First, find a good DM that has some experience under his belt. Do you like to go to conventions? Because there are gaming conventions, like one we have around here once a year is call Dunder-con and it’s mostly a table-top, rpg kind ‘a thing. Go check out a game-con and look around, join in on a game. Usually the best game’s fill up pretty fast, but it would be a good place to start. Other then that, are there any gaming stores near you? Sometimes there is a post-it board with people looking for players or GM’s. The game store near me has tables in the back open for GM’s and players to come in and game.

Players guide and some dice. There are usually supplement books out for the different classes and races. All depends on what you want kind of pc you want to play and what the Gm will allow you to play. You may just want to listen in on a few games, because each GM has a different style of running.

Better Idea.
Try breaking into the Star Wars Saga edition RPG first. That way you're somewhat familiar with whats going on. When you're familiar enough with the system, then move to D&D.

Cale makes a point. D&D can be really hard to start. You need to find a Class and race that you feel comfortable with. Then you need to get used to things in game. Spot checks, bluffs, listens when two people are talking and trying to hide it from you. etc/ A hard thing to do is always play your alignment. It's not easy when your true neutral or when your lawful good.
My comfort zone is usually a barbarian. Halforc, bugbear, minotaur, dwarf. Endless possibilities. Clerics ain't too bad either, but Bard is the s**t.

K: Cute kitties! Shadow reminds me a lot of my Coco. ^^
Samson reminds me of my old cat, Tigger. ( R.I.P. ;.; )
Missing: That good, huh? Sounds like the kind of cat I'd like to have a match or two with. 3nodding

I tried getting into DnD, but the DM I hooked up with rarely meets up anymore, and the one time we had a real session, we all got eaten by a Great Wyrm.

K-blade, in my proffesional opinion, you have three cats too many.
@Jaden: I dont think he;s gonna start with 3.5 edition D&D. Theres an equal chance he might be stuck with a 4th edition group.
I say Star Wars because the Saga Edition is a good one and its easyest to break into RP with a genre you know fairly well. Thats how I got into it. I started with the Star Wars D6 system and played that until I was confident enough to start playing D&D which is the mother of all RPGs.

Yeah, all modern RPGs seem to be a modification of the DnD D20 system... You learn how to play Star Wars Saga edition, you'll have a good chance of being able to do the same in DnD or D20 modern.
I just wish there was something real different, you don't by chance still have the D6 rulebook do you Cale?

I'm going to just assume that your opinion of modern RPGs is based on ignorance and suggest that, if you want something different, drive up to Omaha and find a Comic book shop or game store. They can set you up with some pretty exotic fare.
And yes. Yes I do still have my Star Wars D6 books. All of them.
