I was wondering why the word "bookworm" meant what it did. Does anybody know why the word "worm" was chosen?

It's because a bookworm is any type of insect that feeds off of the paper and binding of a book. I'm guessing we get the name because we read so much that it's like we 'devour' books. Go figure, book lovers get named after the creepy-crawlies that eat our books. Does that count as an oxymoron?? rolleyes

Oh, wow. XD That's what those bugs are called? I heard a classmate call them "page-bugs." XD;;

Maybe it's an oxymoron. xD Or perhaps just simple irony?

Those things are so creepy!!! They're like, invisable aren't they D :
or at least some type of them are!!!

My teacher forced us to watch a video on bugs in Bio... and after we learned about those, she goes 'oh, and once in college there was one in a text book that was MASSIVE and it shot across the table..."
We never thought of bugs the same way after that video D :

I don't think I've seen a bookworm, but I've seen bugs on my books before. XD Once, when I was reading, I turned the page and there was a fruit bug of some sort, like a small fruit fly. XD I flicked it off hehe.

Hm... XD How about... mrowkoob? It's "bookworm" backwards, so it's like saying you're the opposite of a bookworm.
