"We're gonna hafta figure something out, then. I don't know if it was Sub or GRAY that said it, but Hoverboards don't work on water." Abby pointed out, getting off the Pokemon Center's wall to begin following her brother to the gym.

"Not for long at least." GRAY spoke up from Abby's SNAG. "Consider it like running across thin ice. You can run over it but eventually your weight will break the surface and down you go. Same concept, essentially." The AI explained to the girl. "But if you don't believe me then please, go ahead and try it. I could use more error data. Plus it would make for a nice warning example in the Hoverboard manual, complete with your name and picture.

"Pass. I don't really need that kind of fame," Abby shrugged. "Thanks for the reminder, though." she added a moment later.

Lykas just stared at Abby for a moment as if questioning her memory for a moment before he simply pointed to himself without a word. Did she really not know or had she simply forgotten that he specialized in Water-types?
"Roxanne'll be a simple enough battle as long as she's not gone overboard on training to fight Shadow Pokemon." He finally vocalized as they drew nearer to the aforementioned woman's gym. She'd always been more of an academic than an active battler but that didn't mean she'd be any kind of pushover, even if she hadn't gone overboard.

"A gym leader's a gym leader. Take her seriously or you'll probably lose," Abby insisted, lecturing her brother a bit. "I mean, you've got my vote of confidence but no Gym Leader is ever a pushover, even if you have a type advantage against them. I've seen a lot of dudes thinking Whitney would be an easy fight because she's a girl only to get their behinds handed to them by her Miltank," she explained.

"There's no such thing as a pushover gym leader. I won't be underestimating her." Lykas assured as they crossed the remaining distance to the gym. "I just know Roxanne's style. She tends to be more straightforward than other Gym leaders." He pointed out. "Probably because of her status as the 'first gym leader' in the region. I guess she makes the hard battles a bit easier on newbie trainers?" It was about that time that they reached the gym and Lykas pushed the door open, waving for Abby to enter ahead of him. Once inside, he'd take a look around and try to be more patient with this gym than he'd been at Wallace's. "Huh... I wonder where I need to go to actually challenge her?" He asked more to himself than anyone in particular. He couldn't recall ever having actually challenged a gym leader before.

Lykas and Abby would find themselves in what looked like your typical school lobby, not much else but a few plants, an uncomfortable looking sofa, and a receptionist desk built in the wall with a room on the other side. The only thing that betrayed its school vibe were the two statues on either side of the entrance, typical of a gym but Rustboro's gym statues had Nosepass carved out of local stone perched on top of them.
Noticing the pair entering the receptionist, a late middle aged woman who looks like she has worked here way too long, would look at them with her glasses barely resting on the end of her nose and despite her facial expression of exasperation she would greet them happily. "Welcome to Rustboro Gym and Pokemon University. How can I help you?"

"Well, first, you could stop looking like a gargoyle and put some lotion on that sandpaper skin of yours." Lykas quipped as he approached the living relic working at the desk. "And second, I'm here to challenge Roxanne." He didn't seem to be even slightly remorseful of the rude comment he'd just made to the woman as he looked at her, finally, rather than simply looking in her direction. "Oh... Sorry... I assumed you were much older... From your voice, you kinda sound tired of this place..." Apparently, he was conscious of how rude it was when he realized he wasn't talking to the fossil he thought he was.

The woman just stared at Lykas for a little while longer, judging whether or not she wanted to get into this today. Alas she decided she did not and with a slight sigh slide a clipboard onto the counter and sat a pen down on top of it. "Sign in and state whether you're a challenger or guest. Gym is down the hall, fourth door down on the right, can't miss it. Roxanne will be with you as soon as she is available. The tear off coupon at the end of the sheet will entitle you to some snacks from the cafeteria while you wait." She said rather plainly.

The tear off coupon at the end of the sheet will entitle you to some snacks from the cafeteria while you wait." She said rather plainly. Lykas did actually blush, just slightly, when he went to fill out the paperwork. Yes, this woman sounded like she was probably as old as some of the minerals on display here but she hadn't been rude and certainly hadn't deserved that kind of off-handed insult he hadn't really planned on dishing out, anyway. "Um... thanks..." He wanted to apologize but it just wasn't in him. He wasn't the type to feel like they were needed often and he couldn't put the words together to say it. Sure he was an a** sometimes but even he could see just how uncalled for his comment had been now. So instead of making a witty comment and going on about his day, he froze for a moment as he finished writing down his information. "Sorry..." He stated once again before he turned and walked away. Maybe the change in his body language as he followed the path he was instructed to take would reflect that he genuinely meant it? ~I need to be more mindful of what comes out of my mouth...~ He thought to himself. Knowing that, someday, he'd be challenging Varuna, he wanted to ensure that he wouldn't be insulting the old man unduly, regardless of his potential crimes.

