Hoarding is when you buy a whole bunch of one item so that the cheapest price for the item is higher, and then sell it, right? Or is it when you buy things like EIs and monthlies when they're cheap, and wait until they become expensive?
I think it's just buying an item and holding on to it so the number available in the market is less, thus driving the price up. I think the end goal is to control the price, so selling eventually happens but I don't think that it happens very soon.

I've sometimes bought monthlies and a few other items in hopes they'll become expensive later, but I must have picked the wrong items, because I just looked over my inventory, and I don't think a single item I've been waiting to go up in price has gone past 30k, and most of them are staying around the same price.
Most monthlies will never go up very high. They used to, but now with evolving items, they're not generally worth much. There are some that are worth a lot, but you have to factor in desirability. If it's very desirable, it will be worth more later. This is somewhat subjective, but... Well, for example, that whip sword thing recently? Yeah, that's crap. I wouldn't invest in it. It's severely lacking. Not enough poses, not enough creativity in it. If it had more, then it would be worth it, but otherwise, it's not very good at all. If it's not something you want, it's probably not worth much. That's the general rule.

I saw the angelic item from the prom was more expensive than all the other items so I figured it must be rather popular, so I thought maybe I should buy some and save them until they go up in price. I only bought a couple and the day after prom they went up 20k... I should have bought more... :/
It was a good idea. I always recommend getting the tough to get items for events that don't last long. I have a sundae bunny thing from the easter event a while back, and I have enough items to make another if I choose. They're worth a lot of money still, and will only get more expensive later. Event items are like money printers.

n/m, the drapes were up to nearly 30k but now are 10k... I admit I can't do this market s**t very well. No wonder I'm poor on gaia.
Not sure what drapes you're referring to, but as I said monthly collectibles have been pushed to the wayside in favor of evolving items. Even cheap ones can make you more money than a monthly...providing you buy early then sell before it finishes. For some reason, the cheap ones crash in value fast often times. ...Not always, but often times.
