Why should he toughen up? It's not in his job description. he's supposed to be piloting things, so he doesn't have to toughen up.
Not to mention, he's too smart to be a jock. Simple as that. Name one nerd that benches over 250 lbs at your school in ten reps.

He's not in the army. He's in the Civil Air Corps, which isn't part of the military. Which does require intelligence, to nagivate the red tape.

I repeat, he didn't volunteer. He was drafted. It's not his fault if the government forces him to work with idiots. However, because he's drafted, and not a volunteer, he cannot be forced to become un-intelligent simply for the sake of a job he didn't ask for.