Abby didn't say anything at first. She did think Lykas's insult was deserved, though: the receptionist sounded like she'd rather be doing anything else than her job, which in and of itself was just ungrateful behavior. Like, how would she feel if Roxanne heard her talk to potential challengers like that? Or did the Gym Leader put up with it? It wasn't really Abby's place to ask these questions, so she kept her thoughts to herself as she signed on as a guest, giving the rude receptionist a gentle "Thank you," to show her that being polite wasn't as difficult or as energy-consuming as she made it out to be.
Nevertheless, in the end, if Lykas hadn't said what he had to the receptionist, Abby would have. The only difference being that Abby wouldn't feel remorse about it. Pokemon Gyms are serious business, and the cornerstone of civilization for most regions. Everyone involved should act like it.

Lykas and Abby would make it to the gym just fine, entering what looked like a typical high school gymnasium complete with uncomfortable metal bleachers on either side of the room. In the middle of the room was a simple white lined battlefield, nothing fancy and despite knowing it saw much use the hard wood floor was well polished and gleamed like new.
The bleachers would already contain a few students, talking among themselves creating a cacophony of indiscernible echoing chatter in the room. The doors behind the two Snagems wouldn't even have a chance before more students walked in behind them, eying Lykas with great curiosity. Despite how he might feel uncomfortable being watched he might take joy in spotting not one but two young hybrids in the bleachers, students of the academy; a 'bookish' looking Marshtomp hybrid spritzing himself with a water bottle while his Vigoroth friend next to him looked like he could barely contain his excitement, fit to burst. Looks like times were changing here in Hoenn.
Abby would be instructed by a teacher in attendance to take a seat in the bleachers, apparently having already been notified of who the challenger was. Wasn't exactly hard to spot Lykas out in a group after all. Lykas was of course instructed to take his place at one end of the field and that Roxanne would arrive once she is done with a lecture and apologized for the delay. If this was a delay one must wonder how quick things typical moved around here.

Lykas followed instructions but when he was told it would be even more of a wait for Roxanne, he flopping on his butt on his side of the battlefield and began to absentmindedly pick at and clean his fingernails, his ponytails twitching with annoyance. Any attempts to get his attention would be ignored until Roxanne had been made to wait until he felt good and ready to acknowledge her. It wouldn't be but about a minute but with the woman's busy schedule, he was sure she'd be annoyed by waiting for him when he finally "noticed" her and stood up. He wouldn't speak, however, as he reached toward his belt.

"Typical gym leader runaround. Make you wait a bit to test your patience," Abby sighed as she leaned back on the bleachers, having chosen a spot nearby to where her brother sat. "Well, at least she isn't making you fight her cronies. Assuming she has some."

When Roxanne finally showed up, walking through the double doors on the opposite side of the room, the once noisy room immediately fell silent. The school's students all stood up straight and their eyes were immediately fixed upon the gym leader and professor. Lykas was nothing but an afterthought to them now. As she took her place on the field she did not yet acknowledge Lykas nor the fact he was ignoring her, instead she took out a book and jotted down a few notes before handing off to a young aide who immediately scurried away upon taking the notebook. By the time she was done hopefully Lykas had stopped ignoring her.
"Welcome to Rustboro Gym and Pokemon Academy. Students, welcome our challenge, Lykas." She instructed the kids and teens in the bleachers who immediately welcomed Lykas by name in near perfect unison. Roxanne appeared to command complete respect and control over these kids. "I am Roxanne, professor, gym leader and head mistress of this facility. The rules of our gym is simple; since you lack any badges it will be a single battle with each of us using two Pokemon each. First one to knock out the other's team wins. Also, one more thing, the field." She said, turning to the same young aide as before and giving him a nod.
The young man would nod back before taking out a PokeNav of an unusual color, perhaps ones specially made for the academy. After pressing on the screen a few times railings would rise up out of the floor around the field. Once they were up the field would part at its center and open, the wooden floor receding into the sides as a different field rose up from the darkness below. After the mechanical magic was finished Lykas would now be facing a dry earthen field, the ground hard as stone, littered with numerous boulders, some very wide others vary tall. The guard railing stood up and from what he could see something twinkled in the corners of the room, the field responding for a brief moment as a 'cube' of energy encased the field. Apparently Devon Corp had equipped the gym with some sort of barrier technology to protect the students during matches. Smart.
"While me and my Pokemon may have the home field advantage I hope you will show me your wits and use it to your own advantage and teach my students a few things along the way. Now then, let us begin." Gym Leader Roxanne would then take out a plain Pokeball and toss it onto the field, the invisible cube of energy shimmering briefly as the device passed through it. As the ball hit the field and opened up a Geodude would appear. And despite how common and nonthreatening this Pokemon appeared the students gasped and oo'd and aww'd over it.
"Challenger has the first move." Roxanne proclaimed, her Geodude resting on the ground on its bottom, arms flexed, waiting for the battle to begin.
