloh with some pretty gnarly holes in his memory, and it unsettles him greatly. It's easier when he doesn't have to think about anything, and he tends to escape his stress by throwing himself into routines. Stability, stability, stability; this is what drives Shiloh now, this is what gives him comfort. He's extremely prone to aggression and aggravation when left to his own devices, and he absolutely hates change and the unpredictability that comes from it. It's absolutely exhausting how much inner turmoil he has to deal with on a daily basis, but it's the breaks; Melany got to him, and he feels like he deserves it.

Because yeah, those inadequacy issues? Still there. He's frustrated he can't get over his anxiety and he's frustrated that he can't do simple things anymore. His depression has consequently spiraled out of his control, but it's more of a somber acceptance at this point that he doesn't try to hide. He doesn't plan on getting better and he doesn't really care about putting in the effort either; what's the worst that could happen? He ends up alone? He dies? Hell, he's seen worse, and it sure as hell ain't death. There's only one thing that drives him anymore and it's getting stronger.

Reason for Change:

melany.

ok but seriously. The fallout of the faerie ball left Shiloh with a whole different slew of issues; his past trouble isn't necessarily moot, just that there have been more things built on top of it and he has different things influencing him now.

Old Trouble: a nowhere kind of girl
Temperance can never live in the same place for too long. It's not that she wants to extensively travel, really. She's just never found a space that feels like it's hers. Since moving out of her parent's house a scant two years ago, she's lived in three different places, and held down a handful of jobs. Right now, she's a phlebotomist, but who knows for how long?

This same transitionary tendency makes it hard for her to keep friends. She wanders and the friends don't physically come with, so she forgets. Forgets to give them new phone numbers, new addresses, everything... On the plus side, it hurts less to forget people than to be forgotten. As far as why she thinks she'll be forgotten... that's a whole bag of worms Temperance locks up tight. No one has bothered to even try to get to close enough, for long enough, for her to even think about loosening that knot, anyway. So why bother trying for some kind of domestic, root-putting-down dream?

Wherever she goes, there she is. It's not a comforting thought.

New Trouble: a no one kind of girl
Having people die on her is quite different than witnessing it in a hospital. Temperance feels a personal responsibility for those that pass through her hands and their injuries, their deaths, are her failures. While she excels in her nursing program, she works until she tires herself out, trying to find a way to better herself. If only she was quicker, had done something slightly different, had been better. She dreams of blood on her hands and, with how dangerous other Ashdown is, it's only going to get worse. Temperance feels a need to save anyone, everyone if possible, regardless of who. She's tried of deaths that she thinks could have been prevented. To this end, she's constantly searching for anything and anyway to become a better healer, someone more powerful, with more ability. It haunts her.

While she's gotten to know most people on a superficial level, this realization of the impermanence of everything has her still reluctant to draw closer. There are a few exceptions, of course; she holds a few people close, although she worries about how fragile their bodies could be. These thin connections to people only strengthen her resolve. She is nothing good for them unless she can help them if needed.

Whatever she does, she's only as good as she can be. But it's not enough.

Reason for Change: while the first trouble is still active, it has faded to the background although it does influence the new trouble, new trouble has been building since BlackFriar's and is of much more immediate concern/dictates Temperance's actions more. ahhhh I'm not really sure what to put in this section, sorry!

This is a pretty good evolution. The fact that her location has become less of an issue is fine, since people are really more permanent than places :3... So, approved.

Okay! Perhaps just an add-on then.

At Any Cost
---
Shun may be on the "right" side of the law, but the same can't be said for family, which ultimately pushed him down his path.

He has come to realize that he lacks purpose, and feels that he has no place in Ashdown as a whole. He fears becoming one of the Faceless, but he doesn't know what it is he needs to do to actually find his path.

Trouble Change

    Old Trouble:
Ever since the car accident that killed his father and crippled his sister twenty-five years ago, Rabbit has made it a mission to care for Olivia—his previously mentioned sister—even though he's always been kind of terrible at it. In truth, she takes care of him, or more accurately, they take care of each other, but it's only in the last few months that Rabbit has realized their care equation is not as one-sided as he thought. (That was probably thanks to Liv's surprise acquisition of her first boyfriend, but Rabbit doesn't want to talk about that.)

With what he has always considered his life's purpose pulled out from under him, Rabbit finds himself publicly in denial and privately at a loss as to what to do now. It hardly seems worth it to hold down his shitty receptionist job and make himself regularly presentable for only himself. While he continues his day to day life much as he always has for the moment, he unconsciously searches every situation and interaction for a cause he considers as worthwhile to champion, good or bad.

    New Trouble:
After spending three months removed from his average life, Rabbit returned to find that while nothing much had changed, his perspective had been turned on its ear.

Where he once saw Olivia as someone who needed his constant protection, he now realizes that his sister is a capable adult, her boyfriend a stand-up guy who is there for her when he is not. Her happiness remains one of his life's greatest purposes, but with the birth of his birds and his rise to nobility, his once frantic search for a cause has calmed to a dull mania. He has plenty of causes now.

Rabbit continues to chafe against the day to day, wondering what he is doing behind the desk at a salon when he has an undead servant waiting just behind the closest door. He longs to do something more grand and life-shaking with his knowledge and power, but remains unsure as to how to accomplish this, still more of a follower than a leader.

    Reason for Change:
The aftermath of the fairy ball and squeep manifestation have given him several new causes to champion and his frantic search has shifted to a frantic desire to move forward with the causes he took so long to find. He still feels compelled to help those he feels protective of, even when he screws it up or neglects his own needs to accomplish this.

Bonus Power Redemption
[blue check marks!]

the grass is always greener
Temperance can now sense points which can be used to cross over into other Ashdown. This manifests as as excess color saturation around doors/archways/etc.
