Fanfiction type stuff has been around since at least the 19th century I believe. Fanbases have existed well before that. In the past fanbases were entered around gods/goddesses/heroes/villains type stuff from stories pertaining to the culture

I don't read or write fanfics nearly as much as I used to. I should probably write a new one, it would be so much better than all the old crap I used to write as a teen.
