Good idea? I pulled that one out of my a**.
But seeing as how an electrical charge could set off a rimfire it's highly possible.

Power surge = BAD JuJu?

The .22s MIGHT hit the hard drive, so I wouldn't trust it. Thermite however, would, at the very least, destroy the entire room.

I still like the RFID chip and electromagnets idea.

Those magnets only SCRAMBLE the data, and it is indeed possible to recover data from the hard drives. Melting the platters in the drive is the best option. Even breaking them leaves READABLE chunks of platter which data can be read. Thermite would melt it, with would completely remove any data.

yeah, but it would completely remove everything in the room as well

Gas Can + Model Rocket Engine > Tannerite > .22s.

Just sayin'.

Thermite, when burn in a proper configuration (It's SIERRA, of course it's a proper configuration, most probably a plant pot with a hole in the bottom) makes a jet, not an explosion. It would destroy everything in a downward direction of the thermite, through the computer, through the floor, and AT LEAST most way through the foundation, if not all the way (depending on amount).

I just realised, Sierra has TANERITE, not thermite....

Our nuke plant uses glass hard drives for sensitive data. When they don't need the drive any more, Mr. Ball Peen Hammer comes out to play.

Grinder>hammer. Data CAN be recovered from chunks of platter. Grind them into dust, where there is no readable surface.

How does that work? I thought that hard drives stored data magnetically, and AFAIK you can't magnetize glass

Well, I was thinking about putting the .22s in a plate that's aimed straight at the hard drive or just above it.

Also, are you sure that magnets don't completely destroy a hard drive?
My instructor says that they do and I'm sure he said that they're unrecoverable.
Maybe he's lying or maybe I missed some of what he said.

No idea. All I saw was stacks and stacks of hard drives with single huge dents in them. That's what the guy who runs the server room told me; glass platters.

Nope, it only scrambles it. Get a good enough computer, and it can be unscrambled. With the programs the government uses, they can even get files you thought you "deleted".

You need to melt or grind up a platter to make it completley unusable.

or put a Dell OEM sticker on it.

I know what has been deleted can be undeleted. That's actually what we're working on in class right now.

Best to combine a program that wipes the hard drive and upon completion or an unexpected shut down, an explosive or incendiary device.

Which is why they sell/give programs that delete the hard drive and then zero it out, where it covers ALL the old data, even after formatting, with zeros, where the hard drive can NEVER be used again. It can not be formatted again, it is useless.
