@ zz: /lets you resume your wikipedia reading/google searches/and amateur lobbyist studies.

I have no idea what you mean by this, but it certainly sounds offensive.

I really hope you did not just insult me for disagreeing with you, rather than provide an actual response. Because that would just make me sad.

Oh he's just accusing you of being an ill informed far right winger.

That was the best interpretation i could make of it, but i was hoping it was wrong. I mean, i would hope my use of factual information and logical reasoning would prevent people from resorting to ad hominem attacks...

Oh wait, it is probably that i use factual information and logical reasoning that makes them resort to ad hominem attacks.

*sighs*

People by and large may be idiots, but i would like to think the people around me are not. I would like to think people with whom i might talk on a regular basis are willing to listen to what i say, rather than blindly dismiss me. I would like to think that my consistent loyalty to evidence and reasonable discussion would grant me at least a little bit of respect, with which i could demonstrate my points.

In short, a random stranger insulting me is a little different than someone from this guild doing it.

It is like when a family member insulted me after i went outside in the rain. "What are you thinking? It's cold out there! You could catch a cold!"

"Colds have nothing to do with the temperature, that is just an old-wives tale"

"What are you talking about? You're an idiot!"

Respect is one thing, but that still doesn't mean people will listen to you. You have to keep in mind that for some people, they are so straight and narrow minded, so set in their ways, that anything, which might dislodge them from that vantage point, they perceive as a threat. Hell, with subjects like smoking in school, I was always told to shut up, because as I put it when we went to open discussion;
"You know the odds of you getting cancer, are about as likely as the truck carrying one cigarette which will give you cancer hitting you in the street."

But, even people in this guild aren't completely open minded, hell, look at me, we're anymore stubborn and set in my ways, I'd take root in them. Luckily for me, my ways happens to include the privaso of 'what if they're right? I should look into it.'

Meh.

Insulting someone as a way to hide is pathetic. That it happens so commonly is even more pathetic.

But you know what really bothers me? If he had said that to my face i would have smacked him. I am seriously starting to hate conversations where physical violence is not a possibility.

Aye, it does seem the net anonymity thing has brought about an age where if someone loses an argument, they try to get a last word in by being petty.

You could just do us all a favour and do the internet equivalent of a b***h slap... fry his MoBo.

Then why not take away a total ban and give venues the option to be a smoking or non-smoking venue?

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I'm not saying i'm for the irradication of smoking, I have plenty of friends and family that do it, but those friends and family have respect enough to point it somewhere other than my face, and not inundate me with it. I'm not saying smokers purposly get in my way or that you shouldn't be allowed to smoke. I 'd feel bad if you couldn't but don't expect me to be doing a jig if you get it back. It makes me sick... not becuase I think its horrible, because it just psychically makes me sick.

But with a ban, you have to consider other effects too, such as, my mother and sister, both work in a pub, that lost clientel due to the ban, resulting in down sizing, it puts peoples jobs at risk, especially in the hospitality business.

Well if every place is particpating in the ban, I don't see how anyone is losing business. It seems like everyone will lose business or no one will lose business. Like I said, I'm not going to jump up and down when smoking is banned, but i'm also not going to lobby for it back. Maybe i'll go to your mom and sister's place now because I won't be inundated with smoke their. There are just as many people who don't like it as people that do.
People who smoke get my sympathy, thats really all you can ask for a non-smoker. Most non-smokers will be laughing and showing no sympathy at all.

But thats the thing, the smoking ban has actually caused a lot of the smaller pubs to close down, luckily my mum and sister work for a large chain of pubs owned by a large brewery. But many other pubs, in the weeks since the ban, such as the Trapp, the Abbey, White Ace and other independently owned pubs in my local area have closed down, costing peopls their jobs and their livelihoods, the simple fact is, more people, especially with winter coming up, are going to stay at home to drink so they can have a smoke too.

The implication i took from it was effectively, "You are an idiot who is spouting off false information to support the corporations to which you have sold your soul."

In any event, i can only assume you did mean that comment to be an insult, seeing as you did not disagree with Rellik San and i saying it was. I find that quite disturbing, as if it is true, you were trolling and flaming...

Well he may call you a corporate lap dog, but I think its that attitude that proves he's smug lap dog of a government that gives the illusion of democracy.

Fact: There is more fat in a McDonalds Ceaser salad than a large donner kebab.

Holy hell, that's scary. It takes me two days to eat a large donner kebab. Maybe I should start eating at Maccy D's and saving a ton of money... one meal would keep me going for a week!

As a smoker sometimes I feel I don't get as much respect as non smokers and treated differently.
Even though even I can smoke inside I usually will insist on going outside if I'm say at a friend's house, relatives etc.

On the smoking ban: I don't mind it at all. I actually have proper conversations with new people outside and can hear what they say as there's no loud music.
With the exception of The Hotel California as they have bands on outside :]

Overall I think there are more important things in the world going on for people to be worrying about someones choice to smoke :]

Sounds to me like you're a very respectful, considerate smoker. (Actually in my experience most smokers are, and it's really a pain in the a** that one or two thoughtless people can ruin the reputation of a whole group).

As a non-smoker who's allergic to nicotene, I'm happy about the ban. I've always thought smoking was sort of gross and I'm glad it won't be going on in restaurants anymore. But then again, smoking is a personal choice and I'm not going to preach at the people who have decided to do it. As long as they don't smoke too close to me, I try not to judge them either way.

i don't think there should be a ban. it is a persons choice as to what they want to do. if you dont want to then dont. if someone is smoking next to you ask them to stop or move. you cant ban something because you don't like it. it would be like me banning people off message boards who whine too much. it's not going to happen.
